Journalist Alison Weir is the executive director of "If Americans Knew," a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing Americans with information on topics of importance that are misreported or under-reported in the American media. She is also on the board of directors
of the Council for the National Interest.

In February and March of 2001 Alison left her position as editor of MarinScope newspaper in Sausalito, California, to travel independently as a freelance reporter throughout Gaza  and the West Bank. Upon her return she founded If Americans Knew. She continues to research the issue intensively, her library on the issue now includes over 100 books, and she recently returned from three months traveling through the West Bank, Israel, and the Golan Heights.

In March of 2004, Weir was inducted into honorary membership of Phi Alpha Literary Society, founded in 1845 at Illinois College. The award cited her as a: "Courageous journalist-lecturer on behalf of human rights. The first woman to receive an honorary membership in Phi Alpha history."

Chris Murhpy is a Violinist, Composer and Band Leader

For 25 years, and with no sign of slowing, violinist Chris Murphy has made a living by writing, performing and recording original music. For Murphy, the path forward is charted by looking backward, to the troubadours and minstrels of ages past. Forget the exaggerated reports of the music industry’s demise. It’s only the record industry, a relative blip in the history of putting tones in sequence, that’s suffering. Music, and the opportunity to make a life’s work out of it, well, that’s not going anywhere. “In another era,” he says, “I would have played square dances, and loved it. I would have been a court musician in Versailles in the 17th Century, or a violinist in a circus orchestra.” For Chris Murphy, inspiration spans eras and aesthetics, but the fundamentals are the same.

Born into an Irish-Italian family near New York City, Murphy was surrounded by the disparate and eclectic sounds of his neighbors’ traditional music. “I heard and was influenced by everything – from Italian-mandolin music, to bluegrass and folk, to Latin music,” he says. Inevitably, he discovered rock ‘n’ roll, claiming still further influence from some of rock’s most adventurous and eclectic icons: Lou Reed and Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan and Richard Thompson. “My real hero,” he says, “was David Lindley. Hearing him play fiddle and lap steel with Jackson Browne — that kind of esoteric, enigmatic soloing over songs is originally what I loved.”

He learned about Turkish and Indian music at Simon’s Rock of Bard College and then studied composition at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music. A longtime instrumental dabbler, Murphy has mostly taught himself how to play percussion, guitar and mandolin, even some Eastern instruments, but he found his proper match at 22, when he picked up the violin. “It’s the one instrument you’ll find anywhere you go,” he says. “And it has a wonderful, charming kind of minstrel quality. I love all the myths surrounding it.”

Eventually, Murphy did as so many American adventure seekers had done before him: He sought his fortune in the West. Now based in Los Angeles, Murphy earns his living by teaching — guitar, mandolin and violin — working on music for films, and, mostly, by performing his work for audiences.

And that’s hardly at the exclusion of recording. To wit, Murphy has amassed a deep catalog of solo and collaborative albums and made cameo appearances on records by Har Mar Superstar and The Dandy Warhols, among others. Murphy’s recordings include the likes of Steve Hodges and Larry Taylor from Tom Waits’ band, Nels Cline (Wilco), Mike Watt (fIREHOSE), D.J. Bonebrake and John Doe (X, The Knitters), Herb Pedersen (The Desert Rose Band), Tim O’Brien, Joachim Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club), Joey Peters (Grant Lee Buffalo), Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Santana), Trevor Hutchinson (Waterboys, Lunasa) and Pat D’Arcy, L. Shankar (Peter Gabriel), Victoria Williams. In the last year alone, Murphy has written and recorded six new albums in a vast array of styles. Chris has also been featured on television programs such as ‘Til Death and The Ellen Degeneres Show; his diverse and chameleon-like talents make him a sought after composer and collaborator for film and television. Chris has also performed in over 40 US states, in England and in Ireland.

As he searches for new ways to communicate through music, fusing styles and techniques from across the globe — a unique fabric of world music, he calls it — Murphy finds his element on the stage, where spontaneity and improvisation reign. “To me, the music is liquid, and I’m looking to have some kind of experience.” he says. “I’ll twist and turn and hammer and mold and shape cut and paste the music to do that. Kate Curtis began specializing in alternative methods of pain relief in the early 90’s as an addition to her professional career as a nurse and midwife. CHRIS HEDGES spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than 50 countries and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, for which he was a foreign correspondent for 15 years.

Hedges was part of the team of reporters at The New York Times awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. He also received the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism in 2002. The Los Angeles Press Club honored Hedges' original columns in Truthdig by naming the author the Online Journalist of the Year in 2009, and granted him the Best Online Column award in 2010 for his Truthdig essay "One Day We'll All Be Terrorists."

Hedges is a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City and has taught at Columbia University, New York University and Princeton University. He currently teaches inmates at a correctional facility in New Jersey.

Hedges began his career reporting the war in El Salvador. Following six years in Latin America, he took time off to study Arabic and then went to Jerusalem and later Cairo. He spent seven years in the Middle East, most of them as the bureau chief there for The New York Times. He left the Middle East in 1995 for Sarajevo to cover the war in Bosnia and later reported the war in Kosovo. Afterward, he joined the Times' investigative team and was based in Paris to cover al-Qaida. He left the Times after being issued a formal reprimand for denouncing the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq.

He has written nine books, including "Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle" (2009), "I Don't Believe in Atheists" (2008) and the best-selling "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America" (2008). His book "War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning" (2003) was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction. His latest book is "Death of the Liberal Class" (2010)

Hedges holds a B.A. in English literature from Colgate University and a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, Calif. Hedges speaks Arabic, French and Spanish and knows ancient Greek and Latin. Brandon Skall and Jeff Hancock met while DJ’ing. Johann Urb, Actor and Model

Johann was born in Tallinn as the son of a musician Tarmo Urb. At the age of ten Johann moved to live in Finland with his mother and her new Finnish husband. Mostly they stayed in Tampere. When Johann turned 17, he moved to the United States where his father lived as he started his career in modeling in New York, which led him later on to pursuing a career in acting. He studied in the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

In 2001, Urb landed a small part in the film Zoolander. Later, he made an appearance in the short film Fear of Feathers and had a role in one episode of CSI: Miami. In 2004, Urb appeared in the short-running television series The Mountain. Following that, he guest starred in several television shows and made smaller film roles.

Urb would then get his first major film role in The Hottie and the Nottie in 2008. The next year, Urb made a short appearance in Roland Emmerich’s disaster epic 2012 as a heroic pilot and he played a journalist in the fantasy TV-series Eastwick. He also played the part of Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil: Retribution, which was released in 2012. Most recently he has been playing the part of US Park Ranger, Burt Moore, the boyfriend of Abby Sciuto in the series NCIS.

Johann discovered meditation at the age of 14 and has held a daily practice of various types of yoga/meditations ever since. He believes in the power of spiritual practice, physical health, community, kindness, sharing and giving. And of course, of always being in the process of learning.

Terry Preuss, NBCT, is a career educator who has been teaching children and adults from around the globe for over two decades. Presently a middle school teacher, she also conducts motivational, and writing workshops nationally. Terry is also a two time literary award winning author, recognized by The Miami Herald's Tropic Magazine for her personal narrative, A Helping Hand, about discovering her mother's aristocratic past in pre-Castro Cuba, and Florida International University's Josephine Friedman Award for Short Fiction for her story, Cat Soup.

Terri Jay is an Internationally acclaimed Medium, Intuitive, Pet Psychic, Horse Whisperer, Energy Healer and more. She is also renowned as a medical and veterinary intuitive. She regularly communicates with both people and pets on the Other Side, particularly when helping people deal with the loss of a loved  one. Terri also has the unique ability to communicate with people who have communication disorders such as autism, Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injuries, coma, etc. Her ability to help people to heal themselves from chronic and“terminal” diseases has helped thousands of people to lead normal lives.

Terri’s love of horses has always figured strongly in her vocations. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she remembers being drawn to horses at an early age. She began riding lessons and by age 16, she was showing horses on a Class A circuit as a junior rider and also taught riding locally. She went on to attend Ohio State University where she studied Animal Science. By the mid 1970s, Terri had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she started a free, horseback therapy program for disabled children. In 1985, she moved to Reno to become the first Executive Director of the Nevada Commission for the Preservation of Wild Horses, a position she held until 1990 when she decided once again to offer a horseback therapy program. It was during this time that she discovered her gift for intuitive communication with disabled children that soongrew to include horses, other animals and the deceased.

Terri has always been in front of the media spotlight for her therapeutic riding program, which received local and national coverage. She went on to appear on countless television news shows for her intuitive work, in national and international magazines and newspapers and on the TV series “Texas Justice” as an expert witness. She recently appeared on the “Steve Harvey Show.” She will be playing herself in a feature-length movie coming out later this year. Terri is presently working on publishing several books about her abilities and is also developing several television shows for the future.

Our speaker is Dinesh Kashikar, lovingly known as Kashiji or Kashi. He is a senior faculty member who has been with the Art of Living Foundation since 1995. Driven by his passion to serve and inspired by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Kashi has traveled the world teaching Art of Living courses to an estimated half a million people, specializing in Sri Sri Yoga & Vedic Wisdom programs. Kashiji is a certified Yoga Alliance teacher, holding their highest level of accreditation. He has also served as the coordinator for the Sri Veda Agama Samskrutha Mahapatahasala, an Art of Living heritage school and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Vedic Dharma Sansthan, spearheading the delivery of Art Of Living’s Vedic wisdom programs, Kashiji has a graduate degree in Chemical Engineering from IIT Mumbai and has many diverse interests including sports, music, theater and books.
