Reese Gaertner is a woodworker, artist, and writer who currently lives and works in Minnesota.

Reese spent most of her childhood years in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She grew up in a split-level house that fortunately had a large, wooded cow pasture on the other side of the backyard fence where she climbed trees, lingered under the branches of virgin maples, and dug through field-stone piles for fossils.

She eventually left for Minnesota and attended Carleton College, where she squeezed art and religion courses in between basketball and softball games.  After college, she earned both an M.Div. and S.T.M degree from Yale University, and did doctoral work in religion, science, and technology at Emory University.  She has served congregations in the United Church of Christ, served as a college chaplain, and taught college and graduate level courses in religion and theology.   More recently, she has been has been practicing mediation and studying Buddhist philosophy, and has been authorized to teach within the Theravadan tradition.

When she shifted gears and began focusing on woodworking and antique restoration, the inner nerd was still very active.  She completed the full-time one-year program in wood finishing and antique restoration at the National Institute for Wood Finishing, and followed that with advanced classes taught be some of the leading wood finishers in the country and by conservationists from the Smithsonian Center for Materials, Research, and Education.

While working in antique restoration, Reese began experimenting with different finishes, veneers, and woodworking projects.  Whenever clients and friends visited, they always noticed whatever experimental piece was sitting in the workshop and wanted to take it home.   Eventually, she stopped restoring antiques and focused on making her own artistic work.

Reese Gaertner's work has been a part of some of the nation's best shows, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, the American Craft Council Shows, and CraftNEWYORK, and is owned by collectors in the Midwest, New York, and Madrid, Spain.

Dr. Eran Elhaik

Career

  • BSc (1999) Israel, Open University (double major in Computer Science and Business)
  • PhD (2009) Texas, University of Houston
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2009-2011) Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2011-2013) Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, School of Public Health
  • Research Associate (2013-2013) Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, School of Public Health
  • Lecturer (2014-present) University of Sheffield

Dr. Elhaik's research centers on identifying and addressing BIG QUESTIONS in biology from multiple fields such as:

  • Complex disorders, particularly mental health disorders
  • Population genetics (biogeography, population structure, DNA reconstruction)
  • Personalised medicine (prescribing medicine based on biogeography)
  • Molecular evolution (molecular clocks, evolution rates)
  • Genomics (genome evolution, phylogeny)
  • Paleo-genomics (Adam Y chromosome, ancient genomes)
  • Epigenetics (methylation, gene expression, regulation)

My research is multidisciplinary and requires computational and statistical skills alongside epidemiological and mathematical skills. For example, in Elhaik (2013a) I designed a dedicated microarray for genetic genealogy, in Elhaik (2013b) I showed that the origin of European Jews is from the Khazars, in Elhaik (2014a) I dated the most ancient human Y chromosome known as "Adam" Y chromosome, and in Elhaik (2014b) I developed the GPS tool that uses DNA to predict geographical origin of populations with an extreme accuracy.

Current research topics include:

  • Identifying the environmental causes of autism and developing therapeutic methods
  • Identifying the "Missing Link" between human and ape
  • Predicting the geographical origins of ancient populations
  • Developing applications for personalised medicine and stem cell therapy

Dr. Elhaik will discuss his study...

The Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses

Abstract

The question of Jewish ancestry has been the subject of controversy for over two centuries and has yet to be resolved. The “Rhineland Hypothesis” depicts Eastern European Jews as a „population isolate” that emerged from a small group of German Jews who migrated eastward and expanded rapidly. Alternatively, the „Khazarian Hypothesis” suggests that Eastern European Jew descended from the Khazars, an amalgam of Turkic clans that settled the Caucasus in the early centuries CE and converted to Judaism in the 8th century. Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman Jews continuously reinforced the Judaized Empire until the 13th century. Following the collapse of their empire, the Judeo-Khazars fled to Eastern Europe. The rise of European Jewry is therefore explained by the contribution of the Judeo-Khazars. Thus far, however, the Khazar's contribution has been estimated only empirically, as the absence of genome-wide data from Caucasus populations precluded testing the Khazarian Hypothesis. Recent sequencing of modern Caucasus populations prompted us to revisit the Khazarian Hypothesis and compare it with the Rhineland Hypothesis. We applied a wide range of population genetic analyses to compare these two hypotheses. Our findings support the Khazarian Hypothesis and portray the European Jewish genome as a mosaic of Caucasus, European, and Semitic ancestries, thereby consolidating previous contradictory reports of Jewish ancestry. We further describe major difference among Caucasus populations explained by early presence of Judeans in the Southern and Central Caucasus. Our results have important implications on the demographic forces that shaped the genetic diversity in the Caucasus and medical studies.

Dr. Elhaik's study challenges commonly held assumptions about Jewish ancestry. Instead of being primarily the descendants of the 12 tribes of Israel, present-day Jewish populations are, finds Elhaik, primarily the children of a Turkish people who lived in what is now Russia, north of Georgia, east of Ukraine. This civilization, the Khazars, converted from tribal religions to Judaism between the 7th and 9th centuries.

Bio Acoustic Sond Health

BioAcoustics is the medicine of the future.

Robert O'Leary, BA (UMASS@Amherst-Class of '89), JD (WNEC School of Law-Class of '92), BioAcoustic Research Associate & Soundhealth Practitioner (BARA - Institute of BioAcoustic Biology - July, 2011), has had an abiding interest in alternative health since the early 1970's when he was inspired, by an American Lung Association commercial at school, to go home & convince his parents to quit 15 years of smoking. They did, & then the family adopted more holistic & healthy life-style choices which benefitted their lives.

Thereafter, Robert became an attorney, earned advanced martial arts belt levels [in Kajukenbo (the Emperado Method) & American Kempo under Grandmaster Kalaii Kano Griffin & some of his Instructors], became a singer/songwriter performer [releasing 3 regional CD's with his brothers, Paul & Seanunder the group name, Future Now], & his greatest & proudest achievement -becoming a Father. Robert brought this background to a new field - BioAcoustic Soundhealth [a/k/a "Vocal Profiling" & "BioAcoustic Biology"] - for which he became a practitioner in July, 2011, through Albany, OH's Institute of BioAcoustic Biology. This alternative modality, called an "Integrative Medicine " by the NIH, is relatively new to New England. It works by analyzing voice recordings in order to get information, about a client's state of health, to provide them with information & tones which will support their body's ability to self-heal & beautify. Robert is proud to have the opportunity to bring the knowledge & benefits of this modality to individuals & businesses in the New England States; through the opening of his office, RoMaYa Sound Health & Beauty, in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

Since November, 2014, Robert has been 1 of the editors and writers at consciouslifenews.com Robert O'Leary & his family wish you nothing but the best in health & beauty.
