ANDREW LEONARD

Andrew Leonard. Clarinetist. Teaching Artist.

In the fifth grade I told my parents, “All I need in college is a decent place to be noisy and play clarinet.” Since then I’ve been searching for the notes, people, venues, and music that feel like home. After graduating Juilliard’s Pre-College Division and USC’s Thornton School of Music, I’ve performed on three continents and I’m now in LA to take in California’s diversity and possibility. I love chamber music, and I’m currently working with the Symbiosis Ensemble and Midnight Winds.

In an effort to gain further notoriety as a soloist and chamber musician, I’ve earned honors in the Torranace, Redlands, and Peninsula Music Festival concerto competitions, I was semi-finalist in the Midland-Odessa competition in Texas and I received a grant from the Santa Barbara Foundation. I’ve recorded for numerous soundtracks and performed with the International Bachakademie, New York String Seminar, Santa Monica Symphony, Intimate Opera Company, San Bernardino Symphony, and the Burbank Philharmonic among others.

I also express my passion for music through my teaching practice. I’ve written programs for the LA Phil, Harmony Project, the Music Center, USC Thornton School of Music, The Orchestras of Pasadena, and The DaCamera Society. I’m also a member of the applied music faculty at Mt. St. Mary’s College.

Our Very Special Guest Today Is

Singer/Songwriter/Multi-instrumentalist/Composer

JANET ROBBINS

Janet Robbins was born in Nashville, Tennessee into a musical family. At five she began playing piano, rocking her Dr. Seuss songbook, and soon began to tour the neighborhood with a friend performing their own songs and commercials. She gained critical acclaim for her role as a piece of Oscar Mayer bacon in a frying pan, which may have led to her becoming a vegetarian. Janet's childhood love of bugs (and consequent building of much needed bug hospitals) was a foreshadowing of her later love and nurturing of animals, particularly the multitude of rescued Siberian Huskies she lives with.

Janet eventually made her way to Los Angeles, playing and composing in bands. She then discovered a different compositional voice in the creation of atmospheric soundscapes that incorporate her vocal and instrumental talents as well as diverse cultural influences absorbed from her travels. This new musical direction led to her three CD series, Carrying the Bag of Hearts Interpreting the Birth of Stars, and was followed by the critically-acclaimed Song of the Gypsy Tree. She is also the featured vocalist on Chris Armstrong's second CD in the Spaceage Furniture Music series.

Her music is "visual," "cinematic," "like a rich and sultry warm chocolate bath, but with surprise flecks of garam masala and chunks of ginger to awaken the senses." Her compositions "intoxicate and enliven the heart and mind." Janet Robbins draws on her rich heritage to weave sonic and visual tales of "magic and mysticism." She is like a musical spirit guide. Follow her and she will lead you on an enriching and captivating journey: "excellent and fair."

Janet Robbins grew up in a Nashville household that included legendary dad, Marty Robbins. Robbins was an illustrious country & western music entertainer with numerous hits including several that reached the pop charts. One of Robbins most memorable tunes was “El Paso,” a #1 chart topper on both the country and pop charts. Marty Robbins was respected and emulated by legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Frankie Laine, Johnny Cash, The Grateful Dead and The Who. Marty Robbins was also a multi-instrumentalist performer.

She was told not to follow in her famous father’s footsteps by her dad. According to Janet, Marty Robbins kept his personal life private, not wanting to expose his family to all the glitz of show business. And she admits that she rarely got to see him perform. Janet stayed away from music for the first half of her life and was not a fan of country music. Instead at an early age embraced, The Doors hypnotic single, “Riders on the Storm.”

Janet would soon be captivated by artists such as Yes, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno. Janet was also influenced by classical greats Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Dmitry Kabalevsky. Robbins music is categorized somewhere between progressive/ambient/ and experimental. But she has an indefinite talent that could easily embellish any existing genre.

Janet Robbins latest release is entitled I Hear Crow -Solo Piano Improvisation & Composition.

Guest Occupation: Healer, Author, Humanitarian and original creator of Rick Simpson Hemp Oil, alternative cancer treatment
Guest Biography:

Rick Simpson is a retired power engineer who worked for 25 years in the medical system in Canada.  After suffering a severe head injury in 1997 he took all the medications that the doctors prescribed, but their side effects did nothing but harm.  So in desperation he turned to the use of cannabis extracts, which he produced himself and quickly found that he had discovered the greatest natural medicine on earth.  After learning the truth about the amazing healing abilities of these extracts, he then went to everyone in authority to have its use recognised once more,  but found that in reality those who control our lives, wanted to keep the truth hidden from public view.  Having no where else to turn, he then made this knowledge public and since that time countless individuals world wide have used his information to cure or control illnesses for which our current medical systems have no solution.

Rick Simpson was giving the oil away for free, since he was growing plants in his own backyard, while he was still in Canada, until 2009, when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police did the final raid at his home. Rick was always talking about THC oil, and not CBD oil. The oil that he was giving away for free had a very high percentage of THC and it also contained low levels of CBD and other cannabinoids.  Today these extracts are usually called RSO or Rick Simpson Oil and it was the previous leader of the hemp movement Jack Herer himself who coined this phrase. Since 2013 Rick no longer lives in Canada.

Rick Simpson put up the phoenixtears.ca website back in 2004 and he made the information people need to heal themselves free for all to use at no cost. Rick did not even try to patent the oil or the method he used to produce the oil, because he felt that this is knowledge everyone should have so they could learn how they can deal with their medical problems themselves, in a sensible harmless manner.

"I want people to know how to heal themselves." (Rick Simpson)
