Guest Occupation: Senator for the District of Columbia, Radio Producer/Host of 'Shadow Politics'
Guest Biography:

Over the past 33 years Senator Brown has been involved in many national and local political campaigns, including six Presidential campaigns. He has also been involved in the past ten consecutive Democratic National Conventions including being an Obama super-delegate in 2008 and 2012. Last November he was reelected with 207,000 votes, that's more votes than eight other United States Senators who are now serving in congress. In addition, he was on the staff of the Democratic National Committee and was a community activists and neighborhood commissioner in his hometown of Washington, DC. Senator Brown is a graduate of the University of Maryland. In 2008 Barack Obama said that, Even without a vote, Senator Brown has always been a strong advocate for the rights of DC residents. As a shadow senator, Brown receives no pay from the government, receives no budget from the government, and cannot vote on matters before the Senate. While he does not have an office in the United States Senate, the Government of the District provides him with an office in City Hall. His office is totally funded by contributions from DC taxpayers. Brown lobbies the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives on behalf of the citizens of the District in their attempt to gain full representation in Congress, self-determination, and eventually admittance to the union as a state. As shadow senator, Brown also works with the District's delegate, mayor, and council to advance the interest of local residents on Federal issues. Brown is a member of the Democratic Party.

Segment Idea--"The Lost Coin" - A Therapist's Personal Adoption Journey and Insights

This segment is about the transformative journey of self-discovery experienced by an adoptee, who also happens to be the father of an adopted son.

The Big Idea: Adoptees are an invisible community, living in plain sight, but whose adopted status is unseen by others. They share a fundamental core experience of separation from their mother or primary caregiver that leaves a deep psychic wound, no matter how well they fare later in life. The powerful effects of this developmental trauma can last a lifetime.

The So-What: Imaginably, there’s an orphan who lives within them. The orphan is homeless, restless, disconnected, and searching for something or someone it can’t find, including its very soul. For some, the orphan’s persistent presence may arise intermittently through feelings and behavior at any stage of life or circumstance. No orphan, however, is beyond redemption. The lost orphan can be found in the shadows and brought to the safety and security of light. Disconnection can be healed by loving reconnection.

Evan Rein
Actor, writer and director
July 26, 2024

Bio 👇

Canadian rising star Evan Rein is set to hit the small screen in a big way as Officer Don Gardner in Hulu’s highly anticipated new series Under the Bridge. Rein joins the ensemble alongside Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six), and Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife). The eight-episode series, based on the gripping book by Rebecca Godfrey, is set to premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on April 17, 2024.

Set against the haunting backdrop of a tragic murder, Under the Bridge chronicles the harrowing true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old who vanished after attending a party. Through the lens of Godfrey (played by Keough) and local police officer Cam Bentland (Gladstone), the series delves into the investigation, unraveling shocking secrets about the young girls accused of Reena’s disappearance. Appearing in five episodes, Rein portrays Officer Don Gardner, a rookie cop determined to earn his place on the Saanich police force as the sleepy Vancouver Island town is left reeling in the wake of Reena’s savage murder. Two episodes premiere on April 17 with new episodes weekly on Wednesdays.

Evan Rein’s other roles cover a broad range of characters, including the lead in the feature film Blue Hour as Lee, an anxious aspiring writer living in rural Alberta. Confounded by the news of an illness in the family and masculinity stereotypes, Lee must decide whether to stay or go. Evan’s performance in Blue Hour garnered nominations for a Leo Award and UBCP/ACTRA Award for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Motion Picture. Blue Hour won the Audience Favourite Award at the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival and picked up a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Leos.

Evan’s career has included several spots on popular series including Upload, Nancy Drew, Heartland, Valley of the Boom, Sacred Lies, Debris, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

As a classically trained actor, Evan’s theatre career has included work on some of North America’s most renowned stages including Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington DC, Bard on the Beach, and Theatre Calgary.

He is currently on stage at Theatre Calgary in the hit Beatles adaptation of As You Like It playing until March 24.

For his leading turn as Micah in How the World Began at Pacific Theatre, Evan’s performance was praised by both critics and audiences. The three-hander drama written by Catherine Trieschmann explores what it means to engage in good faith discussion in a community falling apart amidst disaster and intolerance. How the World Began tops the list as one of Evan’s favourite productions.

Evan was born in Red Deer, Alberta, and raised on a farm in the heart of Central Alberta. Evan’s first interest in acting was when he was in Grade 5 during a drama workshop. In a moment of uninhibited expression, he had his whole class in stitches and from that moment knew acting was his path. He credits his elementary and high school teachers who encouraged him to dream big. The big dreams started with small beginnings, making home movies with his friends and siblings with the family video camera—pure, raw, creative energy that fuels his acting to this day.

Evan now makes his home in Vancouver. In his spare time, you’ll find Evan practicing his Spanish, meditating, and travelling the world.

Guest Biography:

I'm an award-winning student documentarian who is especially interested in building a better future for humanity. Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, my debut film, Growing Peace in the Middle East, documents the amazing story of Jewish and Arab women in Israel being brought together through hydroponic farming and sustainability. To date, the short has earned nominations and wins in 100+ categories globally, including the prestigious London Independent Film Festival and International Human Rights Arts Festival. In 2021, I founded Growing Peace Inc., a non-profit organization that is working to help people around the world access food and become self-sufficient.

Steven Hoffen, a high school teen, was inspired to action following a visit to Sindyanna of Galilee, a nonprofit organization in Israel where Arab and Jewish women work together closely, cultivating social change as they grow produce in hydroponic gardens.

Through a series of remote interviews conducted during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Steven documented Sindyanna’s efforts. There was a meaningful, ongoing collaboration between Palestinian and Israeli women, despite their cultural differences, demonstrating the importance of learning and the economic opportunities grown through the power of agricultural science.

From these interviews, Steven created an original short film, “Growing Peace in the Middle East,” now an award-winning documentary, to help show the world a really unique way that these amazing people are achieving greater independence and opportunity. In this particular case, Sindyanna brings together women whose lives couldn’t be more different and teaches them hydroponic farming skills that help them combat food insecurity while empowering them with meaningful, skilled, uplifting work.

To continue to raise awareness and grow the humanitarian impact of his film, Steven formed the namesake nonprofit Growing Peace Inc. Inspired by the outcomes at Sindyanna, Growing Peace centers around hydroponics as a medium to educate, empower and help those in need. Growing Peace has now installed hydroponic gardens in Israel and throughout New York City.
After Steven's successful fundraising effort, his first hydroponics project to help an underserved community was installed in early 2022. Since then, Steven has worked to bring hydroponics to food pantries and other organizations that help those in need.

“I hope to play my part in improving the world by providing healthy and nutritional food where it is less available and sharing a platform that can help teach others to become more aware of the benefits of farming technologies that improve our climate.”
- Steven Hoffen
