Joan Mellen, Author and Professor, Temple University

JOAN MELLEN is a professor of English and creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. She is the author of twenty-two books, ranging from film criticism to fiction, sports, true crime, Latin American studies and biography. Her early work was about the cinema. Her “Women and Their Sexuality in the New Film” published in 1974, was a landmark work in feminist studies. Larry McMurtry pronounced it “brilliant” in his “Washington Post” review. Her study of the image of women in film was followed by the companion study, “Big Bad Wolves: Masculinity in the American Cinema.” Her book about “The Battle of Algiers,” written in 1972, has been quoted widely in connection with the events of 9/11.

In 1972, she was awarded a prize by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper organization in Japan. This led her to write five books about Japan, including “The Waves at Genji’s Door: Japan through Its Cinema,” 1976. Her 1981 novel, “Natural Tendencies,” is set in Japan. More recently, she has written two books about Japanese film for the British Film Institute, “Seven Samurai” (2002) and “In the Realm of the Senses” (2004).

She is also a biographer. Both “Kay Boyle: Author of Herself” (1994) and “Hellman and Hammett” (1996) were “New York Times” Notable Books of the year. “Hellman and Hammett” was also a finalist for the “Los Angeles Times” book prize.

She has written for a variety of publications such as the “New York Times,” the “Los Angeles Times,” and the “Philadelphia Inquirer, including the “Baltimore Sun” where she is a frequent contributor. She has also lectured widely at universities and festivals, including, twice at the Harbourfront International Festival of Authors and, most recently, during the summer of 2005 at the Shaw festival in Niagara-On-The-Lake.

In 2004, she was awarded one of Temple University’s coveted “Great Teacher” awards for outstanding achievement, in particular in the graduate program in creative writing.

Joan Mellen lives in Pennington, New Jersey.

About Joan's new book...

Faustian Bargains: Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace in the Robber Baron Culture of Texas

by Joan Mellen

Perhaps no president has a more ambiguous reputation than LBJ. A brilliant tactician, he maneuvered colleagues and turned bills into law better than anyone. But he was trailed by a legacy of underhanded dealings, from his “stolen” Senate election in 1948 to kickbacks he artfully concealed from deals engineered with Texas wheeler-dealer Billie Sol Estes and defense contractors like his longtime supporter Brown & Root. On the verge of investigation, Johnson was reprieved when he became president upon JFK's assassination. Among the remaining mysteries has been LBJ's relationship to Mac Wallace who, in 1951, shot a Texas man having an affair with LBJ's loose-cannon sister Josefa, also Wallace's lover. When arrested, Wallace cooly said "I work for Johnson…I need to get back to Washington." Charged with murder, he was overnight defended by LBJ's powerful lawyer John Cofer, and though convicted, amazingly received a suspended sentence. He then got high-security clearance from LBJ friend and defense contractor D.H. Byrd, which the Office of Naval Intelligence tried to revoke for 11 years without success.

Using crucial Life magazine and Naval Intelligence files and the unredacted FBI files on Mac Wallace, never before utilized by others, investigative writer Joan Mellen skillfully connects these two disparate Texas lives and lends stark credence to the dark side of Lyndon Johnson that has largely gone unsubstantiated.

My favorite saying is, 'Find Your Bliss!' That's what I've been doing as I write my Ocean Depths series. It's fun, like reading one of my favorite novels as it unfolds before me. I want to entertain my intended audience and take them out of their world into the fantasy fiction one I've created. My hope for humanity is that we can find our bliss and be good to one another and our planet along the way no matter what belief systems we adhere too or what governments we live under. Is that simplistic? Yes, but often times the simpler an idea is, the easier it is to implement.

I enjoy nature, the ocean, my family/friends and animal friends and discovering new ideas. Educating myself in different disciplines is a joy of mine. Take the time to learn and become, the rewards are incredible! As human beings, let's start out on our chosen journey, work hard at it, and along the way we will find our bliss!

Meet LeRoy

I am LeRoy Malouf, founder, developer and owner of Energetic Well Being™, the Energetic Well Being Process© (EWBP), and the Essentials, Proficiency, and Advanced Workshops, Home Study Programs, and Webinars.

I strive to help myself and clients make ongoing dramatic and positive differences in our lives and those of others, enabling us to keep discovering the path to our true Essence, Soul, Spirit, and Oneness with Source.

A key event that has guided my life’s work was a powerful spiritual experience in college.   I learned that I had reality and unreality reversed. I thought reality was inner pain, self-judgment, lack of confidence, fear of others, and struggle to move forward. I discovered that real life is joy, peace, love, power, perception, and being one with a tremendous flow of love, grace, and peace…and I decided I wanted to live this powerful reality every day!

I am an Applied Behavioral Scientist, certified in many consulting and training programs and processes. I have been a Multidisciplinary Consultant, Coach, and Instructor since 1961. I am a Certified Practitioner and former Instructor of Yuen Method© Full Spectrum Living, and have also studied under Agnes Sanford in Schools of Pastoral Care, Jeff Krock, Keith Varnum through his Vision Quests and Dream Workshops, and Matrix Energetics, just to name a few. I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an M.S. in Managerial Behavior, Managerial Economics and Controllership from MIT’s Alfred Sloan School of Management. My post-graduate work was at the Sloan School on Organization Modeling, Design, Development, and Change.

I have been married to my wife, Toni, for over 60 years, and we live on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on a small farm.  Toni is a shepherd and fiber farmer, and produces yarns for weavers and knitters.  She raises sheep, llamas, alpacas, and goats. I work with clients in person at my home office, on the phone, and on Skype (see the Services page for more information).

Guest Biography:

MARTIN KEMBER

While it is impossible to define all the elements of true artistry, one thing is certain; you know it when you hear it. Such is the case with Blue Eyed Soul Singer “Martin Kember”. He is a singer/songwriter/producer who delivers sensuous melodies and romantic radio friendly mid-tempos; it’s graceful crooning with a vibe! Martin’s distinct vocal style lends power and presence to every song he sings. This, combined with his stellar “story telling” writing skills, and production savvy creates a singularly compelling combination. Martin — a native of London, England who now makes his home in Los Angeles — has written songs for many other established artists such as Kenny Latimore, Australian Idol Winner Guy Sebastian, and he has produced tracks for Hip Hop legend 2Pac. (Thug n u, Thug n me, Let Em’ Have It.)

Martin started his singing career during high school as the front man of 90’s New Jack Swing era R&B group “AZ-1”, and later became the front man of the multi-platinum “Color Me Badd”. Martin also recorded his first solo album “One Shade of Love” on the Warner Bro’s Label. To his disappointment, a corporate shake up at the label left him without the A&R executive and team that had signed him. The album was later released in small numbers with no promotion or marketing plan. However, that same album gained a “cult” following organically around the world with those who loved melodic R&B. Soon after, soulful crooner Kenny Latimore covered the opening track, “WHO”, while “When Your Spirit Gets Weak” was recorded by boy band “Plus One”, which went on to become Martin’s first GOLD RECORD as a songwriter!

While negotiating the exit from his WB contract, Martin continued writing, producing and recording which he considers both a gift and a passion that he would never surrender.

In 2009, Martin had a top viral hit with the emotional single “DRIVING MYSELF INSANE” written by Martin with Emile Ghantos (Charlie Wilson)

and Andre Lindal who became known for his close work with STARGATE in Oslo, Norway.

This unforeseen success prompted the writing and recording Martin’s album entitled “Cycles”, which was initially released through a new regional record deal in JAPAN.

During 2013, the remastered version of the album–for the USA and the world via iTunes — was released and continues to be discovered and embraced by R&B lovers all over the globe.

By the end of 2013, Martin was offered the gig as the front man and lead singer for 90’s Icons “Color Me Badd” for a 2014 world tour, in which he gladly accepted. The year was highlighted by an epic performance on the 2014 BET AWARDS, where Martin performed the groups mega-hit “I Wanna Sex You Up” with rave reviews.

Martin has since handed the lead roll back over to Color Me Badd’s original members, who had been dealing with a variety of well documented health and legal issues.

A highly anticipated new solo album “Consummate” is scheduled for release this fall, and will include of the single “U DESERVE IT GIRL”, as well as a recently leaked viral all A-Capella remake/remix of the mega-hit “I Wanna Sex You Up” which features Snoop Dogg.

A Prince inspired ballad called “Sanctuary” will be included on the album. Martin, a self proclaimed “Prince fanatic” has also been very active in participating in performance tributes to his recently lost musical idol.

“Prince and his music was the reason I endeavored to become an artist. Since I was 12, I was enamored with his greatness, especially his falsetto and vocal range”. I truly feel like I lost a mentor, a brother, a family member, and I never met the man. He is so missed.”

Martin has performed Prince tributes recently with member of Prince’s Purple Rain era band “The Revolution” continues to perform nationally as a solo artist.

My name is Marina Jacobi.  From a little kid I had automatic writing and I knew things about people like sickness or problems. I had vivid dreams that were becoming true.  Through the writing I was connecting with different loved ones that passed away.  In the last five years everything changed.

I started to connect with different beings that told me that we’re from a higher dimension of frequency and hybrids including higher order of consciousness.  I also started to telepathically connect and hear everything. They started to teach me everything about consciousness and the new metaphysics that is the bridge between matter and consciousness.

They also guided me how to completely detox my body.  I am now officially on raw and vegan diet.  They told me that this material is very important for humanity and that this is just the beginning.

Guest Biography:

Bernhard Guenther grew up in Munich, Germany.  He moved to California in 1994 to study drums and percussion at the ‘Percussion Institute of Technology’ (PIT), Los Angeles. His exploration into rhythm and music became a journey of self-discovery and healing which led him to bodywork and the Healing Arts.

Being emotionally sensitive and battling depression throughout his early life, Bernhard faced his shadow and fears. His personal healing process inspired him to explore the mysteries and hidden knowledge surrounding our planet and humanity’s origins, questioning the roots of what constitutes “reality”, and how social (and spiritual) conditioning impacts upon our collective and individual search for truth, fulfillment and happiness in all aspects of life.

Over the course of his life Bernhard has studied various healing modalities and graduated from the ‘Institute of Psycho-Structural Balancing’ (IPSB) in Los Angeles and the ‘Esalen Institute’ in Big Sur, essentially developing his own unique style of Integrative Bodywork as a licensed certified Massage Therapist (Certified Esalen® Massage and Deep Bodywork® Therapist).

His journey over the past 20 years has also led him to the study and practice of Yoga, Qi Gong, Dance, Psychology, Astrology, Mythology, Shamanism, as well as various spiritual and ancient esoteric teachings.

Bernhard feels that in order to make a shift in consciousness, we need to do the work to separate truth from lies, both within and without; and to bring the darkness to light whilst making the shadow conscious, so that we can truly heal, evolve, and grow, living up to our full soul potential and aligning with our individual purpose.

All of these values are pursued in order to achieve humanity’s collective emancipation, which involves every individual becoming fully-embodied sovereign Beings, playing our unique parts in this evolution of the heart-space, anchoring a higher frequency of love and compassion for self and others.

CLASSIC ROCK LEGENDS

'THE BABYS'

An Interview with Guitarist Wally Stocker

Wally Stocker, born in England, is perhaps best known as the lead guitarist with The Babys. Wally’s distinct style, reminiscent of Paul Kossoff (Free), gave The Babys a distinct, recognizable sound. That sound has found its way back home with the reforming of The Babys!

When The Babys disbanded in 1981 Wally toured with Rod Stewart and Air Supply, as well as Humble Pie – Featuring Jerry Shirley, Jimmy Barnes and Zoomer.

Wally recently made the cross-country move from Florida back to California! We welcome him back with open arms and huge smiles.

With Les Paul in hand – and trusty Marshall stack at his back, Wally is back where he belongs!

The Babys are a rock group best known for their songs “Isn’t It Time” and “Every Time I Think of You“. Both songs reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late 1970s. The 1976–1978 Babys line-up consisted of keyboardist/guitarist Michael Corby, vocalist/bassist John Waite, drummer Tony Brock and guitarist Wally Stocker.

After Corby left the band in August 1978, a replacement was sought and the company brought in two musicians: Jonathan Cain as keyboardist and Ricky Phillips to take over as bassist. From 1979 until the breakup in 1981, The Babys line-up consisted of vocalist Waite, drummer Brock, bassist Phillips, guitarist Stocker, and keyboardist Cain.

After the breakup, John Waite went on to produce a major solo hit, “Missing You“, and continues to be a solo artist today. Jonathan Cain left to join Journey. John Waite, Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips formed Bad English in the late 1980s. Ricky Phillips currently plays for Styx. Wally Stocker and Tony Brock (together and separately) worked with Rod Stewart and other mainstream artists including Elton John, Air Supply, Keith Urban and Humble Pie.

In late 2012, auditions were held to find suitable replacements for the departed members. Joining original Babys Tony Brock and Wally Stocker, are John Bisaha (Lead Vocals/Bass) and Joey Sykes (Guitars). The new lineup have played numerous shows over the past year to great crowds and reviews – while pushing forward with new music to be brought to The Babys FANS – who have been sorely neglected low these many years! The new album – I’ll Have Some of That – was released worldwide on June 24, 2014.

Joining The Babys onstage are “The Babettes’ – Holly Bisaha and Elisa Chadbourne, along with keyboardists Francesco Saglietti and Brian Johnson.

The Band is about to release a new video for “Not Ready to Say Goodbye” very soon!

The Babys bring a full sound and look that has not been seen on the ‘scene’ in MANY years!

Michelle Edhouse has always thought of herself as a normal middle class girl with an engineering/mathematical brain, but she always knew there was more available than what she saw those around her choosing.

You could say she was always seeking. Meditation, palmistry, Amway and Avatar where just some of the places she looked to find what else may be possible.

When she heard about Access Consciousness and read what she could find online there was such a lightness about it she rang a facilitator and said "I want to do this class". Since then her and her husband Glenn have done many of the Access Consciousness classes including the facilitator training.

"The changes have been subtle in some areas but profound in others. This ease I have with my children now is something I could never have imagined possible."

Michelle has used the tools and techniques in Access to open up possibilities in business and creativity by clearing out limitations and asking "what else is possible here?"

"When I did my first Access class my facilitator heard that I had done computers at Uni and said 'Oh you could build me a website then'. What about doing computers at Uni 12 years ago says I can build a website now? Ok lets put these tools to work."

Michelle and Glenn use the tools of Access Consciousness daily in all areas of life and in all their relationships (especially theirs and with their 2 children).

Guest Biography:

Richard Matthew Stallman is a software developer and software freedom activist. Born in 1953, he attended Harvard starting in 1970 and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in physics. From September 1974 to June 1975 he was a graduate student in physics at MIT.

He worked at the Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT from 1971 to 1984, learning operating system development by doing it, except for the year he was a graduate student. He wrote the first extensible Emacs text editor there in 1976, and developed the AI technique of dependency-directed backtracking, also known as truth maintenance.

In 1983 Stallman announced the project to develop the GNU operating system, a Unix-like operating system meant to be entirely free software, and has been the project's leader ever since. With that announcement he also launched the Free Software Movement.

Stallman began working on this project on January 5, 1984, resigning from MIT employment in order to do so. In October 1985 he started the Free Software Foundation, of which he is president as a full-time volunteer. Stallman developed a number of widely used software components of the GNU system: the GNU Compiler Collection, the GNU symbolic debugger (gdb), GNU Emacs, and various others.

The GNU/Linux system, which is a variant of GNU that also contains the kernel Linux developed by Linus Torvalds, are used in tens or hundreds of millions of computers, and are now preinstalled in computers available in retail stores. However, the distributors of these systems often disregard the ideas of freedom which make free software important, and even include nonfree software in those systems.

That is why, since the mid-1990s, Stallman has spent most of his time in political advocacy for free software, and spreading the ethical ideas of the movement, as well as campaigning against both software patents and dangerous extension of copyright laws.

Stallman pioneered the concept of copyleft, and is the main author of the GNU General Public License, the most widely used free software license, which implements copyleft.

Stallman gives speeches frequently about free software and related topics. Common speech titles include "The GNU Operating System and the Free Software movement", "The Dangers of Software Patents", and "Copyright and Community in the Age of the Computer Networks". A fourth common topic consists of explaining the changes in version 3 of the GNU General Public License, which was released in June 2007. Another topic is "A Free Digital Society", which treats several different threats to the freedom of computer users today.

In 1999, Stallman called for development of a free on-line encyclopedia through the means of inviting the public to contribute articles.

Stallman is officially a Visiting Scientist at MIT.

Free Software, Free Society is Stallman's book of essays. His semiautobiography, Free as in Freedom, provides further biographical information.

Guest Biography:

Meet Ron Finley, a man who will not sit still and watch a problem take root. Having grown up in the South Los Angeles food prison, Ron is familiar with the area’s lack of fresh produce. He knew what it’s like to drive 45 minutes just to get a fresh tomato.

In 2010, he set out to fix the problem. Outside his front door, that is. Ron planted vegetables in the curbside dirt strip next to his home. And quietly, carefully, tenderly started a revolution. I wanted a carrot without toxic ingredients I didn’t know how to spell, says Ron.

His was an exceptionally creative, cost-effective and simple solution; however, it was also an act of spirited rebellion that led to a run-in with the authorities.

The City of Los Angeles owns the “parkways” the neglected dirt areas next to roads where Ron was planting. He was cited for gardening without a permit. This slap on the wrist did little to dissuade his green thumb. So Ron fought back. Hard. He started a petition with fellow green activists, demanding the right to garden and grow food in his neighborhood and then, the city backed off.

This caught the eyes of creative leaders and media voices that lauded his courageous act of ebullient defiance. Ron has continued to share his story and vision with the world, giving a TED talk and planning many exciting ways to continue his involvement in mitigating Los Angeles food prisons.

His dreams have been reshaped into a thriving garden of pumpkins, peppers, sunflowers, kale and corn. But more than being a gangsta gardener, Ron is a community leader.

Determined to change South Los Angeles from food desert to food forest, he wants his actions to be educational, inspiring, and nutritious. He wants kids to grow up with the option of healthy food, instead of fried, fattening staples. He wants to sweep up and transform his street, his hood, the city of LA and communities everywhere.

Besides his community leadership helping people to understand and become involved with gardening leading to better nutrition, Ron owns his own clothing business called "Dropdead Collexion".  He has designed clothes for NBA players, Saks Fifth Avenue and Marcus Neiman among many others.  He has also been featured on a number of TV and radio shows, a speaker at events, as well as profiled in publications like Reader's Digest, Millenial Magazine, and Aquaponics.  Ron is also a recepient of the “Natural American Heroes Award” from Natural News.

ABOUT THE 'RON FINLEY PROJECT'...

Ron is realizing his vision for community gardening and rejuvenation. Let’s grow this seed of urban gangsta gardening into a school of nourishment and change. Help spread his dream of edible gardens, one city at a time.

It’s time for Americans to learn to transform food deserts to food forests. Help them learn to regenerate their lands into creative business models. Let’s make Ron’s philosophy mushroom across the country, and the world.

In part of this effort, Ron is planning to build an urban garden in South Central LA that will serve as an example of a well-balanced, fruit-and-veggie oasis  called “HQ”.

Inspired by the idea of turning unused space such as parkways and vacant lots into fruitful endeavors, this garden and gathering place will be a community hub, where people learn about nutrition and join together to plant, work and unwind.

HQ will create a myriad of jobs for local residents, and this plot of land will be a self-sufficient ecosystem of gardening, education, cooking, business learning and management. The community will get their hands dirty together, shovel together, work together and be healthy together.
