Reading Heidi Beierle's book, Heidi Across America, was fascinating.  I admired her courage, fitness, tenacity, and dedication to so many things.  Our conversation also taught me about new concepts that I had never thought about:  slow travel, Adventure Cycling Association, the Good Roads Movement, how roads were created in America, historic roads, bicycle tourism, scenic roads, and America as a community.

Heidi's life is an adventure, and when she felt stuck, she did something about it.  She hopes to inspire others who feel stuck.  First step, read Heidi's book.  It is available wherever books are sold.  Second step, make one incremental change which will alter your life over time.

Heidi Beierle is the author of the new book, Heidi Across America.

In 2010, Heidi Beierle had just finished her first year of graduate studies in community and regional planning and decided to pedal her bicycle solo from her home on the West Coast across rural America to the Preserving the Historic Road conference in Washington, D.C.

Along the way, Heidi was surprised by the kindness of strangers and the emotional pinch of traveling through Wyoming, where she grew up. Her journey led her through the plains and into the Ozarks, where the heat climbed to agonizing temperatures; every pedal stroke in the heat felt closer to death. By the time she completed the trip, Heidi discovered a newfound compassion for herself and a growing love for her country. Strangers opened their hearts to her, and in turn, she opened her heart to herself.
