However, they do not teach wisdom to the students, on how to apply their learning for the benefit of all humanity, not just for a select few.

LEGENDARY SINGER-SONGWRITER-MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST

FOR THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL

AND 'WELCOME BACK KOTTER' THEME SONG

J O H N   S E B A S T I A N

ON THE RAY SHASHO SHOW

Over four decades the contributions of John Sebastian have become a permanent part of our American musical fabric. His group The Lovin' Spoonful played a major role in the mid-'60s rock revolution, but what leader, singer and songwriter Sebastian had in mind was actually a counter-revolution. "We were grateful to the Beatles for reminding us our rock & roll roots," John explains, "but we wanted to cut out the English middlemen, so to speak, and get down to making this new music as an 'American' band." This the Lovin' Spoonful did like nobody before or since, putting their first seven singles into the Top 10. This was unprecedented, and utterly unthinkable at the height of Beatlemania. At first they'd taken older material from blues, country, folk and jug band sources - what we now term "roots music" - and made it sound modern. Then, in a series of original songs composed and sung by John Sebastian, they did the reverse, creating thoroughly modern music that sounded like it contained the entire history of American music. Which it did. You know the songs by heart: "Do You Believe In Magic?" "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice." "Daydream." "Younger Girl." "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?" "Summer In The City." "Rain On The Roof." "Nashville Cats." "Six O'Clock." "Darling Be Home Soon." "Younger Generation." These songs did more than simply answer the British invasion, they carried the musical tradition into the future. This music had an immediate and indelible impression on the public consciousness, but John Sebastian was already a name well-known to the cognoscenti.

He was born March 17, 1944 in New York City. His father was a noted classical harmonica player and his mother a writer of radio programs. Regular visitors to the family's Greenwich Village home included Burl Ives and Woody Guthrie, so it was no surprise when young John became a fan of, and then a participant in, the folk music revival that swept the nation in the late '50s.

Making his bow as a member of the Even Dozen Jug Band, his skills on guitar, harmonica and autoharp soon made him a sought-after accompanist on the Village folk scene, working with Fred Neil, Tim Hardin, Mississippi John Hurt, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan and many others. So the Lovin' Spoonful was not his first act, and it certainly wasn't its last. After leaving the group he founded, he bore witness to another turn of the musical zeitgeist with his performances at massive festivals like Woodstock and its English equivalent the Isle of Wight. He had been involved in music for films (most notably Francis Ford Coppola's "You're A Big Boy Now" and Woody Allen's "What's Up Tiger Lily") and Broadway, but when producers of a TV show called "Welcome Back Kotter" commissioned a theme song in 1976, Sebastian's "Welcome Back" became a chart-topping solo record. Throughout the '70s and '80s he continued to record and tour, pleasing old fans and winning new ones.

There's no telling how many aspiring musicians have been nurtured by his instruction books for harmonica and guitar, but he aimed to inspire an even younger audience with the publication in 1993 of the delightful children's book "JB's Harmonica." The '90s also saw John return to the group format with the J-Band, a contemporary celebration of his jug band heritage. The acclaim the group received was gratifying, but bittersweet. The group's albums contain some of the last recorded performances of blues pioneer Yank Rachell and washtub/jug virtuoso Fritz Richmond. Thankfully John's induction into the Rock " Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 hasn't slowed him down. Whether the stage is at Carnegie Hall or a folk festival in some far-flung locale, John is still out there spreading his gospel of American roots music. He is the subject of the current PBS special "Do You Believe In Magic: The Music of John Sebastian," and a new album of duets with David Grisman is due later in 2007. He has also lent his music in support of social, environmental and animal rights causes.

Recently he joined a delegation of songwriters (including Lamont Dozier, Allen and Marilyn Bergman, and Mike Stoller) in Washington, DC to campaign on behalf of the National Music Publisher's Association. Perhaps because it has been the product of heart and soul and history, the oldest song in the Sebastian catalog is as fresh and vital as the song he's about to write tomorrow. That's why you still hear his music everywhere - in movies, on television, in cover versions and samples - and why it's always welcome. John is also a welcome media presence; his commentary, insights and anecdotes and stories are regularly featured in print, radio, TV and film documentary projects. John Sebastian is not only a master musician, writer and performer, he remains one of the best ambassadors American music has ever had.

Guest Occupation: Trainer of Love Athletes
Guest Biography:

Daniel Packard is a Trainer of Love Athletes. Daniel believes that in the same way a physical athlete can train their body for Olympic level sport, a Love Athlete can train their consciousness for Olympic level love.  For over ten years Daniel has been training Love Athletes to experience the triumphant joy of Olympic level love.

TRANSFORMATIONAL ENTERTAINER

Fusing his passion of helping people create better love, with his passion of making people laugh (he was a professional stand up comedian for ten years) Daniel has created several projects (TV, Broadway, Radio) where he delivers his insightful lessons in a entertaining and engaging way.

DANIEL'S BACKGROUND

Amateur To Athlete

Before Daniel was a trainer of Love Athletes, he was himself, a love amateur; meaning no matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried, his love life was always average.  After years of pain and frustration, Daniel eventually saw very clearly the source of his disappointment…the timeless adage “You can’t love somebody, until you love yourself.’

Finding The How

Unfortunately, Daniel realized that while people talk self-love, nobody was really talking about how to actually build that self-love.  So with the courage of a spiritual warrior and the mind of a passionate scientist (he was a mechanical engineer from UC Berkeley) Daniel set off to discover the actual how of building self-love.

Science Of Self-Love

After ten years of experiential and academic research and experimentation, Daniel has built a very precise and clear model of the mechanics of self-love.  This 'Science of Self-Love' he created, gives people a clear and practical understanding of how self-love works, how self-love effects our lives, and how to build self-love on a daily basis.

The Love Gym

His book ‘Love's One Lesson: How One Thing Can Change Everything’ and his online training series ‘Next Level Love’ uses a proprietary process Daniel developed, where Love Athletes can use their lives as an experiential inner workout gym to build strong inner muscles that allow them to love themselves, and others, at the highest level possible.

In over 1100 performances (colleges, churches, companies) throughout 4 continents, Daniel has been using humor to open people up to their potential for love greatness.

LoveLab was a TV reality show Daniel created, that attempted to bring empowering concepts of self-awareness and personal responsibility to mainstream television.

Backed by the producers of 'Book Of Mormon,'  'Live Group Sex Therapy' was a hugely funny one-man-show, that brought clarity and compassion to the battle of the sexes.

Created and hosted by Daniel, FlirtFest is a conscious singles event designed to inspire and encourage people to connect in a way that is more open, authentic and full of F.L.I.R.T.  (Free Love In Real Time).

Guest Biography:

Steven Halpern is a GRAMMY® nominated, award-winning composer, recording artist and producer whose healing music has helped millions worldwide to experience the blessings and benefits of deep relaxation and inner peace.

CHAKRA SUITE, his debut release in 1975 helped establish a quiet revolution and a new genre in contemporary instrumental music. To date it has sold over 700,000 copies. Halpern's cumulative sales exceed 6 million units and his current releases continue to set the standard of excellence in the field.

Based on his own spiritual and health-related experiences, Steven discovered secrets of combining ancient sound healing traditions with quantum biology and energy medicine to produce recordings that support relaxation, stress management, yoga, meditation, massage, sleep, accelerated learning and pure listening pleasure.

Halpern's most representative and best-selling recordings include PEACE OF MIND, MUSIC FOR SOUND HEALING, INNER PEACE, IN THE OM ZONE and the Billboard-charting DEJA-BLUES.

Before focusing on keyboards, in his earlier career, he was a dynamic jazz-rock trumpet player inspired by John Coltrane and Miles Davis, a guitar and bass player with old school R&B bands, and a long-time student of World music and shamanic sound

Steven Halpern is more than just a musician. He is a Renaissance man who is also an author, media spokesperson, seminar leader, pioneering sound healer and entrepreneur who helped create the alternative market for lifestyle-support music outside the traditional music industry. Steven has been recognized by Keyboard magazine as "one of the 30 most influential keyboard artists of the past 50 years."

Steven's music is an ideal complement for meditation, yoga, massage and other therapeutic bodywork, psychological counseling, and accelerated learning. Halpern's music gets listeners "in the zone" and is used by leading business professionals, success coaches like Mark Victor Hansen and Brian Tracy, and entrepreneurs, students and teachers worldwide.

Steven has produced over 70 recordings in the Inner Peace Music® and SoundWave 2000™ subliminal audio series. He has influenced two generations of recording artists and music therapists, and has performed and recorded with a who's who of well-known musicians including: Paul Horn, Paul McCandless, Babatunde Olatunji, Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Rick Derringer and Georgia Kelly.

After being initiated into what he has described as a ministry of healing music, Steven was encouraged to scientifically validate the extraordinary effects his music was having on listeners. This became the focus of his graduate studies, and his landmark research exploring the connections between sound, consciousness and healing were the first to employ the more subtle and sophisticated new technologies of brainwave biofeedback and Kirlian (aura) photography.

This research, and his first two books, Tuning the Human Instrument (1977) and Sound Health (Harper & Row, 1985) established him as the pre-eminent spokesperson for the emerging field of sound healing. He was the first in his field to appear on national television, including The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder. In 1991 he was profiled on CBS-TV's 48 Hours.

Halpern's work has been covered in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle, as well as by CBS, ABC, NBC and the BBC. Steven has written hundreds of articles, as well as a syndicated monthly column for over 20 years.

Since 1975, Steven Halpern, Ph.D. has been a popular speaker at leading holistic health and complimentary healing centers and conferences worldwide: He has presented workshops at Esalen, the Omega Institute, and Kripalu, and has spoken at the Sixth International Conference on Stress (Montreux), the National Music Therapy Association, the American Massage Therapy Association, The International Alliance for Accelerated Learning, The Whole Life Expo, and many others.
