Building Morale Through Positive, Proactive Leadership

It's time to take the next step in emergency management leadership by adopting a new way of thinking. On this episode, we’ll be speaking with John Lynch, Town of Wilton CT Chief of Police & Emergency Management Director, and Nick Paproski, Director Of ALS Operations at Vintech Management Services, about what you can do to become an engaged, proactive leader.

Progressive fire, police and EMS agencies are switching from reactive to proactive leadership styles and effectiveness, which involves being open to new ideas, and the willingness to take action. While a good leader has a clear, concise vision of where they want an organization to go, poor leaders don’t lead, causing the organization to drift along, damaging morale and hurting employee retention. We discuss multiple ways to bring positive change to organizations which may be struggling with toxic, ineffective leaders.

The purpose of this episode is to inspire and motivate supervisors who face challenges in their role. When leadership is done right, it means that the police, fire or EMS agency team is engaged, proactive and resilient, which is the foundation to being successful in emergency services. Chief Lynch and Nick explain the importance of being a leader who maintains an awareness of their member’s physical and mental well-being.  When you're a leader who advocates for your department members, your members will respect you because they feel your heart and passion. It's all about creating a bond of trust and commitment.

John Lynch has been a Police officer since 1985. He is a volunteer fireman, EMT, chief of police, emergency management director, and Region 1 ESF 13 representative.  Chief Lynch has a Masters in Public Administration and Bachelors degree in criminal justice, and heads a police department with a 97% community approval rating.

Nick Paproski is an award-winning paramedic field provider and educator who’s worked in municipal, fire based, commercial and volunteer EMS systems. Nick currently serves as the Director of Operations for Vintech Management Services, a 300 employee EMS staffing company based in CT. A staunch advocate for provider mental health and wellness, Nick routinely presents on the topic of PTSD for the Fairfield Country Trauma Response Team.

Episode 5-Why You Must Give Up the Belief That You Must Plan

Join Psychic, Medium Shelly J. Miller as she shares the teachings of Jesus from A Course in Miracles as to exactly why you must give up the belief that you must plan, and how to live your daily life in the absence of making plans. What an outrageous thought! Learn why planning actually keeps you from your happiness and the experience of your Immortal Self. Our intellectual, goal oriented mind must become the servant of the Higher Mind, to access the Wisdom of the Infinite Mind of God which you can and must be Guided by at all times. Learn why it is essential to follow the plans God has for you rather than your plan for God. When we plan, we act from fear that we will not be provided for. Imagine the security in understanding how to refocus your life in a way that you need only follow Holy Spirit in every move you make. Jesus said he was the “Ultimate Follower” and Shelly will share the daily steps to take that will securely lead you to your healing, to your happiness, and Home to the end of pain and suffering and Oneness with God.

Interviewing The Legends Guest, Mark Farner April 20, 2021
Legendary guitarist-singer-songwriter from Grand Funk Railroad

M   A   R   K

F   A   R   N   E   R

Legendary all-American frontman and guitarist, Mark Farner, was the engine that pulled the original Grand Funk Railroad repeatedly to the top of the charts, and today he’s a platinum recording artist 30 times over. At age 71, Farner commands the stage with the same intensity and outpouring of love as he did during the summer of ’69 and his fans are still flocking to see “the Captain.” The rock patriot’s synergy and open heart still come through in epic hits that defined a generation including— “I’m Your Captain” (Closer to Home)”  “We’re An American Band” “Heartbreaker” “Bad Time To Be In Love” and recut covers of  “The Loco-Motion” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”  Being viewed as a “Rockstar” is only one facet of the legacy of this Michigan-born son.   Mark is as real as they get: he’s a husband, a father, and grandfather, and in his fourth decade of marriage to wife Lesia. He’s a true family man.

“I think our fans originally connected to our songs because we were sincere” Farner said. “My lyrics were about Mother Earth, stopping the war, and all about love. They still have a point of reference with me in their heart.”

After the 1969 Atlantic Pop Festival put Grand Funk Railroad on the fast track, the band topped the Billboard Chart twice with both the anthem “We’re an American Band” (1973) and 1974’s “The Loco-Motion.” The Flint, Michigan trio reached the top 10 again with “Some Kind of Wonderful” (No. 3) and “Bad Time” (No. 4) before GFR disbanded for the first time in 1976. Farner briefly rejoined Grand Funk during the 1980s and 1990s and he has collaborated with many other artists over the years.  However, his focus has been to forge an enduring solo career based upon bringing his message of love to his fans in all corners of the world.

“Love is unconditional,” he explains. “Just like when you hold a baby, the love transfers. I feel that love from the audience when I’m on stage.”

The son of a World War II veteran, four-time bronze star recipient and career fireman, Farner also knows the importance of brotherhood and commitment. On his mother’s side, he champions his Cherokee heritage and the fact that his mother was the first woman welder in the United States to weld on a tank during World War 2. It just so happened to be the same type of Sherman tanks his father drove. Farner’s work on and off the stage is focused on honoring service personnel and veterans and offering support to American farmers, individuals with disabilities, and downtrodden populations.

Farner, the rock patriot that he is, works tirelessly to honor our nation’s service personnel and Veterans wherever they are stationed. He wants everyone to remember the huge sacrifices our men and women in the armed services freely give; all to protect our amazing country and freedoms.

Over 50 years later something magical still happens when Farner takes the stage.  His voice is still strong and on key, his guitar playing still slick and lighting quick, and his trademark prancing still commands the stage and mesmerizes his audiences around the world.

“I love playing live where I can connect with people of all backgrounds,” he said. “It’s all about the fans…and all about love.”

Life Changes Show Guest, Peter Sterling April 19, 2021
Visual Artist, Musician

PETER STERLING

When the muse comes calling to any person interested in the arts, she is not always instantly heeded, but perhaps stays in the back on the person’s mind, sometimes for years. Like a lingering memory of something pleasant, she waits patiently for the stars to align and serendipity to enter the picture and that is when the muse is embraced by the person. For some, it happens early in life but for others, it may not occur until a much later period in life. This was the case for Peter Sterling.

Born in Santa Monica, Peter began playing the piano at 6 years old, first accompanying his brother who was practicing violin. For a period of four months, he played, solely by ear, for his mother’s and his own pleasure. After a family friend heard and watched Peter playing, the friend chastised him, saying he was “doing it wrong.” As would almost any child, Peter resented the statement, and stopped playing right after that.

His muse sensed his despair. However, all things come to those who waits Peter’s wait lasted more than a few years. When he was 33, he was earning a living as a ski instructor to celebrities in Aspen, Colorado. It was a good living, but from out of the depths of his memory, his muse called to him. Her siren song was not to be ignored and Peter moved to Sedona, Arizona, drawn to its energy vortices, its natural beauty, and its powerful connection to a higher purpose in life. It was in Sedona that Peter discovered his affinity for, or more accurately, his mystical connection with the Celtic harp. It was 1993 and he took to the instrument, without any formal training or lessons, like the proverbial fish to water. His playing talent sprung forth in an almost organic manner, surprising Peter most of all. As part of this emergence of his muse, and tapping into the positive energies that swirl around Sedona, Peter decided that it was time to rethink much of his life. Making changes to his diet, engaging in energy healing, chiropractic medicine, herbal treatments, and shamanic workshops, Peter “came out of the shadows,” as it were and emerged a wholly changed person.

His career as a recording artist began in 1994 with his first album, Harp Magic, released on the World Disc label. Success came almost immediately as the recording was nominated for the Best Instrumental Album award by NAIRD (now A2IM), an organization for independent musicians. His acclaim continued and grew exponentially in the 2000s with multiple nominations from the prestigious website New Age Reporter/Zone Music Reporter, including several nominations for Album of the Year. His albums consistently charted high up in their top 100, including grabbing the #1 spot for his 2013 release, Twilight Serenade. While his recent works are released on his own Harp Magic label (including his 2018 album, Magic Kingdom), Real Music, one of the giants of new age music, released his Shadow, Mist and Light album in 2005. His most recent recognition came in 2017 when he shared the Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best New Age song.

Besides his music, Peter is also a stained glass and visual artist and has been since before he began playing the harp. His beautiful art work decorates the interior of his Sedona house (including a gallery of his Portals of Light crystal alchemy paintings) which he shares with his son 7-year old son Micah (Peter is a stay at home father and loves it!). In the little spare time he has, he also conducts Jeep tours of Sedona’s canyons for private clients and he is also heavily involved with the growing CBD hemp industry. Even with such a full plate as he has, Peter found time to write a book, Hearing the Angels Sing, and he also conducts workshops on the science of sound healing and sacred geometry.

When he is asked “What is the best part of being a musician?” Peter answers “Creating music that touches the heart and soul of listeners…bring[ing] peace and healing to people all over the world. I love receiving letters about how my music has touched peoples’ lives.” Peter looks back at his path to the present now and humbled at his worldwide success. Back when he was recording his first 8-track compositions on a cassette tape in Byron Bay, Australia, and then marketing it by going door-to-door to Sedona’s stores, he could scarcely imagine that one day his music would reach people across the planet through international airplay (Pandora, SiriusXM, Soundscapes), as well as on major airlines (United and American). Sometimes, it pays to wait for just the right moment to open oneself to one’s muse.

Chuck and Julie Show Guest, Bruce Baker April 19, 2021
Former Westminster City Council member

I grew up in the Denver Metro Area, graduated from Lakewood High School, graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Pharmacy and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry.  After the Army I spent over three decades as a Retail Pharmacist.  I'm married, have 3 children and 4 grandchildren.  I served on City Council from 2013 to 2017.  I have shared my views on the path to better government widely; in several opinion articles, a research  paper and many letters to the editor in local papers.  I consider candidates that refuse to give specific, detailed answers to questions about what they want of accomplish as typical politicians, unhelpful to voters and demeaning to the election process.  Good Government needs openness and transparency, especially in the consideration process.   Thru my actions I have worked toward that end.

Elect Bruce Baker to Westminster City Council

I will keep Westminster green by voting to lower the water rates so we can afford to water our landscapes

I will keep Westminster less crowded by honoring the intent of our Open Space Tax and Comprehensive Plan and not increasing housing densities.

I will keep Westminster a good place to live by refocusing the attention of Council on the people that live here TODAY instead of wasting millions of dollars on becoming "the next urban center of the Colorado Front Range.

I will end the ridiculous use of 'consultants' for jobs that should be done by city staff.

The members of City Council should be the stewards of city assets and should use those assets to allow the people of Westminster make their homes, neighborhoods and businesses attractive, inviting places.

The harmful choice that council has made, like the excessive water rates or jamming in thousands of apartments, will harm our homes, neighborhoods and businesses.

When I served on council from 2013 to 2017, I fought for the needs of the people of Westminster and thrifty, smart, efficient, responsive government.  I have the passion, experience and knowledge to reverse the harmful choices that have been made by council.  It is time we return the mission of council to serving the people rather than the ridiculous fantasies and corrupt deals that are wasting our tax dollars.
