In his book "Consciousness Explained," Tufts University philosopher Daniel Dennett calls human consciousness "just about the last surviving mystery." Dr. Antonio Damasio, a neuroscientist from the University of Southern California who has studied the neurological basis of consciousness for years, tells Big Think that being conscious is a "special quality of mind" on a base level, consciousness is the fact of being awake and processing information. "Many species, many creatures on earth that are very likely to have a mind, but are very unlikely to have a consciousness in the sense that you and I have," says Damasio.

We are Consciousness. No matter the religious label or lack of we are all Consciousness. Every rock, person, tree, snake, whatever is Consciousness in some form. We are all Consciousness experiencing, Consciousness evolving out of the primordial ooze.

Our minds control our eyesight. What is happening in the big picture is not always what we can keep track of when we are using focused vision.

So many of us end up in jobs that pay the bills but we feel dissatisfied. Our soul yearns for more. Or we end up at the end of a career saying, 'finally, I can do what I love to do - if I only knew what that is'!

Our histories are filled with 'what ifs'. On our road trip through life we have many options. A turn down that road yields a dead end. A turn down another opens a vista of opportunities. When we're focused in our present circumstances we may not feel like we know what's up ahead. We may assume the choices we're currently making are going to take us some place completely different than where we actually end up.
