For 22 years Dr. Shumsky lived in Maharishi's ashrams (residential learning institutions) in remote, secluded areas of the Himalayan Mountains of India, the Swiss Alps, and the Heartland of America. She served on Maharishi's personal staff for seven of those years. In the ashram, she often meditated up to 20 hours a day, never emerging from her room up to 8 weeks at a time.
