Dr Sophia McClennen, author of Is Satire Saving Our Nation?

Written in the wake of 9/11, when pubic dissent was chilled and many comedians and commentators self-censored, McClennen's book analyzed the increasing power of satire in shaping political discourse and public opinion.  Tracing the rise of comedians like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert and the role their shows had in informing the public and offering a counter to the mainstream news media, the book continues to have relevance in the Trump era.

Today, Colbert’s concept of truthiness, where people believe things that feel true even without evidence, has morphed into Trumpiness, an arrogant and blustering disregard of the truth.  Satire, more than any other form of media, has been the only constantly effective source of critique of the Trump era’s bullying attitude toward reality.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dr Sophia McClennen, is the Director of the Center for Global Studies, and Associate Director School of International Affairs.  She also often covers the topics of satire, the media, and the Trump administration in her weekly column of Salon magazine.
