Integrative Hermetic Health with Johnny Blue Star
In today’s show, we analyze two important articles and their reportage on significant elements affecting the awareness and state of healthcare in America. The first is an article called “Nutrition Education in Medical School, Residency Training and Practice” by two authors. The first is Doctor Devrie, Executive Director of the Gables Institute. This organization creates nutrition courses for medical students, filling the enormous vacancy left by the absence of such training in medical school and specialist medical training in nutrition. The other author, Dr. Willet has done research from the National Institute of Health and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, is the author various books on nutrition and epidemiology and has received recognition for his teaching in the Culinary Institute of America. Dr. Rodier, the host of the Integrative Hermetic Health Show recognizes the great contributions both writers have contributed to his career, which is partially as a populizer of the importance of nutrition in medicine to a more general audience, an audience which has been deprived of the expert help in nutrition by virtue of the still largely pharmaceutically directed medical establishment. Doctor Rodier explains why today, still perhaps unknown to much of the public, is the Golden Age of Nutrition, meaning that much of the really top-level research has been done within the last few decades, confirming what these authors and Doctor Rodier were saying quite some time before.
The second article, also represented by a Video, was published and broadcast by CBS and is a short but startling description of the effect of social media on the mental health of teenagers. This was based on an article published by the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. The article in the APA publication describes “a nationally representative survey of U.S. adolescents and adults, assessing age, period, and cohort trends in mood disorders and suicide-related outcomes since the mid-2000s” The startling report states that the “Rates of major depressive episode in the last year increased 52% 2005–2017 (from 8.7% to 13.2%) among adolescents aged 12 to 17 and 63% 2009 –2017 (from 8.1% to 13.2%) among young adults 18 –25. Serious psychological distress in the last month and suicide-related outcomes (suicidal ideation, plans, attempts, and deaths by suicide) in the last year also increased among young adults 18 –25 from 2008 –2017 (with a 71% increase in serious psychological distress), with less consistent and weaker increases among adults ages 26 and over.”
