Historical Novel By Controversial Author Explores Black Panther Party & Racial Relations Through The Lens Of 1960’s- 70’s Civil Rights Movement

Several generations before the Black Lives Matter movement took hold, there was a bigger, more controversial group fighting for civil rights and equality in America. A new book, When Black Panthers Prowled Amerika, offers a unique look at the Black Panthers Party through the eyes of an author who marched in the south in the 1960s under Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Though Pam’s book (that is how the author wants tobe known) is historical fiction, it features mostly real figures from a tumultuous era, and meditates on race relations that offer insights into today’s society. The book has stirred controversy because the author is not a young Black woman, but rather an older white guy. Pam is the last name of the author – not the first. “Because of accusations of cultural misappropriation, I wasn’t able to get published under my real name,” says Pam. “We live in the time of a hyper-sensitive cancel culture that many people wonder if it is racist and sexist in itself.”

Pam, a psychotherapist by trade, writes with a unique perspective on a subject matter that is both
historical and ever so timely for today’s world. The book is informative, analytical, and
enlightening – and sure to stir a debate both for its contents and its author.

Pam, who has been a psychotherapist for over half a century, is the author of three books, including the historical novel, When Black Panthers Prowled Amerika.

In 1964, Pam joined a thousand college students to participate in the “Mississippi Freedom Summer,” under the aegis of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Three civil-rights workers were lynched by the Klan right at the outset of the project. Following his life-changing experience down south, Pam returned north to lead a civil rights group in Buffalo.

Pam’s career as a clinical psychologist includes 34 years of service at Bronx Psychiatry Center, including a 10-year stint as the Director of Psychology Department. For the past 21 years, Pam has engaged in private practice.

As an adjunct assistant professor (psychology) at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Pam also taught at several colleges and graduate schools, including Fordham and Yeshiva Universities, the New School for social Research, and was an adjunct associate professor of psychology at Bronx Community College for 24 years.

A veteran of the United States Army, Pam has been an active member of the American Psychological Association, American Group Psychotherapy Association, and New York State Psychological Association.

Pam’s earlier two books addressed issues in  therapy and science; in addition, he has published numerous articles in professional journals such as Psychiatric Quarterly, American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychological Reports, Archives of General Psychiatry, New Ideas in Psychology, International Journal of Group Psychotherapy, American Journal of Psychotherapy, Journal of Mind and Behavior, and Professional Psychology, Research, and Practice.

Pam earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and Pam’s M.A. in Psychology came from New School for Social Research. He also earned another M.A., in Modern European History, from New York University, and a B.A. in History from Brooklyn College.

Pam, raised in Brooklyn, New York, now resides in Westchester, New York.

Taking on one city at a time, Robert Craig Films production team visited the homeless in 17 cities in America to understand their challenges and ultimately create an authentic documentary and feature film that will emotionally resonate with audiences.

The film, No Address, a scripted feature film that will begin production in February, will shed light on the human side of homelessness with beautiful and compelling storytelling. Robert Craig Films, a producer of award-winning purpose-driven movies, strives to effectively motivate viewers to engage deeper with compassion in the community around them and incite personal activation.

Taking a deep dive into raising awareness of the homeless crisis in America, the production team toured the following 17 cities by bus including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, New York, New Jersey, Portland, Chicago, Texas, and Washington DC, visiting rescue missions and encampments to create a documentary titled Americans With No Address, that vividly portrays America’s leading crisis and the millions of people that suffer.

The team also interviewed the executive director of homeless policy for the Biden administration, the Mayor of Sacramento, the homeless director for the Newsom administration, the CEO of Citygate, several Salvation Army Majors, and directors of missions and transitional programs across America. The feature film No Address will follow from the documentary Americans With No Address, filmed on the bus tour. Casting for No Address has just begun, and the film will shoot in Sacramento.

“Both the documentary Americans With No Address and the feature film No Address aren't just about getting people emotionally invested so they take action, but also bringing solutions to the table. It was incredibly important to bring world-renowned homeless expert Robert G. Marbut Jr., Ph.D. on board and his work to foster the creation of holistically transformative environments to reduce homelessness,” says Craig.

Julia Verdin, No Address writer and director and Americans With No Address co-director, says, "Making the documentary and getting a sense of the world of people experiencing homelessness and their challenges was critical in fine-tuning the script. Robert Marbut’s and Philip Mangano’s input and years of experience also helped improve the script and keep it authentic.”

Dr. Patricia (Patty) Mechael is an award-winning, internationally-recognized digital health specialist of three decades. Her work has been honored by the John Hopkins University Knowledge for the World Distinguished Alumnus Award, the British Council UK Education Social Impact Award, and the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Resident Fellowship.

On top of being a public health specialist, Patty is also a mom and author, who combines her passions for technology and innovation, science, women's rights, and the environment to inspire kids and adults through her writing. 

Drawing on her career in global health, Patty's works wrestle with the toughest public health and societal issues of our time, including the environment, pandemic preparedness, responsible technology and AI, and mental health. She is recognized as a pioneer in the use of mobile and other technologies for health.  She is the co-founder and policy lead at the South Africa-based non-profit, HealthEnabled, has served as executive director of the mHealth Alliance at the United Nations Foundation, and as executive vice president of the Personal Connected Health Alliance.  

In addition, she is co-editor of mHealth in Practice: Mobile technology for health promotion in the developing world, which is published by Bloomsbury, an editorial board member of the Journal of Medical Internet Research and Oxford Open Digital Health Journal, and a regular contributing author to AIMed's quarterly journal. 
She has developed new curricula in research methods and information technology for health and international development and taught at many leading schools, including Columbia University, Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Rutgers University, American University in Cairo and Beirut, and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. 

In addition to having several books published, including her debut novel, The Antidotes, Patty has penned more than 100 publications on various aspects of public health and technology in scientific and health journals. Her writing draws on her more than 30 years of work in 45 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America. She earned a PhD in Public Health and Policy from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Master's in Health Science in International Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.
