Guest Biography:

Dr. Margaret Flowers, Pediatrician, Healthcare Activist

I am a mother of 3 and a pediatrician. I practiced, mostly in Maryland, for about 15 years. I left practice in 2007 to advocate full-time for a single payer health insurance, starting at the state level (I wrote the state health bill, “The Maryland Health Security Act”) and then at the national level as Congressional Fellow for Physicians for a National Health Program in 2009-2010. During the national health reform process, I saw clearly the corporate influence over the legislation. The current federal health law was written by and for the corporations that profit from our current health system. In addition to the traditional approaches of organizing Congressional Briefings, lobbying and testifying, I had my first experience with nonviolent civil resistance when single payer advocates were shut out of the committees. I organized protests and was arrested three times during the health reform process trying to push for reform that was in the interests of patients and health professionals.

After the national reform was signed into law, I traveled the country working with activists on next steps in organizing for single payer/improved Medicare for All. I traveled with the Mad as Hell Doctors too. When people asked how we will eventually wing single payer, I answered that we will see single payer when we win the broader struggle for social, economic and environmental justice. Over that period of travel, it became clearer to me that all who advocate for justice will need to work together in order to have enough strength to make progress. And to be honest, giving people access to health care without addressing the social determinants of health will fail to improve our overall health. One of the greatest drivers of poor health is wealth inequality.

In December, 2010, I had the opportunity to model what I had been saying. I stood with hundreds of others in front of the White House protesting war and 132 of us were arrested.

One of our next projects was a protest against Bank of America in New York City on Tax Day. We joined with 17 different groups to organize this protest and we focused on “people over profits.

I also believe that telling the truth is imperative in this age of propaganda. I am co-host of a radio show, “Clearing the FOG: Speaking truth to expose the Forces of Greed:” which airs on WeAct Radio. I serve on the board of Healthcare-Now.org and am involved in the “Health care is a Human Right” campaign in Maryland. And I am one of the 50 doctors who filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court arguing that the individual mandate which forces people to purchase private insurance is unconstitutional.

I have been interviewed by Bill Moyers and other TV and radio hosts and am published in blogs such as TruthOut.

Guest Occupation: Physician, Endocrinologist, Menopause Health Authority, Doctor of Internal Medicine, Author, Lecturer, Educator
Guest Biography:

Diana Schwarzbein, MD is a board certified physician specializing in endocrinology.  In over twenty years of private practice she has helped thousands of women effectively and safely manage their menopause.  A pioneer and recognized expert in the use of bio-identical hormones for treating menopause, Dr. Schwarzbein is now the country’s leading advocate for changing the way in which menopause is understood and managed by physicians.  She provides the expertise, the experience, and the energy behind Menopause Power – her initiative to educate women to take the lead in bringing about this long needed change.

Having completed her medical degree and residency in internal medicine at The University of Southern California, Dr. Schwarzbein was selected to do a two-year fellowship in endocrinology at USC.  Upon completion of her fellowship, she was chosen to be the head of the Department of Endocrinology at the Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara, CA.  Her acclaimed success in this role led her to establish The Endocrinology Institute of Santa Barbara and later The Schwarzbein Institute through which she has treated thousands of patients with exceptional results.

The publication of her groundbreaking first book, The Schwarzbein Principle, in 1999, established her as an authority in the emerging fields of metabolic health and integrative medicine.  Since then she has been a frequent and favorite lecturer to physicians and other healthcare providers regarding metabolic health, including the management of menopause, diabetes, thyroid, and adrenal health issues.  Along with The Schwarzbein Principle, her subsequent, best-selling books, The Transition and The Program havemade her thinking and practices available to an appreciative worldwide audience.

Dr. Schwarzbein’s calling to become a physician and to adopt a highly scientific, integrative approach to the practice of medicine was born of personal experience.  As a child and adolescent, she encountered medical problems that were misdiagnosed and mistreated.  For her, this experience underscored the need to think holistically, to educate her patients and to enable them to engage as a partner in the management of their health.

Currently Dr. Schwarzbein maintains a limited private practice in Santa Barbara, CA where she lives with her husband and ever-growing family of rescued horses and dogs.  The balance of her professional time is dedicated to educating the public and physicians to adopt more modern thinking and practices based on her clinical successes with thousands of patients over more than two decades.

The Schwarzbein Principle

First articulated in the late 1990s, The Schwarzbein Principle is notable for: (i) its departure from conventional thinking, (ii) its solid grounding in science, (iii) the degree to which it has since been validated by published research and clinical data, and (iv) the extent to which it has been embraced by physicians, other healthcare providers, and the general public.

The Schwarzbein Principle states: The degenerative diseases of aging are not genetic; they are caused by metabolic imbalance.

BIO BELOW FROM: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Grant

Victoria Grant, born in 2000 and living in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, is a young Canadian who in 2012 has become an internet celebrity after her bank critical speech was posted on YouTube by her father, Zane Grant. The speech was held at a conference organized by the Public Banking Institute in Philadelphia. That video, which during the first week was seen by 65,000 people and up to the beginning of september 2012 has been viewed about 700,000 times (in its English version), has also been translations into several languages, such as Spanish, German and Italian. The newspapers which has described the girl and her speech include the Huffington Post and Forbes. She has also been interviewed on RT (Russia Today), the second most watched foreign news channel in the United States after the BBC News, and there described as a "child economist". The debate and media coverage of the speeches have partly focused on the fact that Victoria Grant is so young and it has been questioned whether she really wrote the numbers yourself. But the articles has also, to some extent, been about substance, that is, the banking system. Among the more established monetary reformists who have praised her include Bill Still and Ellen Brown.
Her speech

Have you ever wondered why Canada is in debt? Have you ever wondered why the government forces Canadians to pay so many taxes? Have you ever wondered why the bankers from the largest private banks are becoming wealthier, and the rest of us are not? Have you ever wondered why the gross national debt is over $800 billion dollars? Or why we are spending $160 million dollars a day on the interest of the national debt? That is $60 billion dollars a year! Have you ever wondered who receives the $60 billion dollars? What I have discovered is the banks and the government have colluded to financially enslave the people of Canada.
