In this two part mini-documentary, Responder Resilience does a deep dive into the topic of first responder retirement. We are joined by a panel of twenty one retired or active first responders and resilience experts, representing law enforcement, the fire service, EMS, dispatch, animal control, and mental health clinicians.
Most people view retirement as something to look forward to with joy and anticipation. At the same time, when it comes to life stressors, retirement is among the top 10. It’s the nature of most law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers and firefighters to put others' needs first. They sacrifice time with family to serve the community - working long hours, overtime, nights, holidays and weekends.
When it comes to preparing for their own retirement, unfortunately, many first responders put off important decisions or neglect to ask critical questions. First responders certainly deserve a fulfilling and well-funded retirement, but preparation is crucial. This episode will explore some essential criteria to ensure a rewarding career all the way from hire to retire.

Law overturned by Congress, Called before Committee, what Next? In Honor of Women's History Month, BARBARA LANG Talks Business, Council & Congress! It was ill-conceived of our City Council to send up a bill on the revision of DC's criminal code when the Republicans are attacking Democrats all over the country as being soft on crime. For the first time in a generation, both houses of Congress have overturned a District law and the president has vowed to sign it. Republicans have already put in another resolution of disapproval for an existing DC law and called two council members and additional DC government employees before the House Oversight Committee.

Author and Speaker
At the age of 12, Dr. Nancy Wiley became fascinated by how certain people seemingly manifest things into their lives -- when she manifested a beautiful thoroughbred jumper for herself.
After reading The Power of Your Subconscious Mind just a few short years later, she began to understand how she had created this. Simultaneously, she also began a lifelong practice of meditation that resulted in the attainment of Unity Consciousness. With her continuing experience and ever-growing confidence in navigating through her inner realm, she was able to reach a state whereby she no longer suffers, no matter what life presents. Her Trust in Source has become unshakeable.
From direct experience, she is now absolutely certain that there is a Divine Presence that wants everyone to know It and Trust It. For the past eight years, she has been enrolled in the Inner Circle of a comprehensive program called Your Year of Miracles where she became clear that her next Divine Assignment was to assist others in opening to the state of Trust in the Divine, as she has done. In her new book, Divine Trust: A Practical Guide to End Suffering and Find Your Way Home,, she lays out a blueprint that anyone can easily follow to achieve this incredible state of Divine bliss and trust for themselves and thereby achieve freedom from suffering.
Dr. Nancy Wiley spent 27 years building a highly successful orthodontics practice in Florida. It was the school tragedy in Parkland that spurred her to feel the time was right to create and bring through Divine Trust. With the loss of one her own patients and the sorrow of so many around her, she felt introducing Divine Trust would be a path to healing for many.
Dr. Nancy Wiley now dedicates herself to igniting a massive shift in human conscious, using Divine Trust as the cornerstone.

, “The Speeddoctor”, former Canadian Olympic Gold Medal sprinter & founder @airblastoffsports.
In the only Olympic race he ever ran, Robert Esmie became an Olympic champion. He was the lead off runner of the gold medal winning Canadian 4x100m relay team at Atlanta 1996 with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and 100m Olympic champion Donovan Bailey. Replacing an injured Carlton Chambers who ran in the first two rounds, Esmie showed up to the Olympic relay final with the words “Relay Blast Off” shaved into his head in an attempt to relax his team mates and shut down the partisan crowd, while wearing a t-shirt that said “Relax. You’ve been erased” in hopes that he would get the mental advantage over American lead off runner Jon Drummond – which he did when he caught him reading his t-shirt.
Despite being in a minor traffic accident enroute to the stadium and the relay final being delayed by a disqualification, Esmie ran the race of his life. He had a considerable lead in the first 60 metres with a perfect baton exchange with Gilbert, who had a great leg of his own. After anchorman Bailey crossed the finish line, Esmie fetched Chambers from the stadium so the whole team could celebrate together. He grabbed the baton which Bailey had thrown to the ground in celebration. Since the event was introduced to the Olympic programme in 1912, no one had ever beaten the United States to the finish line in an Olympic final they had actually started.
Esmie was a consistent member of the Canadian 4x100m relay program that dominated the 1990s. He won golds at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, 1995 and 1997 World Championships, and bronze at the 1993 World Championships. Individually, Esmie won the 60m bronze medal at the 1995 World Indoor Championships and made the 100m semi-final at the 1993 World Championships.
Born in Jamaica, Esmie moved to Sudbury, Ontario at age 11 attending Lasalle Secondary School. By Grade 10, he signed with Nike, as one of the youngest athletes ever. His mother Mavis wanted him to become a medical doctor, which he said he would do if his Olympic dreams didn’t come true. After spending 22 years in Vancouver, British Columbia, Esmie returned to his hometown of Sudbury with his wife and children to look after his ailing mother. Esmie remained involved in sport and high-performance track and speed training to help athletes from all disciplines reach their fitness goals.
As a member of the men’s relay team, Esmie was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004 and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
Doctor, MD, MPS, FACS, Ophthalmologist
Brian C. Joondeph completed his training as a retina surgeon in 1990 and since then has worked both in private practice and full-time academic ophthalmology. He practiced in Michigan for ten years before taking his family on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to work and live in Auckland, New Zealand for several years. He has been in Denver for the past 15 years after returning from his academic retina position down under. Denver was a great fit for his family after New Zealand given the opportunity for outdoor adventure and sports.
Dr. Joondeph grew up in northern New Jersey with his entire family in medicine or allied professions, making medical school an easy choice. Ophthalmology provided a high-tech blend of medicine and surgery, with retina further exemplifying these features. There is little in medicine more satisfying than saving or restoring eyesight, arguably the most precious of our senses.
Dr. Joondeph has more than 80 academic publications and is a current and past investigator in multiple clinical trials. He enjoys clinical research as it links scientific inquiry with eventual new treatments he can offer to his patients. He is also an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, helping develop the next generation of ophthalmologists. Dr. Joondeph is widowed and has three adult children.
When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. His hobbies include golfing, skiing, fitness, and travel. When not in clinic, you will find Dr. J in the mountains or visiting a foreign country

humanitarian and Spiritual Warrior, Blogger, Book Publisher, Consultant and Datasets Connector
MYRNA JAMES
Myrna is a humanitarian and Spiritual Warrior who finds herself at the nexus of science and spirituality. After working for national magazines in Chicago for a decade, she did her first “life course-correction” – traveling the world solo for 18 months, blogging before it was a word. This was when she realized she is a seeker of truth and beauty.
Course-correction number two was starting her own media company 20 years ago, publishing 9 books and 80+ issues of Apogeo Spatial magazine (www.ApogeoSpatial.com), which is about data from space to study the earth. This experience has given her a broad view of how data is used, allowing her to see hidden connections. As geodata became immersed into most datasets, and is being used to program algorithms for ML (Machine Learning) and AI (Artificial Intelligence), the need for ethics in AI became evident. She now consults with companies to create those boundaries so that humanity remains in the center of the process, rather than robotics or transhumanism (www.aiethics.world).
Similar to how her role as publisher allowed for a broad view of geodata, seeing the earth from space expands perspective to wholeness, to Oneness (called “The Overview Effect”). This view shows the exquisite beauty of the planet without the visible separation of national boundaries. We can see that we are all here together – we are One. Images show truth, and the earth from space is pure beauty. This expanded worldview from viewing the earth from space or from traveling the world increases our consciousness.
She hosts a live show for Her Many Voices (www.HerManyVoices.org), and serves on the Global Advisory Board at Geoversity (www.Geoversity.org). She just wrapped a tv show about space interviewing astronauts and entrepreneurs, which will air on PBS later this summer (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqtLkBfZP9IQ_SOUfIdWCHYeo8DRWTACq).
Myrna’s third course-correction was getting divorced. The pain of divorce set her on the path of deep reflection, and personal and spiritual growth. She recently wrote about the power of intuition and empathy in the international best-selling book, “U Empath You,” sharing her personal story of healing and transformation.
The thread that runs through her life is the importance of health for humanity (physical, mental and spiritual), and how it is tied to the health of the planet. All of life resonates at certain frequencies according to quantum physics, and we can control our energy by consciously connecting our hearts with our minds, creating a healthy energetic coherence. As sovereign beings, we have agency and can create Oneness and unity. This is the nexus of science and spirituality.
Myrna lives with her awesome adopted autistic teenage son in Denver near a creek where she walks every day when she’s not traveling.
