No need for phones or social media. Marko spent 20 years living in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he raised his kids, worked professionally in advertising and kept skating. Jeffrey S Stephens
Newest Nick Reagan Thriller Tackles Evil and Corruption Within US Borders GREENWICH, CT — Bestselling author Jeffrey Stephens delivers a nail-biting escape from reality — while exploring contemporary real-world problems — in his latest spy thriller, Enemies Among Us. “You’ve got to keep the action going,” Stephens said during an interview. “This is not some kind of deep psychological treatise; this is a thriller, and if people aren’t turning the pages, then I’m not doing my job.” Enemies Among Us is a sequel to Stephens’ first book in the series, The Handler, which an Authors.com reviewer called “a heart-pounding ride with great narratives … It’s got it all — spies, assassins, guns and terrorist cells … If you liked Vince Flynn novels, you would love Stephens’ super-cool CIA operative Nick Reagan.” Enemies Among Us takes all that to another level, as Reagan and his partner, Carol Gellos, attempt to track down the terrorist responsible for the planned attacks in The Handler. While the good guys are easily identified in that story, it is a bit more difficult to tell the heroes from the villains in Enemies Among Us. As Reagan assembles clues to the whereabouts of his prey, his superiors in the CIA inexplicably order him to stand down, and it becomes increasingly evident that the evil he faces could be corruption from within. Charting an unfamiliar course amidst the pervasive treachery and deadly secrets inside the nation’s capital, Reagan is not sure who he can trust as he works to expose the worst of America’s elite — those who believe in a New World Order. Violent confrontations intensify with each new act of treason he unearths, leaving Reagan to rely on his patriotic instincts as he and his team risk their lives to bring down these traitors and restore safety and freedom. “Many may have thought the continuing threat from terrorists was over,” Stephens said, “but as we have recently seen, it remains incredibly current and violent … while few would believe that corruption within our own intelligence services and the highest levels of corporate power are something we are dealing with in real time.” Jeffrey S. Stephens is a successful attorney in private practice, residing in Greenwich, CT. In additional to The Handler and Enemies Among Us, he is the author of the Jordan Sandor thrillers, Targets of Deception, Targets of Opportunity, Targets of Revenge and Rogue Mission, as well as the Anthony Walker murder mystery Crimes and Passion and the Pencraft first-place award-winning novel, Fool’s Errand. Jeffrey Stephens was born in New York City and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science at the age of 16; he completed a B.A. in Creative Writing from Pennsylvania State University at 19. Jeffrey began his first novel in 1970, which would not be completed for several years as he entered the Fordham University School of Law. His private legal practice has included extensive civil and criminal courtroom experience, and he has represented a wide range of celebrity clients. Continuing to practice law while completing several novels, he only recently decided to pursue his career as a novelist in earnest, with the encouragement of his wife, Nancy. Nancy and Jeffrey live in Greenwich, Connecticut, where they raised two sons, Graham and Trevor. All avid skiers, golfers and tennis players, they have traveled extensively as a family throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, including a fateful trip years ago to Portofino, Italy, the setting for the climax of TARGETS OF DECEPTION.

Richard Perkins Hsung
Big idea: Jean Tren-Hwa Perkins was born unwanted during the 1931 Yangtze River Flood, adopted by medical missionaries, brought to the US for a few years, then trapped in Communist China. She was neither American nor Chinese "enough," yearning for acceptance and home her whole life. Her memoir, finished by her son, is an eyewitness account of Chinese history and her own harrowing story.
Why it matters: The Chinese immigrant experience, especially for women, is often overlooked and deserves to be told. Bridging two centuries, this story brings to life themes of displacement, hope, and a woman's coming of age, and brings history to life.
Key messages: Richard Perkins Hsung promised his mother he would complete her memoir. It took him more than ten years. He meticulously compiled and edited her writings, adding family photographs and historical details to create the 3-volume Spring Flower, spanning the 83 years of her life (1931–2014).
The author can also discuss: • How missionaries played a vital and misunderstood role in 20th century China. • Why his mother's US citizenship was blocked, despite her adoptive American parents. • How the rise of Communism destroyed Chinese families for generations. • How language and displacement struggles triggered his mother's depression. • How his mother achieved a successful career as an ophthalmologist despite the odds. • Why he chose to set aside his own career as a professor to complete Spring Flowers. • How he uncovered secrets and truths about his mother's and his own life.
The source: Richard Perkins Hsung was born in China in 1966 and was one of the first teens to leave China legally after Mao’s Cultural Revolution. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago and became a professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, retiring in 2022. He spent ten years editing and completing Spring Flower (Earnshaw Books) by his mother, Jean Tren-Hwa Perkins, MD. The three-volume memoir chronicles her life as an adopted child of American medical missionaries, survivor of China's brutal communist regime, ophthalmologist, immigrant, and mother. Hsung lives in Madison with his wife, where keeping squirrels from digging up his backyard has become a daily scientific obsession. Learn more at Yangtze River by the Hudson Bay. United States
