Headlined Show, Responder Resilience March 22, 2023

In this two part mini-documentary, Responder Resilience does a deep dive into the topic of first responder retirement. We are joined by a panel of twenty one retired or active first responders and resilience experts, representing law enforcement, the fire service, EMS, dispatch, animal control, and mental health clinicians.

Most people view retirement as something to look forward to with joy and anticipation. At the same time, when it comes to life stressors, retirement is among the top 10.  It’s the nature of most law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers and firefighters to put others' needs first. They sacrifice time with family to serve the community -  working long hours, overtime, nights, holidays and weekends.

When it comes to preparing for their own retirement, unfortunately, many first responders put off important decisions or neglect to ask critical questions.  First responders certainly deserve a fulfilling and well-funded retirement, but preparation is crucial.  This episode will explore some essential criteria to ensure a rewarding career all the way from hire to retire.

Our guests include Ernest Stevens, Jonni Redick, John Kelly, Patrick Fitzgibbons, Mike Gagliano, Dr. Olivia Johnson, Scott Medlin, Adam A. Meyers, David H. Ferris Jr., Ray Connors, Angela Matthews, Edmund Russell, Peter Marengo, Matt Domyancic, Jeff Ward, Steve Zagami, Dan Welch, Mike Grasso, Gordon MacCalla, Kasey Brainerd and Denise Beard.

Headlined Show, Shadow Politics March 19, 2023

Law overturned by Congress, Called before Committee, what Next?  In Honor of Women's History Month, BARBARA LANG Talks Business, Council & Congress! It was ill-conceived of our City Council to send up a bill on the revision of DC's criminal code when the Republicans are attacking Democrats all over the country as being soft on crime. For the first time in a generation, both houses of Congress have overturned a District law and the president has vowed to sign it. Republicans have already put in another resolution of disapproval for an existing DC law and called two council members and additional DC government employees before the House Oversight Committee.

Headlined Show, Life Changing Moments April 1, 2023

CREATING A “RIGHT” RELATIONSHIP… with our children…young and old!

Having a good connection with our children of ALL ages (birth to 50+) is so wonderful.  It allows for peaceful conversations, peace of mind and pleasant interactions.  And when the connection isn’t good, it can create disharmony, inner struggles and often an unpleasant state of mind.

There are many aspects to parenting, so in this program I’m just going to focus on one that I’ve come to call:

“CREATING A FIELD OF FREEDOM”

When we create a “Field of Freedom” for our children, they are able to be within that field/ space and exercise their freedom.  When I was teaching in preschool & elementary school, I loved to create an art center with a variety of materials and allow the children to create whatever they wanted to.  In addition, I loved to set up home environments where the children were free to play with all the toys and knew they could be creative and have fun.

With teenagers, I found that I could also give them “Fields of Freedom” in which to explore and live, knowing and hoping that they had already embodied what they needed to know in order to use good judgement in whatever situation they encountered.

When our children become adults, and especially in the world we live in today, where every adult seems to have a little different view on life and how to live, I believe that creating a “Field of Freedom” for all is crucial.  Once a child turns 21 they really graduate into adulthood and have the right to choose their lifestyle, make their own choices and reap the consequences.  And yet as a caring parent this might be very difficult to observe.  How can we still be a caring parent, wanting the best for our adult children and as the same time allow them to live in a “Field of Freedom”.  This is not always easy terrain to walk on.

During this program, I will share some LIFE CHANGING MOMENTS that I’ve experienced and have supported me in navigating ‘Fields of Freedom” for my “children” of all ages…birth and into their 50’s!

Life Changes Show Guest, DR KAREN V JOHNSON June 20, 2022
Former federal judge and shamanic spiritual practitioner of healing

KAREN V. JOHNSON, JD

Karen Johnson’s 27 year-old son Ben died due to a drug overdose. One night he was at a party with his friends, they got drunk and decided to try heroin for the first time. While all of his friends tried the same drug, Ben was the only one to overdose.  Instead of calling 911 and give Ben the lifesaving help he needed, the dealer spent his time disposing of the drugs and cleaning his place of evidence, all while Ben lay there dying.

Karen’s fast-paced life and 30-year career as a federal judge came to an abrupt halt as she was enveloped in unrelenting grief for the loss of her son. It was immediately after his death that Ben’s spirit began to communicate with her, and while this level of connection was foreign to Karen, she followed Ben’s nudges and her world has never been the same.

Having an unsupportive work, that initially allowed Karen only 2-hours off to attend her son’s funeral, she became unable to reconcile her working life with her communications with the spirit world. So Karen did the unexpected, she quit her job, sold her house with all her belongings, and went on a 2½ year journey that took her all over the world.

Led by her son in spirit, Karen’s path took her to a shamanic spiritual practice of healing.

Karen V. Johnson, JD, is a graduate of Georgetown Law Center (J.D.), a former Fulbright Scholar in Afghanistan, and holds Masters Degrees in Public Health and Public and International Affairs (MPH, MPIA). Karen is a retired federal administrative law judge who practiced criminal and energy law for more than 30 years. She also is a former U.S. Army officer, Major, USAR (inactive). Karen was personally trained by Alberto Villoldo, and is faculty at the Four Winds Society and a Master Practitioner of Energy Medicine.

“Living Grieving: Using Energy Medicine to Alchemize Grief and Loss” (Hay House, July 7, 2021), is her first book.

“In this time of what feels like fast-food spirituality, it’s refreshing to hear from a shamanic kindred sister who has undergone such a powerful journey so fully and has reemerged to reclaim her new life while sharing her wisdom and journey with the world.”

New Reality Solutions Guest, Dr Nancy Wiley June 17, 2022
Author and Speaker

At the age of 12, Dr. Nancy Wiley became fascinated by how certain people seemingly manifest things into their lives -- when she manifested a beautiful thoroughbred jumper for herself.

After reading The Power of Your Subconscious Mind just a few short years later, she began to understand how she had created this. Simultaneously, she also began a lifelong practice of meditation that resulted in the attainment of Unity Consciousness. With her continuing experience and ever-growing confidence in navigating through her inner realm, she was able to reach a state whereby she no longer suffers, no matter what life presents. Her Trust in Source has become unshakeable.

From direct experience, she is now absolutely certain that there is a Divine Presence that wants everyone to know It and Trust It. For the past eight years, she has been enrolled in the Inner Circle of a comprehensive program called Your Year of Miracles where she became clear that her next Divine Assignment was to assist others in opening to the state of Trust in the Divine, as she has done. In her new book, Divine Trust: A Practical Guide to End Suffering and Find Your Way Home,, she lays out a blueprint that anyone can easily follow to achieve this incredible state of Divine bliss and trust for themselves and thereby achieve freedom from suffering.

Dr. Nancy Wiley spent 27 years building a highly successful orthodontics practice in Florida. It was the school tragedy in Parkland that spurred her to feel the time was right to create and bring through Divine Trust. With the loss of one her own patients and the sorrow of so many around her, she felt introducing Divine Trust would be a path to healing for many.

Dr. Nancy Wiley now dedicates herself to igniting a massive shift in human conscious, using Divine Trust as the cornerstone.

The Sports Doctor Guest, Robert Esmie June 15, 2022
, “The Speeddoctor”, former Canadian Olympic Gold Medal sprinter & founder @airblastoffsports.

In the only Olympic race he ever ran, Robert Esmie became an Olympic champion. He was the lead off runner of the gold medal winning Canadian 4x100m relay team at Atlanta 1996 with Glenroy Gilbert, Bruny Surin and 100m Olympic champion Donovan Bailey. Replacing an injured Carlton Chambers who ran in the first two rounds, Esmie showed up to the Olympic relay final with the words “Relay Blast Off” shaved into his head in an attempt to relax his team mates and shut down the partisan crowd, while wearing a t-shirt that said “Relax. You’ve been erased” in hopes that he would get the mental advantage over American lead off runner Jon Drummond – which he did when he caught him reading his t-shirt.

Despite being in a minor traffic accident enroute to the stadium and the relay final being delayed by a disqualification, Esmie ran the race of his life. He had a considerable lead in the first 60 metres with a perfect baton exchange with Gilbert, who had a great leg of his own. After anchorman Bailey crossed the finish line, Esmie fetched Chambers from the stadium so the whole team could celebrate together. He grabbed the baton which Bailey had thrown to the ground in celebration. Since the event was introduced to the Olympic programme in 1912, no one had ever beaten the United States to the finish line in an Olympic final they had actually started.

Esmie was a consistent member of the Canadian 4x100m relay program that dominated the 1990s. He won golds at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, 1995 and 1997 World Championships, and bronze at the 1993 World Championships. Individually, Esmie won the 60m bronze medal at the 1995 World Indoor Championships and made the 100m semi-final at the 1993 World Championships.

Born in Jamaica, Esmie moved to Sudbury, Ontario at age 11 attending Lasalle Secondary School. By Grade 10, he signed with Nike, as one of the youngest athletes ever. His mother Mavis wanted him to become a medical doctor, which he said he would do if his Olympic dreams didn’t come true. After spending 22 years in Vancouver, British Columbia, Esmie returned to his hometown of Sudbury with his wife and children to look after his ailing mother. Esmie remained involved in sport and high-performance track and speed training to help athletes from all disciplines reach their fitness goals.

As a member of the men’s relay team, Esmie was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004 and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Chuck and Julie Show Guest, Dr Brian Joondeph June 15, 2022
Doctor, MD, MPS, FACS, Ophthalmologist

Brian C. Joondeph completed his training as a retina surgeon in 1990 and since then has worked both in private practice and full-time academic ophthalmology. He practiced in Michigan for ten years before taking his family on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to work and live in Auckland, New Zealand for several years. He has been in Denver for the past 15 years after returning from his academic retina position down under. Denver was a great fit for his family after New Zealand given the opportunity for outdoor adventure and sports.

Dr. Joondeph grew up in northern New Jersey with his entire family in medicine or allied professions, making medical school an easy choice. Ophthalmology provided a high-tech blend of medicine and surgery, with retina further exemplifying these features. There is little in medicine more satisfying than saving or restoring eyesight, arguably the most precious of our senses.

Dr. Joondeph has more than 80 academic publications and is a current and past investigator in multiple clinical trials. He enjoys clinical research as it links scientific inquiry with eventual new treatments he can offer to his patients. He is also an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, helping develop the next generation of ophthalmologists. Dr. Joondeph is widowed and has three adult children.

When not working, he enjoys spending time with his family. His hobbies include golfing, skiing, fitness, and travel. When not in clinic, you will find Dr. J in the mountains or visiting a foreign country
