Guest Biography:

I was born September 23, 1942 and raised in New Jersey and New York City. In the early ‘70s I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and have been based here ever since, except for three lovely years in Boulder, CO during the early nineties.

My interests have always been eclectic and broadly scattered throughout the arts, sciences and humanities. My original career trajectory was toward Industrial Design, but after meeting the Cinema Vérité pioneers Albert Maysles, D. A. Pennebaker and Richard Leacock in the early 1960s I became their apprentice and never looked back. Following a brief, five-semester run-in with higher education at Pratt, Harvard and the New School, I began a career in independent media production (film, video, radio, photography, music production and writing) that has now spanned six decades.

Films I’ve produced or photographed have earned over two dozen international awards, notably including my short 1961 documentary SUNDAY, which was widely acknowledged as the first social-protest film of the 1960s, is part of the permanent film collection at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and was recently restored by the UCLA Film and Television archive. As of the early 2020's it is still being shown at international film festivals.

Guest Biography:

Mike Berman writes and performs original songs rooted in the folk and California folk rock traditions.

Mike’s album Ghosts, arriving in April, 2025, contains eight original tracks addressing themes such as growing up amidst gun violence, lost relationships, the dangers of looking back, and the redemption and mercy that love and music can bring to your soul. Produced by Ed Tree and with performances by Mike and outstanding Los Angeles musicians, Ghosts is a sonically and thematically rich addition to Mike’s musical library. Performances in California and in the Northeast (including the Cape May Singer-Songwriter Festival) are coming in 2025.

Mike’s first album Where I’m From, released in January 2023, received excellent reviews and was featured on dozens of folk radio programs across the USA and beyond. He has performed concerts and showcases at venues across Southern California, such as The Coffee Gallery, The Lost Chord, Jeweled Universe, the A-Frame, Universal Bar & Grill, Mission Tile Music, The Harp Inn, Cabin Creek Crystals, Stardust Concerts, the Cambria Center for the Arts, and many other venues, both solo and with his three-piece combo TIMBR. Where I’m From was in the top thirty on the NACC charts in January 2023. Produced by Ed Tree, the album featured performances from top musicians including pedal steel legend Jay Dee Maness, 2-time Grammy nominee Guy Davis, and LA blues diva Teresa James. Dave Franklin of Dancing About Architecture wrote that “Where I’m From is a great album… the sound of a modern-day James Taylor… country cool for the modern age.” Legendary songwriter Steve Gillette commented that Mike’s songs “uphold the tradition and are evidence that the California sound is in good hands.” Songwriter Rob Waller, founder of “I See Hawks in LA”, says that “Mike’s songs carry a depth and humanity that stick with you.”

Mike is a veteran musician, having performed in the 80’s with the Hudson River Sloop Singers (associated with Pete Seeger) as well as in his duo The Rusty Lock String Band, including festival gigs at the New Jersey Folk Festival and the Raritan River Festival. Guest Biography:

In 2019, after a devastating spinal cord injury left Tom unable to walk, work, or drive, he found himself
facing a life of anger, sadness, and the loss of everything he once loved as a Hollywood actor and avid
outdoorsman. For three years, he battled severe depression, questioning his purpose and place in the
world.

At his darkest moment, just before calling the Suicide Prevention Hotline, he recalled three words that
had come to him during a meditation a year earlier: “Endurance Through Adversity.” Those words
became a lifeline, reminding him that while his circumstances had changed, his ability to persevere had
not.

With renewed determination, Tom began the difficult process of rebuilding his life. He sought out new
ways to stay creative, find purpose, and keep moving forward.

Never giving up, Tom transformed from someone who had withdrawn from the world into a person
committed to inspiring others. Today, he devotes his life to sharing positive messages with those who
need them most, especially the disabled and anyone seeking a path back to hope and happiness.
Born from what Tom learned on his journey of overcoming hardship, “Parable Philosophies for
Happiness” offers timeless lessons and practical insights to help readers navigate life’s challenges and
rediscover joy.

Through a collection of thoughtful and engaging parables designed to provide guidance, comfort, and
clarity, each chapter delves deep into the meaning of the parable, with an “Interpretation” section
explaining its core message. Next, the “Pause and Ponder” section invites readers to reflect on thought-
provoking questions, while “Living the Lesson” offers practical ideas on how to integrate the wisdom
into daily life. Finally, a “Universal Wisdom” section shows how the parable connects with teachings
from other religions, folklores, and global wisdom traditions.

Whether you’re facing challenges in relationships, career, or personal well-being, this book provides a
gentle nudge toward creating a more joyful and fulfilling life. Each story resonates with everyday
struggles and triumphs, offering a fresh perspective to help you rediscover happiness.

Tom’s journey to reclaim joy, and his passion for helping others do the same, shines through every
page. Whatever your journey, there’s a parable here for you.

Guest Biography:

Kalyn Free is the Democratic story. She’s a Choctaw woman who grew
up on a farm, feeding cows and hauling hay on the Choctaw Nation
Reservation in Oklahoma. As a young girl, she rode a bus almost an
hour to school in a town of 600. She worked the graveyard shift at a
convenience store to put herself through college, showing up to class
smelling like the donuts she had spent the night making, who lived in
a trailer with no running water after graduating law school and studying
for the bar exam.

Her experiences taught her about the challenges working Americans
face – and the importance of showing up for every community, no matter
how small.

She became the youngest attorney ever hired at the Department of Justice,
spending nearly 11 years prosecuting corporations for polluting our air, land,
and water. She took that job owing more than $100,000 in student debt.
In 1998, she became the first Native American and first woman elected
DA in rural Southeastern Oklahoma, and after being an attorney in
public service for 13 years, finally paid off her student loans.
Kalyn served as lead counsel for six years for the Ponca Tribe, without
a salary, for one of the poorest tribes in America, against a foreign corporation for
polluting the air and land of the Ponca People. This case was the largest class action
ever certified in an environmental case in Indian Country. Kalyn worked with PACE/
USW members and credits the Union’s efforts with bringing justice to the Ponca
people and successfully settling the case in excess of eight figures.
Hers is a Democratic story.

Hers is an American story. And this is why Kalyn has dedicated her life to fighting for the working class people of this country. And why she is running for DNC Vice Chair.

Guest Biography:

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gail grew up in the suburb of Parma. Her mother, an avid moviegoer, took her Friday nights to the local movie theater. That’s where she fell in love with stories of all kinds. Her dream was to be a movie star, a ballerina or a writer.

As luck would have it, she realized two of her three dreams. She was a member of the Cleveland Civic Ballet Company. And she’s the author of five mystery novels, a memoir, a book of poetry, and numerous poems, essays, and short stories.

After earning a PhD and MA in English with a specialization in writing poetry, Gail decided to write a mystery novel at the urging of her son. Destroying Angels, the first book in her Leigh Girard mystery series, was described by Kirkus Reviews as “a riveting debut thriller.” She went on to write two more books in the series, Death’s Door and Peak Season for Murder, which won a Lovey Award for Best Traditional Sleuth. The Lost Artist, her stand-alone mystery, reflected her love of the visual arts and 19th century history.

The Megyn Kelly Today ShowIn 2017 Gail’s memoir, White Like Her: My Family’s Story of Race and Racial Passing, captured national and international attention. The Washington Post named the book one of the most inspiring stories of the year. After she and her “lost” New Orleans family appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, her memoir reached the top 100 book on Amazon and led to her appearing in the short documentary film, History of Memory. The film won a Tribeca Film Award (Amazon Prime). Her section of the film, “The Secret Album,” tells her mother’s story of passing.

Her articles about coming to terms with her mixed-race identity were published in The Washington Post, Mic.com, Salon.com, Independent.co.uk, Upworthy, Mis. Magazine and The Daily Beast.

Wanting to return to her mystery roots, Gail wrote her fifth mystery, The Darkness Surrounds Us, a Gothic, historical mystery. Two historical events inspired the book—the 1918 Spanish flu and the rise of utopian communities in the 19th century.

Still an avid moviegoer, Gail lives in Libertyville, Illinois with her husband

Guest Biography:

Chef Charles Webb is not just a chef; he is an innovator, storyteller, and connector of people. Born in Chicago and raised in both San Antonio, Texas, and Irapuato, Mexico, Webb’s early life was marked by resilience and independence. With a childhood shaped by financial struggles and family challenges, Webb found his first lessons in the kitchen as a young boy. Encouraged by his mother to cook with real ingredients during her long hours at work, Webb’s passion for food and self-sufficiency was born.

However, Webb’s journey to becoming a celebrated chef was far from linear. After graduating from the European School of Economics in Rome, he began a career in finance on Wall Street. But a pivotal moment—witnessing 9/11 from a SoHo street corner—led him to reconsider his path. He left the corporate world to pursue his love for food, embarking on an extraordinary global journey.

From honing his craft at Michelin-starred Noma in Copenhagen and The Mercer Kitchen in New York to working at Casas Brancas Resort & Spa in Brazil and aboard mega-yachts on the Côte d’Azur, Webb absorbed culinary influences from every corner of the globe. Across 92 jobs in nine countries, he gained the skills, perspective, and entrepreneurial spirit that define him today.

Returning to Chicago, Webb founded Avanti Gourmet Catering, a business that reflects his belief in food as an experience rather than just a meal. Drawing on his multilingual abilities, international network, and deep appreciation for diverse cuisines, Webb creates unforgettable moments that transcend the plate.

Webb’s impact goes beyond the kitchen. He is a philanthropist, contributing to organizations such as the One Goal Foundation and Lurie Children’s Hospital. He is also the creator and host of #ChefOnTour, a digital series that merges culture, community, food, and art with travel. Visiting cities around the world, Webb collaborates with local influencers, chefs, and artists to craft intimate, purpose-driven dining experiences in extraordinary settings—from Buddhist temples to historic landmarks.

At the heart of Webb’s work is a commitment to connection and purpose. Whether raising funds to provide cooking appliances for underprivileged families in Medellín, Colombia, or sourcing innovative ingredients like Lion’s Mane mushrooms and cannabis, Webb’s vision is expansive. He believes food is a universal language—a way to foster dialogue, inspire action, and bring people together.

As a culinary leader and cultural pioneer, Webb continues to push boundaries, blending his passion for storytelling, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. He invites the world to join his journey of discovery, collaboration, and impact—because, as Webb believes, together, it all tastes better.
