“Recognizing our spiritual and perceptual boundaries and comfort zones is a major factor in our quest for answers. In general we are unaware of what we don’t know and the distance widens even further when we are affixed behind a barrier of limiting beliefs. Reality is a great science that has no boundaries only those that we create for our comfort. There is no right or wrong way to grow but it can be of tremendous assistance in recognizing the limitations which hold us bound. ” Sonia Barrett

Guest Occupation: Professor, Political Activist, Author
Guest Biography:

Dr. Mark Naison is professor of African American studies and history at Fordham University. He is author of many books and articles including 'Communists in Harlem During the Depression', 'White Boy: A Memoir' and his newest book 'Badass Teachers Unite! Reflections on Education History and Youth Activism'. The founder of the Bronx African American History project, Naison has emerged in the last five years as a passionate defender of America's public school teachers and students, founding groups like Dump Duncan, the Teachers Talk Back Project, and most recently, the Badass Teachers Association.. He was a former political activist who was a member of CORE and SDS in the 1960s. He is a graduate of Columbia University and holds a Ph. D. in American History.

He has written over a hundred articles and published three books on urban history, African-American History, and the history of sports. Naison has also appeared on The O'Reilly Factor, Chappelle's Show, and The Discovery Channel's Greatest American Competition. He has also been an outspoken critic of Teach for America.

Naison is co-founder of the Badass Teachers Association, a group dedicated to fighting the Common Core Curriculum and corporate influences on American education. His newest book is 'Badass Teachers Unite! Reflections on Education History and Youth Activism'. In this incisive collection of essays, educator and activist Mark Naison draws on years of research on Bronx history and his own experience on the front lines of the education wars to unapologetically defend teachers and students from education “reform” policies that undermine their power and creativity.

Naison shows how dominant education policy systematically hurts the very children it claims to support and instead forces them to “race to the top.” He exposes the Duncans, Rhees, and Gateses for schemes that intensify racial and economic inequality. And he refocuses the conversation on teaching and organizing strategies that should be implemented in communities everywhere.

Review

“Mark Naison has woven a series of provocative essays into a powerful book. No traditional scholarly treatise, Badass Teachers Unite! is an education manifesto for the people’s school reform movement. With clarity, verve, and passion, Naison outlines the challenges we face in transforming public schools and he forges a guide to our actions. This book is must reading for anyone concerned about the plight of public schools in the USA today.”
—Henry Louis Taylor Jr., director, UB Center for Urban Studies, University at Buffalo

“Mark Naison is a badass—and it took one to write this rousing pronouncement to the militancy emerging among today’s schoolteachers. There was an era when educators were feared by the corporate establishment. As Time magazine wrote in 1963, ‘The U.S. teacher used to be afraid to smoke, chew, cuss or ask for a raise. Now he denounces crowded classrooms, upbraids lawmakers, and goes on strike almost as readily as a dockworker.’ Mark Naison’s Badass Teachers Unite! brings back the attitude we need to confront the corporate reform bullies and reclaim our schools.”
—Jesse Hagopian, history teacher, Garfield High School, Seattle, Washington, and associate editor for Rethinking Schools magazine

Guest Occupation: Associate Professor at Louisiana State University, Author, Education Activist
Guest Biography:

Dr. Lori Latrice Martin is Associate Professor of Sociology and African and African American Studies at Louisiana State University. Dr. Martin's newest book is 'Big Box Schools: Race, Education, and the Danger of the Wal-Martization of Public Schools in America (Race and Education in the Twenty-First Century'.

The American public school system is at a crossroad. One pathway is decorated with signs and institutions that will lead public education towards a destination of collective obligation, accountability, and responsibility that is student-centered, community-based, and driven by educators and parents working in the best interest of students, families, communities, and the broader society. The other pathway is littered with pamphlets, flyers, and electronic billboards falsely advertising the merits of school “choice.” The direction American public schools appear to have taken over the past few decades is increasingly dotted with charter schools operated by for-profit multinational corporations, and themed public schools. Increasingly, efforts to reform public education in America resemble the business model made popular by the founder of Wal-Mart, Sam Walton.

'Big Box Schools: Race, Education, and the Danger of the Wal-Martization of Public Schools in America' examines the dangers of the Wal-Martization of American public schools and highlights efforts to challenge policies and practices which place greater emphasis on profits than on pupils.

Reviews of her book:

"Dr. Lori Martin's brilliantly researched book, Big Box Schools: Race, Education, and the Danger of the Wal-Martization of Public Schools in America, is going to blow the cover off the 'close ranks' rationale for defending Obama Administration education policy among scholars in Black Studies, as well as all education scholars who have the courage to listen. It eloquently describes the severe price for replacing schools which were community institutions with 'pop-up schools' (Dr. Martin's brilliant term) run by fly-by-night staffs beholden to corporate interests rather than the students and families they claim to serve." (Mark Naison, Fordham University)

"Dr. Martin makes the troubled history of education policy in this country accessible to a variety of disciplines. She talks candidly about racism in education and the United States’ long-standing tradition of marginalizing students, teachers, and families of color. The case studies are a wakeup call to push back against those who profit from so-called ‘education reform.’ She is asking us to stand up and fight against those who purchase a seat in policy and practice decisions when they have no expertise to offer. After reading this book, I am prepared to stand up and fight." (Joshua S. Smith, Loyola University Maryland)

Guest Occupation: Musicians
Guest Biography:

It was a vintage swing night in Hollywood, and the freewheeling, speakeasy spirit of the roaring ‘20s was making the dancers crowd the floor. On the stand, torch songstress Val Peterson was at the mic, singing a tune that would have made the Great Gatsby proud. That’s when he walked in. Paul Frederick: composer, arranger, musician. In his hand, a weathered, black case. In the case, a clarinet.

“Who plays clarinet, anymore?” Peterson thought as she watched Frederick assemble his axe to sit in with the band. “Who sings like that, anymore?” Frederick thought to himself as he put a reed on his horn and listened to Peterson finish a chorus. They nodded at each other, and he started to play. With just a few notes coaxed from the licorice stick, Peterson had her answer.

In such moments bands are born. Call it lucky. Call it Big Lucky…

As fans of classic songwriters and performers – Porter, Berlin, Fitzgerald, Shaw – Peterson and Frederick bonded instantly that night in Hollywood, and Big Lucky was born. From there, they set out to evangelize the greatest music of the past, but with a hipster chic style that’s all their own.

Whether performing as a trio or tearing the roof off with a full, 18-piece orchestra, Big Lucky has been wowing audiences and critics from their native Los Angeles all the way to Paris and Budapest with their unique, retro-lounge swing and glamorous sound.

In 20xx they caught the well-tuned ear of NAME, a vintage and rare Gatsby-era jazz connoisseur who commissioned the band to create their album, “The Venture Capital Follies of 1929.” To summon the speakeasy flavor of the roaring ‘20s, Frederick drew upon his skills as a composer/arranger to create original arrangements for a full dance band while Peterson studied 100s of period recordings to capture just the right sass and flavor.

Critics praised the album’s attention to detail, its superlative sound quality, and the excellent musicianship. The album led to Big Lucky’s first appearance at the famed Biltmore hotel in downtown Los Angeles and guest spots on HBO’s hit shows, “Entourage” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Recently, the band inked a deal to create original songs with their patented, vintage ‘20s lounge flavor for international music library XYZ. They’re also hard at work recording their follow-up album. “Around the World with Big Lucky.” Blending the band’s love of 1950’s and ‘60’s movie themes, Peterson’s unique ability to sing in five languages, and the virtuoso accordion stylings of Nick Ariondo, the new album promises music fans a whirlwind tour of continental, folk, and gypsy sounds served up ala “martini chic.”

With the finest touring and studio musician in Los Angeles behind them, Peterson and Frederick’s Big Lucky brings the best in jazz, standards, swing, pop, and lounge to discriminating music fans the world over.

Guest Category: Physics & Metaphysics
Guest Occupation: Teacher of DREAMS
Guest Biography:

David Rivinus began studying dreams while working with children at a mental health clinic in the late 1960s. During that time, he attended seminars offered by Gestalt therapists who were also dream experts. This led to him developing his own simple, effective method of dream interpretation. While doing his research, he was struck by how “dreamlike” the unusual events of waking life can be. His understanding that one can analyze and interpret these waking life events, reaching the same kinds of profound, helpful insights that one gains from nighttime dreams, revolutionized his approach to dreams and their purpose in our lives. Since then, he has taught dream classes on three continents and in four languages, highlighting both nighttime and “waking” dreams. In 2012, he was a presenter at the annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. He participates in online dream-related blogs, teaches dream classes via Skype and conference calls, and regularly facilitates a local dream seminar in his home town of Portland, Oregon. He wrote the book "Always Dreaming--Gaining Insights from the Metaphors of our Sleeping and Waking Lives" to document his findings.

Guest Occupation: Psychic Artist, Channel, Angel Messenger
Guest Biography:

Shannon Guest began painting guardian angel portraits in 2000, after several requests were made of her to make this effort. Originally, the portraits were only available in oil media. About five years ago, Shannon began to offer the portraits in pastels, which allowed for them to be much more affordable. As everything is really just energy, the portraits may be done in person or remotely. Shannon begins her process by tapping into the soul of the person, saying a prayer, and then starts to sketch. Although she does “see” the image to some degree, her process is more like automatic writing or channelling, where the information comes through her hands. She will also hear some of the information. Several years ago, Shannon began to offer a choice of guardian angel portrait, soul portrait, or guide portrait, and recently has even had a request for a dragon portrait. If there is a specific request for another type of being that is with the person, Shannon will make every effort to comply. All three styles of portrait will include messages given through color, gesture and symbols for the person in the moment. However, the soul portrait is really representative of the soul signature of the person and will be all about the individual. Past lives may be brought in if they are important in this particular lifetime. In addition, Shannon receives an individualized channelled written message, which may be relevant in the moment or more of a broad view of the soul or lifetime.

Shannon has a great love of nature and the outdoors and is also an avid photographer, with a great affinity for seeing “spirit” in nature, in the form of symbols, faces, magical creatures, elemental beings, etc. within trees, rocks, water and literally all around us. Her belief is that these are messages and a form of communication that the natural world is attempting to give us. She has compiled a book of these photographs called “Messages from the Lorax,” which is available on her website and on Amazon. The book is in the process of being updated, with quite a number of new photographs being added and should be complete in its revision by the end of Summer 2015.

Guest Occupation: Education Advocate/Activist, Author, Parent, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
Guest Biography:

Victoria M. Young is a mother of two, a doctor of veterinary medicine, and a long-time advocate for public schools. She is a parent who spent 20 years of service in classrooms, on school committees, and in her community devoting a large part of her life to fighting for quality public education for ALL children. She has organized fundraisers and efforts to save our schools through policies and practices.

In her own voice . . . “As a long-time advocate and activist for better education for the children of my own impoverished community, my objective now is to help people understand the need for each of us to become a force in pushing for excellence and equality within the institution we call the public education system.

Regrettably, many people do not grasp the concept of equality in educational opportunity thus making it impossible to explain the “what” and “how” of real education “reform” in America. But that is what I continue to try and do.

Educating my community about education, establishing better communications of ideas and results, promoting science education, and assisting in developing a plan for my schools to improve was where I began. In the process, I learned first-hand about the pitfalls and failures that others before me had also experienced. To say there have been no mistakes would be to deny a chance to learn.

I became a writer not to write a book, but to help demystify the failures of education reform in hopes of preventing those same mistakes in the future.

I know of no other book that brings forth the forgotten piece of educational history that led to our first national law aimed at providing equal educational opportunity. Please read 'The Crucial Voice of the People, Past and Present: Education's Missing Ingredient, 2nd edition'.”

Her book 'The Crucial Voice of the People, Past and Present: Education's Missing Ingredient' is a call to action for America's citizens to stop being passive and take back our public education and schools.

'The Crucial Voice' explains the most commonly heard complaints from the public about their schools and puts them in the context of solutions. It is based on the premise that we have the answers to what ails public schools but we fail to understand how politics and policies have adversely affected classroom practices. Hear what voices from the past and present have to offer in the way of alternative solutions that have withstood the test of time and scrutiny of research.

Young presents important insights into what can be done to “fix” America’s public education system. Her research and observations are eye opening and provide all readers with a galvanizing focus on what needs to be done and how to get there. But most importantly, the book energizes parents with new ideas and tools to improve the schools in their own communities. ‘The Crucial Voice of the People, Past and Present’ is a call to the public education system to openly listen and to communities to make their voices heard.
