Today’s guest is the wonderful Linda McIver
Dr Linda McIver pioneered authentic Data Science and Computational Science education with real impact for secondary students and founded the Australian Data Science Education Institute in 2018.
Author of Raising Heretics: Teaching Kids to Change the World, Linda is an inspiring keynote speaker who has appeared on the ABC’s panel program Q&A, and regularly delivers engaging Professional Development for Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Educators across all disciplines.
A passionate educator, researcher and advocate for STEM, equity and inclusion, with a PhD in Computer Science Education and extensive teaching experience, Linda’s mission is to ensure that all Australian students have the opportunity to learn STEM and Data Science skills in the context of projects that empower them to solve problems and make a positive difference to the world.

Kez - Lets start at the beginning Linda - why did you become a teacher?

Toni - What frustrated you about the education system?

Kez - Why did you found a data science education charity – the Australian Data Science Education Institute?

Toni – For those in the audience who might not be familiar with Data Science – what is it and why is it soooo important?

Kez – Tell me more about the charities work and how you help kids and teachers?

Toni – There’s is a great blog on the ADSEI site and I want to draw your attention to it before we get to the book – Is medicine as scientific as we think – it’s a great blog Linda and you allude to the “God complex” we still see in medicine and which I know and am distressed to still see play out again and again. Can you tell us about your daughters story? Listen to your body, intuition works with science and medicine, reading, research (quantify this for the listeners)

The Author and Artist Hour
Kez is ever the storyteller and a popular speaker at many local events; However mentoring others to tell their stories has become a large part of Kez’s life, running creative writing workshops for those that have a story to tell.
Encouraging and mentoring others to follow their passion for writing has resulted in four of her writing protégés becoming published authors. Kez also invites published authors in fiction to contact her, as she enjoys introducing their work to Facebook and Instagram by video.
