Doris M. Ellis was born in her Maternal Grandfather’s farmhouse in Surry County, Virginia. She is the youngest of four children born to Lawrence L. Ellis and Grace L. Flowers Ellis. Doris was educated in the public schools of Surry County, where she met and fell in love with Joe Ellis, their relationship began because they both played varsity basketball for Luther P. Jackson High School, they were both Ellis’, and they both wore uniform #24.

Doris received a BS Degree from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, and completed The School of Bank Management at The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia.

After serving the community for almost 35 years, Doris retired from SonaBank, formerly The Bank of Waverly, as Vice President/Branch Manager. Because of her love for the children of her beloved Surry County, Doris began to work as a Substitute Teacher for Surry County Public Schools, and she currently remains in that position.

Doris has three (3) children; Kimberly, Keisha, and Joseph, Jr. (Joey). She also has six (6) grandchildren; Keion, Keionna, Joseph, III (Tre), Keivon, Joelle, and Jaedan.

“Going Out a Champion: The Coach Joe Ellis Story”, the biography of her late husband, Joseph A. Ellis, is Doris’ first published work.

The Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance, a Nevada-based not-for-profit organization has announced it has successfully obtained a CMS-Medicare determination that confirms podiatric physicians will be reimbursed for the eligible services they provide when they participate in Medicare Connected Care, a CMS public education campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of its chronic care management (CCM) program. CCM services are generally non-face-to-face services provided to Medicare beneficiaries who have chronic conditions expected to last at least 12 months, or until the death of the patient. 

According to Lawrence Rubin, DPM, director of the LEAP Alliance, this determination enables the LEAP Alliance to begin forming a nationwide network of solo and small group practice podiatrists who will integrate their services with the services of collaborating primary care and specialty physicians. Together they will provide comprehensive preventive care and treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and peripheral artery disease (PAD). Dr. Rubin says the podiatry network goal is, "to have at least one podiatrist in a Medicare Connected Care provider team that helps save limbs and lives in every community in the country."

Dr. Armstrong is Professor of Surgery with Tenure at the University of Southern California. Dr. Armstrong holds a Master of Science in Tissue Repair and Wound Healing from the University of Wales College of Medicine and a PhD from the University of Manchester College of Medicine, where he was appointed Visiting Professor of Medicine. He is founder and co-Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA). 

Dr. Armstrong has produced more than 650 peer-reviewed research papers in dozens of scholarly medical journals as well as over 110 books or book chapters. He is founding co- Editor of the American Diabetes Association’s Clinical Care of the Diabetic Foot, now entering its fourth edition.

Dr. Armstrong is past Chair of Scientific Sessions for the ADA’s Foot Care Council, and a past member of the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association. In 1986 he was appointed the team physician for the American Powerlifting Association National Team, treating these world class athletes at every national and world championship until 1992.  In 1987 he served as the doctor to the US national team in the first competitions against the Soviet Union USSR.  In 1988 he organized the first sports medicine course in the former Soviet Union USSR at the famed National Institute of Physical Culture and Sports Medicine in Moscow. 

Dr Stoxen won the state title in Armwrestling in Arizona and Nevada.   In 1987 he was appointed the team doctor for all national and world championships for the American Armwrestling Association. Anthony Field or the popular children’s entertainment group, The Wiggles, wrote a book, How I Got My Wiggle Back which was published by Wiley and Harper Collins Publishing.  The book detailed Anthony’s struggles with the chronic pain and clinical depression he struggled with for years until he was treated by Dr Stoxen. At that time Anthony stated he was suicidal and thanked Dr Stoxen for saving his career and his life. 

Dr Stoxen’s interests are in working in materials science, advanced biological/biomedical materials, polymer and metallic biomaterials, materials synthesis for “active” medical, i.e. therapeutic and sports applications.  He recently accepted an invitation to speak at the 2nd International Meet on Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering will be held in Valencia, Spain during April 17-19, 2023.
