Okay. All right. All right. We have a- an email question. We're getting a little bit behind on these email questions. I wanna g- I'm gonna get to a few of those today. It's, uh, from Dan out of Redondo Beach, California. And Dan writes, "On your radio show, could you state your opinion on getting the PSA test for men?" And Dr. Bob, I'll let you go ahead and start.

All right. Well, I've had the opportunity after having treated over 30,000 patients in my practice career to see my fair share of men who were usually over the age of 40 and were having trouble with frequency of urination at night, poor urinary stream, poor, uh, function sexually, and sometimes even some UTIs, urinary tract infections. Uh, and these were men who were suffering from classic prostate problems. By the time they got to me, Dr. Brockman, they had already been to their general-... uh, practitioner, general MD practitioner. The general MD practitioner referred them to a urologist.

They went to the urologist and they had all kinds of different tests that are often necessary, and the conclusion was, "Well, we can put you on these drugs or if it gets bad enough and the drugs don't work down the road, we can always use or perform a surgical procedure to try to, uh, decrease the size of your prostate so that you don't get up at night and frequently urinate and have urinary spillage or frequency of urination and all the other things that go along with prostate-related problems." So of course, they end up on our doorstep looking for a safe and effective science-based alternative. And, uh, I'm here to tell you that we were able to solve most all of them. You only... You're never gonna get 100% when you walk up to the plate, the batter's box.

There's always gonna be a swing and a miss, but at least those people who were thinking outside the box and believing that there are other healing arts and healing techniques aside from pharmaceutical drugs and surgery, they would find their way to our office and offices that offer care like we did. And they were smart to do so because we were able to, uh, extricate them from a very slippery slope associated with prostate procedures and prostate-related drugs. But look, if you're having trouble and nothing conservative works and you've been through the gauntlet of that, there's always more liberal and radical things to do. That would be medical care.

However, with the PSA, if you look back in the scientific literature, even doctors, uh, that have known about this for years have realized that if a man is having trouble with his prostate gland and you intervene on, on some level, whether it be surgical technique or drugs, you may actually make them worse than they were before they got to your office. In fact, many of the medical research studies have shown that when a man at a certain age bracket has prostate problems, it's often better to leave him alone than to intervene because if you start doing, uh, cutting, slicing, dicing, and doing procedures, uh, you may cause the problem to be permanently worse than it was and never able to get better. So what we did with these people is they come in and they have, of course, their PSA, their prostate-specific antigen blood test, which is sort of the holy grail of laboratory findings that doctors use along with symptomatology and examination of the prostate, you do that rectally in a man.

Uh, they use these to justify whatever techniques or treatments that they are going to employ on behalf of the patient to try to help them out. The problem with the PSA test, the prostate-specific antigen test is it's not that accurate. It has a lot of false positives associated with it. In other words, you can have a man come into an office and have that test done and it could be, like, wrong. It could be high and it may be a false positive. Could be low and y- you get different numbers on it. So relying on that blood test singularly is not a good idea. But it's justification for the doctor to do something because that way they get paid for it. Uh, the insurance company says, "Oh, okay, you've done the PSA test, it's high. You've done the examination. Okay, if y- you think you're feeling it even though you can only feel a fourth of the prostate with a digital electro, uh, rectal exam, only, uh, a fourth of it, so you're not feeling the whole, uh, process.

You're just sort of, like, in the dark a little bit." And, of course, they have symptoms. So with a man with a PSA, we never say to them, "Look, go... Okay, uh, go get the procedure done." What we tell them to do is go have a sonogram performed, which is a ultrasound of the prostate to see the size of the prostate, which normally is about the size of a small walnut normally. Once you get a baseline on the size of that man's prostate with a sonogram, an actual picture of it just like a baby, uh, and- and, uh, it... The sonogram's just like a, a, a pregnant mother having an ultrasound to see what's going on with the baby, which we don't recommend either, but in this case, it's recommended for men because it, you know, it- it gives you the size and then you can do something and then go back, Dr. Brotman, and check it and see if it's gone down or it's the same or it went up so you know what your course of care is going to be. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen.

All right, we were answering Dan's question about a slightly elevated PSA and, uh, and I wanna say, it doesn't automatically mean cancer, as Dr. Bob was explaining. I, uh, I also wanna say, in fact, lots of men have mild elevation simply from aging, or it can be from vigorous activity, and it can even be from sexual activity right before a test. On, on one hand, some men with prostate cancer have normal PSA readings. Uh, so that's, that's why we need to see PSA as, as part of a, of a bigger picture and not the whole painting. So Dr.

... uh, you're sitting all day long. You shouldn't sit more than 20 minutes at a time without getting up and moving around, even if it's 10 steps, because they have a desk job all day long, so they sit all day long. Next, we tell that man, "If you are consuming alcohol, dairy products, smoking cigarettes, or using a lot of caffeine, and you're on the standard American diet, you will have prostate problems. It's not a matter of if, but when, th- and it'll depend on how bad it is, depending on your consumption." So they're not willing to give up, uh, the alcohol, the cheese, the ice cream, the Haagen-Daaz, the dairy foods, which are the worst offenders. They cause swelling in the prostate gland. We know this for a fact, because when you take those men off of those products, you get them away from it, suddenly, they're sleeping through the night like babies. So we, we get them on that lifestyle tweak, and then we give them an exercise which everybody can do: walking.

Walking is the exercise for prostate problem. We have them walk one to three miles a day, which is the equivalent of a man massaging his prostate gland. There is, by the way, a procedure. You can actually do that, self-prostate massage. All urologists know how to do it, and they used to teach their patients how to do it, uh, right in their offices, but they quit doing that because there's no money in it, so they'd rather do the surgical procedure and have a big check show up. Uh, I digress again. So, uh, the man needs to be walking. He needs to be taking 50 milligrams of zinc per day, because usually a man with a prostate problem has a zinc deficiency. We also put them on herbal DHT or herbal dihydrotestosterone inhibitors which are, w- which mimic the drug, the pharmaceutical drugs that they give out, Proscar and all these different other drugs that have side effects, including impotence and lack of sexual, uh, desire and everything else.

We put them on beta-sitosterol, which is an herbal, uh, supplement. You can get it in any health food store. It has no adverse side effects. Works unbelievably well. And that in combination with zinc, African pygeum, which is another herb, over time that man's prostate will get better and his frequency of urination at night will go way down. He may not even get up at all, and problem solved. But most men, as you well know, Dr. Brockman, they think, "Well, okay, my, my, my doctor is the end-all of, of information in the healthcare universe, so whatever my doctor says, I'm gonna go with it." Unfortunately, that is a very risky proposition, because as doctors, the more we know, the more we realize we don't know. Uh, if you, if you're really gonna be honest as a doctor, you're gonna say, "Look, I think this is not a life-threatening situation to have a man with a prostate problem, especially if it's benign, and most of them are. And even if it wasn't, the course of care would be the same.

Uh, let's at least try a three-month to six-month course of conservative care before we start chopping and channeling and cutting, slicing, and dicing on this man, because if we do and we mess him up, which many of them are, he'll be in diapers the rest of his life and wished he'd never walked into my office." But doctors will be doctors. It's sort of like a carpenter. You put a carp- uh, you know, a hammer in a carpenter's hand, and everything's a nail. That's what they do. They're businessmen and women. And so a conservative first in non-life-threatening situations, which is what we do with men with, uh, bloated prostate glands, give them three to six months' lifestyle, uh, changes, supplementation, um, th- yeah, self-prostate massage, get them on the right diet, and the vast majority, I'd say like 95%, are going to get well without any pharmaceutical drugs, so without any medical intervention.

That other 5%, usually they're so chronic, they've been there so long, now they're recalcitrant. The prostate gland is, is hardened, everything's hardened, and they may require a, sort of a Hail Mary, if you will, surgical procedure in order to stop them from urinating at night. But there again, they risk being in diapers the rest of their life, so they have to make that decision

Yeah. And, and Dr. Bob, uh, you know, this is a great question. Eh, so I want, I want men to always remember that over-testing can lead to over-treatment, so, so balance awareness like what you were- been discussing, that's, that's where it needs to happen. We've, uh, swung from, uh, don't test at all to test everyone annually, but the truth is as anything, it usually lives in the middle. The, the goal is that early detection, not a automatic intervention, and, and what Dr. Bob was saying from a natural health standpoint, prevention still wins. Hi, Heidi. And thank you for bringing that up, because it's, uh, one of those, those things that we're getting to the, a modern crossroads in health. Are the new nutrition by app tools actually helping us get healthier, or are they just making us digitally dependent to know what's good, uh, good for our plate or dinner? Now, for anyone that's unfamiliar, Yuka, spelled U- uh, Y-U-K-A, it's a food scanning app. You scan a barcode, uh, at the, at the grocery store, and it instantly scores the product on a nutritional quality, and, uh, it also tells you about the additives, and it flags things like excess sugar, salt, or, uh, processed ingredients. So on, on paper that's fantastic. It helps people make quick visual decisions in the grocery aisle without needing a nutrition degree. But here's what I remind my patients and listeners alike. Algorithms, they can't taste your food, or read your lab work, or know your individual needs.

They use standardized databases and incredi- ingredient lists, which means context matters. For instance, Yuka might red flag an organic olive oil for its caloric, uh, count, while it might give a high score to a synthetic diet yogurt that's full of gums and fake sweeteners. Uh, so if you see the problem here, uh, it's sometimes that algorithm, it knows numbers, but not actual nutrition. And, and that said, the app, uh, it does have some major upsides. It raises awareness, it gets people looking at ingredients, and it empowers, uh, consumers, especially those that are just starting their label reading journey. And, uh, so that's, that's huge progress. A decade ago, nobody even cared what, uh, what some of these additives might look like, and now, now people are scanning to avoid them. That's what I call nutritional literacy in action. Uh, so if you want my take, I say use Yuka, uh, again that's spelled Y-U-K-A, as a compass, but not as the, the captain of the ship.

Let it guide you towards cleaner, less processed food, but use your own critical thinking to interpret the, the results. Vaughn, Beaumont, Texas. Yeah, you were speaking about the, um, incident about cancer after con- after stopping a drug intake. Well, that must be a relative number rather than an absolute number. Um, look at the number of people who are on long term drugs. Um, I mean, that should raise the cancer rate very, very high in itself. And then when they could, uh, discontinue it, um, that should be also a very, very high rate of cancer based upon the numbers that you, uh, mentioned. And, um, anyway, uh, when they discontinue the, uh, the drugs, then there is a continuance of something that will cause the cancer, that's glyphosate. So there's no mention about anything like that. No, I think somebody's just trying to muddy the waters to get you to look elsewhere instead of, uh, at other, you know, things like gy- glyphosate. But anyway, um, yeah, thank you.

Yeah, thanks, Scott. Good to hear your voice again. Yes, glyphosate is a big problem, but it's not anything new. Been around for what, 75 years or something? They've been using this herbicide to interfere with the reproductive cycle of insects and things that would eat the crops and farmers would have less yield and so on and so forth. So yeah, we should be conscious and conscientious about what we put on our food. Uh, there are more toxins in the environment today than there ever has been before. And the reason is because they can. (laughs) It's, it's that's the problem. We've allowed it to happen. USDA, FDA, all the, you know, the letters, three-letter organizations, four-letter organizations, they all are implicated in it, and many of them have had lots of contributions and payoffs from big agro, meaning that if these big agricultural companies can increase their profitability by virtue of using glyphosate, they're gonna do it if they're allowed to do it.

But anything that kills bugs, whether it be insects or vermin or anything, can also impact human beings, which means when we consume glyphosate, that's just one thing. Uh, along with all the thousands and thousands of other chemicals, petrochemicals, which this is, in the environment, it adds up. Our body can only take so much of a toxic burden before something finally breaks. So yes, I'm glad you brought it up. I mean, we can parse, you know, hairs here between absolute and this, that, and the other thing, but the reality is being more conscious about our food supply and what we're getting into is a really good thing. And the best way to hedge that is to make sure you know what you're putting in your mouth. Always, when you can, try to purchase and consume organic products. Today, the constraints of that are, especially from the regulatory standpoint, are good because in order for a company for a product to say it's organic, they have to go through some rigid standards.

And over a thousand published scientific studies, uh, articles have shown that aged garlic extract is effective in helping the vascular system, over a thousand. Again, one of the key components of aged garlic extract, um, is that it helps to incr- improve the endothelial lining of the blood vessels, which is where, this is where nutrients come and go, but also toxins get eliminated. So the, so the body's, its production of nitric oxide, we know it declines with, with age, and I think the, the research is showing up to, uh, a loss of up to 75% by age, uh, age 70. Is that, is that what you're seeing in, in practice as well? Uh, uh, like, when we start to do this, is it like, like, "Hey, um, how do we slow this down?" And then now we got, now we got a step that we can do that.

And that improves cognitive function in people, uh, even in the pre-hypertension, uh, or hypertensive, uh, state. This week's product recall of the week involves a significantly high safety concern that could literally go up in smoke in the- if ignored. It's Johnson Health Technology, it's expanding its recall of Matrix Retail and Vision treadmills because of defect in the power cord that could, uh, cause it to loosen from the power socket, creating a potential fire hazard.
