Popp Talk with Mary Jane Popp
Alex Urbina and Dr Alan Lycka - Mastering Energy Alchemy and the Blueprint for a Fantastic Life
This episode of Pop Talk features a deep dive into the unseen forces affecting human vitality and the strategic mindset required to achieve professional authority. Host Mary Jane Pop engages with shamanic practitioner Alex Urbina and world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Alan Lycka to explore how energy clearing and personal resilience can transform one's life.
The Science of Energy Alchemy and Spiritual Detox
Shamanic practitioner Alex Urbina explains that humans are energetic beings susceptible to "psychic attacks"—negative frequencies sent through conscious or unconscious intent, often manifesting as unexplained exhaustion, headaches, or insomnia. A critical component of this energetic health is the management of "energetic cords," which are connections formed during relationships. If these cords are not intentionally severed after a relationship ends, they can continue to drain an individual's life force. Urbina emphasizes that "emotional residue"—suppressed emotions like grief or anger—acts as a toxin within the energy field. If left unaddressed, this residue can eventually manifest as physical illness, including chronic fatigue and disease.
To combat these influences, Urbina advocates for the power of intention and the use of elemental transmuters like fire and water. He describes "lightworkers" as individuals who serve humanity by embodying high-frequency love and light, which naturally dissolves lower-frequency negative energies. The goal of energy alchemy is to transmute fear and negativity back into love, allowing the physical body to recalibrate and heal itself.
Authority, Resilience, and the "Golden Pearls" of Life
Dr. Alan Lycka provides a perspective on professional and personal mastery, rooted in his own experience of overcoming a terminal misdiagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), which was later correctly identified as Chronic Lyme disease. He argues that "authority is the new currency," asserting that true experts do not wait to be discovered but position themselves through visibility and authorship. According to Lycka, writing a book is a primary requirement for anyone seeking to "rule their game" and establish undeniable credibility in their field.
Central to Lycka’s philosophy are the "13 Golden Pearls," metaphorical wisdom gained through hardship. He highlights love and resilience as the most vital pearls, noting that just as an oyster creates a pearl from an irritating grain of sand, humans can transform life's "curveballs" into something rare and beautiful. He encourages individuals to embrace their uniqueness and avoid being "boring," as visibility is a form of service that allows one to offer solutions to others' problems.
This discussion underscores a holistic approach to success, blending the spiritual necessity of energetic maintenance with the practical demands of professional authority. Whether through cutting energetic cords or building a legacy through authorship, the core message remains: transformation begins with the intentional decision to transmute life's challenges into power and purpose.

We'll find out what that means.
[01:41] Speaker 2: Well, shamanic practitioner and energy alchemist Alex Urbina looks at how unseen energetic influences like psychic attacks, emotional residue, and spiritual imbalances can actually cause burnout, anxiety, and chronic fatigue. And boy, I- I'm reading some articles on chronic fatigue that it's in- unbelievable these days. Well, Alex is a shamanic practitioner, transformative healer, and he can actually change a lot of things for us, hopefully. Nice to have you with us, Alan- Alex.
[02:22] Speaker 3: I'm honored to be here. Thank you for having me.
[02:24] Speaker 2: You betcha. Okay, uh, the one th- ki- thing that jumped out and grabbed my face, it says things like "psychic attacks." What the heck is a psychic attack, and how do I fight it off?
[02:36] Speaker 3: (laughs) Yeah, a psychic attack is, um, energy that gets sent to s- to you from somebody who has a very strong intention, whether it's unconscious or conscious, and whether it's int- it's intentional or not. You gotta remember that we're all energetic beings first, and that's our power. And some people, if they're angry at you, or, uh, they're disappointed at you, or if they're let down, they could be sending negative energy your way just by a thought, just by having, um, an unresolved emotion. And if they're transmitting or broadcasting that frequency tor- towards you, um, that frequency wave affects your energy field, it affects your thoughts, it affects your sleep. Um, and then, uh, if you're having a, uh, somebody who's strong i- with that intent, again, whether it's intentional or not or conscious or not, it still affects us. And so, it's considered a psychic attack.
[03:37] Speaker 3: Um-
[03:38] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[03:38] Speaker 3: ... not necessarily, most people don't do it on purpose, but it's still an energy that affects and disrupts our energy field and it, it disrupts and affects how we're feeling.
[03:49] Speaker 2: How do I know it's a psychic attack?
[03:53] Speaker 3: A lot of us, we, we don't know. That's why we have conversations like this. That's why you do what you do and hold a space for people like me to come in and share, w- uh, and, and talk a little bit about the unseen world and ex- and expose more about what's going on behind the scenes. You know, before I became a, a shamanic practitioner and learned about energy, I had no clue of maybe three-fourths of w- what I've been discovering-
[04:19] Speaker 2: Hmm.
[04:20] Speaker 3: ... and realizing and being able to shift or change. And, um, you know, just like, like you and me and everyone else that has a specific purpose, we get excited to want to share the things that we've learned, the things that we've transformed or evolved from. And so, this is kind of where I'm at. I want to let everybody know that there are unseen forces that show up in our energy field that are affecting us, and we might not even be aware of it.
[04:48] Speaker 2: Wow. Are there any warning signs that, you know, something's getting into our energy field, or, you know, why we're feeling this-
[04:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of times-
[04:57] Speaker 2: ... yeah?
[04:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of times, you know, when you're feeling exhausted for no reason, like you got a great night's sleep and all of a sudden, you know, specific time of the day, you just feel drained or you feel like, uh, you have a headache, and you just un- it's unexplained, and it keeps showing up the same way, the same pattern, that's, you know, a warning sign telling you, "Hey, there could, you could be, um, being drained by, by somebody, um, that's really close to you in your inner circle or maybe a past relationship." There's another thing that, that's called energetic cords. And, uh, in the energy field w- when we're in relationships with people, we create an energetic connection. We call them energy cords. And if we don't in- intentionally cut those cords when we're done with that relationship or we ch- uh, move from one relationship to another, if we don't cut those cords, we're still connected to those people.
[05:50] Speaker 3: So sometimes, when people are very needy of us or don't, aren't getting the attention they're used to from us, they could be draining energy from us and we're totally unaware of it. So there's n- there's multiple things that are going on that could be stealing energy from us or life force.... that, uh, is privy for us to be aware of those things.
[06:09] Speaker 2: You know, it's really interesting, Alex, because, um, I happen to be Romanian by descent and, uh, only second generation born here. And so a lot of the traditions that they used to have in Romania, um, were things like e- and I... This may sound really weird, but it, I really believe that it's possible that there's the evil eye. Someone can... And maybe this has to do with energy fields. They're sending you bad vibes, bad energy, and they may or may not know it. Uh, could it be something like that? Because they used to have a thing on how do you fight the, the, the evil eye and all that kind of thing. Uh, but, you know, a lot of the old stuff that people used to do, you know, 100 years ago coming to fruition that, that maybe it all has to do with this kind of thing and energy and passing energy, 'cause we are all energy. Most of us, y- y- y- even when we pass over, energy cannot be created or destroyed, right?
[07:10] Speaker 3: Absolutely. And you're right about the evil eye. The evil eye is just a different name of calling, you know, a psychic attack or energy cords. It, again, it goes to, uh, that we're all energetic beings and whether we're aware of it or not, or intentional or not, we can be sending or broadcasting or projecting negative energy towards somebody that affects them, especially if they're very sensitive of they're an empath. We're sending that to them and, um, it, it's beneficial for us to know that we're broad- could be broadcasting out, you know, totally unaware, but also we could be receiving it, uh, or, or being drained from it on both sides. So, yeah, the evil eye back in those times, that's what the term that they gave it, but it's the same thing.
[07:59] Speaker 3: It's-
[08:00] Speaker 2: Huh.
[08:00] Speaker 3: ... it's having somebody who, uh, again, is, is angry or upset or disappointed, uh, or needy, you know, all those, uh, lower emotions that people hold onto, if they still have that energetic cord and that connection to you, it's showing up in your field. And how it can manifest is maybe, again, you're tired, you're exhausted, you can't sleep at night, you have insomnia, you have stress, anxiety, or even you have bad luck, you know? It could be getting in the way of your natural flow, uh, of your life folding out for you in a positive way, and it could just be disrupting that. So, it's something to really be aware of and if your... A- based on your timeline, if it's something you're supposed to be, uh, learning or understanding or actually remembering, you will. It'll, it'll ring, uh, uh, in your, in your head like a little bell.
[08:50] Speaker 2: Mm.
[08:50] Speaker 3: And you'll start to do some research on it and you'll just learn how to discover more of it so you can be, you know, highly attuned to those types of things.
[08:58] Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting (laughs) because they used to have... And I, I, obviously my mother knew about it, but my grandmother knew about it and that it goes back generations (laughs) with this thing. And they used to have a way to fight that evil eye, but it wasn't very nice. You know, what they wished on that person (laughs) was not a good thing. But that's the only way they knew how to fight it, you know?
[09:21] Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that, you know, in different cultures at different times, they did the best they could with, with what they knew. And so a lot of us have this warrior mentality of, "I have to fight."
[09:34] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[09:35] Speaker 3: "I have to fight back towards something that's coming at me." And the real way to, to, uh, address those types of issues is to counter it with love. Love is the most powerful energy in the universe, and, uh, light and love at a high frequency can just transmute it. It can dissolve it. If you send all that stuff to the light or to God or to whatever higher power you believe in, whatever higher frequency, um, that supports you, um, and even with your own sovereignty, you can just make commands. You can just command that, "I am sovereign and nobody has the right to project any negative towards me." This is all about you remembering that you are divine, you are sovereign, and so a lot of this process is remembering that and then, and then kind of standing in that. When you stand in that, your, your intention becomes more powerful than, than any type of energy, um, non-beneficial energy that's being sent to you. Um, yeah, when I was younger, I remember, 'cause I'm Latino, right?
[10:36] Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
[10:36] Speaker 3: I'm Hispanic. And my, my auntie, they were all, I guess you would call them, back, back then they called them cuyanderos. They were a shaman, but in the fe- female sense.
[10:46] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[10:47] Speaker 3: They used to get, they used to get an egg, uh, and rub the egg around your body, and with their intention, they would clear that energy or that evil eye off of you into the egg, and then they would, um, the egg, they would crack it and get, just to get rid of it. And that was how they cleared back then.
[11:04] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[11:04] Speaker 3: I wanna say the '70s maybe, '60s and '70s.
[11:07] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:07] Speaker 3: And a little bit into the '80s. But as we're evolving, and, and shamans and healers are, uh, evolving, we're starting to remember the higher ways of releasing and transmuting these types of energies.
[11:19] Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting that you (laughs) say that because they... The way that they would fight the evil eye, and I don't remember the whole, uh, you know, situation that they got into, but they would take, uh, a glass of water. Now, I know this sounds really weird, but hey, I don't feel so weird now telling you, like, you know, you told me about the egg. Um, they would take, you know, the, uh, wooden matches and they would light the match and throw it in the water, and I think it was seven. You had to throw, put seven in the water. However many would go down to the bottom, because these would float. These little, those wood, light wood, they would float. Uh, but if one or two or three or whatever, uh, would flo- go down to the bottom, that's how many times you were hit by this evil eye.
[12:08] Speaker 2: And then they'd have a-
[12:09] Speaker 3: I love-
[12:10] Speaker 2: And then-
[12:10] Speaker 3: I absolutely love this story. And, and I'll tell you why.
[12:13] Speaker 2: Why?
[12:14] Speaker 3: A- as a shaman-One of the most powerful elements that we use to transmute is fire. Fire is a transmuting energy.
[12:22] Speaker 2: Huh.
[12:23] Speaker 3: So every time they light that match, that fire is transmuting that energy. Um, it's clearing it from them. So every time they do that and they throw that into the... And water is a clearing element too. So water, fire, wind, earth, it's, they're all trans- transmuters, and they're gifts for us. You can always clear, clean, cleanse your energy with the earth. Um, you don't necessarily even need a healer or a shaman if your intention's strong enough.
[12:50] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[12:50] Speaker 3: Sometimes your intention's not strong enough, that's why you partner up with a healer. But that story is beautiful because what they were doing was they were lighting that match and that flame, that fire, was transmuting. And so they did it seven times. It took seven fire transmutations for finally for it to be cleared. And then it would sh- And then based on results, that match would float down to the bottom as a signal to let you know, okay, you're fully cleared now.
[13:15] Speaker 2: I'll be darn... Yeah, 'cause and my brother knew how to do it, uh, 'cause he-
[13:18] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[13:18] Speaker 2: ... was a little older than me. And, uh-
[13:21] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[13:21] Speaker 2: ... it actually, it actually... I know this sounds weird, but it worked. Uh-
[13:25] Speaker 3: Absolutely it worked-
[13:26] Speaker 2: You know-
[13:26] Speaker 3: ... because of your intention.
[13:27] Speaker 2: Um, he-
[13:29] Speaker 3: If-
[13:29] Speaker 2: We did this one... I got really feeling sick one time and for no reason. All of a sudden I just felt sick, um, nauseous, you know, the whole nine yards, headache and everything. And he said, you know, "Let's, let's see if it's the evil eye." And he did this and so many went down and then he had a prayer that had to be said. I don't... I did not know about it. Um, and it was sending back that negative energy to the (laughs) person who sent it to you, in a bad way. Um, but it worked. Within less than like half an hour or less, I was perfectly fine. Isn't that amazing?
[14:07] Speaker 2: That they-
[14:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, it is truly amazing.
[14:09] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:09] Speaker 3: And it goes to show you that that's how powerful our intention is. And so for you, that needed your brother to stand in and, and anchor his love for you and his... the power of his intention for you to get better, it was kind of like you were piggyback on... pa- piggybacking on him, and then he was doing it for you. That's u- That's what healers do. They stand in for the people that don't have that higher frequency yet, and they, they serve in that way. They use their intention for you, with you, and then as a partnership you guys can clear that energy.
[14:40] Speaker 2: Amazing. Yeah, it just... Some of those things started coming back to me, you know, that I was raised in that, you know, and it's just like, uh, yeah. And, and doggone it, it worked, you know? (laughs)
[14:50] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[14:51] Speaker 2: That's the main thing. Now, you say we have something called emotional residue. What do you mean?
[14:59] Speaker 3: Yeah, so emotional residue, just imagine you have like a tank in your energy body that holds all your emotions.
[15:06] Speaker 2: Okay.
[15:07] Speaker 3: And every time you go through a human experience and you don't feel fully whatever experience that is, let's say grief, and you only experience half of it, well, half of it's stuck still in there. And so there's emotional residue that gets stuck in an energy pocket in your energy body, in your energy field. And the more that you keep, uh, continuing to hold on to energies and not have the courage to fully feel them, to fully express them so they run through you, they get stuck in that, that energy, uh, bo- box or bubble or tank, and eventually, uh, suppressed emotional residue when it gets so thick and so heavy, they start to form, uh, cancers and sickness, illness, disease in the physical body. So everything that you're experiencing negative health-wise in your physical body, the root cause, the source is, is almost always energetic.
[16:08] Speaker 2: So how do I get rid of it?
[16:11] Speaker 3: You have to... You have to identify... You have to go to someone that can help you identify what the root cause is.
[16:16] Speaker 2: Oh.
[16:16] Speaker 3: And once they do that, they'll explain it to you, and then once they explain it to you, you have to, um, resonate with it and say, "Okay, this is..." And then decide that you're no longer willing to suffer anymore or to go through whatever traumas that you're continuing to go through, and then from that point, you have to be willing to, to transmute, release, and let go of all of that baggage.
[16:39] Speaker 2: Got it.
[16:40] Speaker 3: Some- Some- Sometimes you might even have to be willing to have the courage to, to continue to feel some of it.
[16:45] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Now you, they... You're also a lightworker. I... That's one... I've, I've done a lot of interviews over the years, (laughs) but I've never heard about a person who's a lightworker. What does that mean?
[16:57] Speaker 3: A lightworker is just a term that they give to people that, uh, remember that they came here on this planet, in this lifetime, to be in service and to bring their, their light and their love to the world, to embody it and also practice it, to model it, to be it so that other people can see it as, uh, something that mirrors them. You know, when, when you see lightworkers being in service and, and, um, embodying those higher qualities and, um, you know, being more loving and being more patient and more kind and, and showing up in that way, it reminds other people that they too are that, they too are the light, they too are that love, that God frequency. So lightworkers are somebody that have decided they, they came here to, to shine that light for the rest of humanity.
[17:53] Speaker 2: Wow. Okay. So can you transform negative energies into positive power?
[18:01] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's... That... One of my gifts is, um, as an energy alchemist, with my intention and my spirit guides or my spirit team, um, collectively we transmute negative energies from people's energy fields and we transform them back into love.
[18:17] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[18:18] Speaker 3: And once we do that, then the physical body has no other choice, uh, other than to start readjusting, recalibrating, and healing itself. To me, healing is all about acknowledging that there's negative energy still stuck in the energy body. Um, being a- being... Instead of resisting it, uh, being willing to transmute it back into love. Once you transmute, uh, energy from fear back into love or negative into positive, then the body starts healing itself. You made a statement earlier about the universal law of energy, and that is that God created energy and energy cannot be, uh, created or destroyed, but it can be transmuted and transformed.
[19:02] Speaker 2: Trans- yeah.
[19:03] Speaker 3: And that's what an energy alchemist does.
[19:05] Speaker 2: That... I've, I've argued with, uh, people on the air who are, like, research scientists, and they'll say, "Well, you can't prove that there's something on the other side. You can't prove that there is a God or anything." I said, "Well, I can prove one thing, that we are made of energy." I said, "Can you fight that?" And they said no.
[19:22] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[19:23] Speaker 2: And they... I said, "Well, what's the definition of energy?" And they said, "Well, you can't..." The thing that we just talked about, "You can't create it or destroy it, but it, it can change form, but it goes on." I said, "Well, you know, I remember in Catholic school," little Catholic girl, "uh, in my catechism, it def- defined God as always was and always will be. Isn't that the same thing?" You don't... Y- it, it, it just... It's always there. It never cha-... It will change, maybe form or, you know, what we see or do, but it's not gone away. It never goes away.
[19:58] Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Go- God is pure existence, meaning that it... If it exists, it cannot not exist. So, uh, it's, it's, uh, it's one massive energy ball of existence, and each one of us are a piece of that. So imagine God being this massive ball of existence, which is pure energy, and then it splits itself up into billions of pieces, uh, and we'll call those pieces souls, uh, that get the opportunity to come to Earth and experience our experiences, so we can remember who we are again.
[20:35] Speaker 2: Yeah. It, it's interesting because usually when I would give them that definition (laughs) and, and fight back into saying that, you know-
[20:42] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[20:42] Speaker 2: ... I believe that there's a... They wouldn't... They had no answer. They had no answer, and there is no answer.
[20:49] Speaker 3: Yeah. (laughs)
[20:49] Speaker 2: Th- th- it's the truth. I'm... I was speaking truth.
[20:52] Speaker 3: Yeah. And, and, and we're all on our... you know, we're all on our own journey. They're on their journey too. And, and obviously they, um, they were called to your program to, to be reminded of that. It's a matter of... Remembrance is chosen, so we have to be ready for it, and when we hear it, when we resonate with it, it, it feels like, "Oh my God, this... It feels so clean. What she was saying, what he was saying feels so clean."
[21:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:17] Speaker 3: That's how you know it's truth, because the, the truth is just the truth.
[21:22] Speaker 2: That's right. Can't fight truth. Well, you can, but (laughs) it won't do you any good.
[21:27] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[21:27] Speaker 2: Uh-
[21:27] Speaker 3: You can resist it.
[21:29] Speaker 2: Yeah. (laughs)
[21:29] Speaker 3: You can resist it and repackage it, but it's still the truth.
[21:32] Speaker 2: Yeah. Are we... Or is anyone ever born negative or in negative, or do we create that as we get older?
[21:44] Speaker 3: I believe when we come here, when we're born, we're born purely magnificent. We're the closest to source or God energy in that moment of birth. Um, however, once we start to have experiences, um, then we start to make up beliefs, right? Like, um, "I shouldn't do this, or shouldn't do that." Um, and we start creating these limiting beliefs about ourselves because we forgot that we, that we are the source, that we are the light, that we are God. And that's all a perfect design of, of the whole process of spiritual beings coming onto Earth. Could you imagine if we were spiritual beings in a human body and we remembered fully who we were? We wouldn't be able to experience anything.
[22:31] Speaker 2: Oh.
[22:32] Speaker 3: So what's the point? So the reason why we come here is to have experiences, to experience ourselves as loving, to experience ourself as, uh, forgiving. In order for you to forgive someone, you have to be hurt. In order for you to forgive somebody and experience yourself as a forgiver, you have to have been taken advantage of or hurt or... So you gotta remember, we're in that world of, uh, polarity. So we have to go through those experiences on the negative side to be able to have an opportunity to experience ourself in the positive experience.
[23:05] Speaker 2: Well, we sure have a lot of negative stuff going on these days. (laughs)
[23:10] Speaker 3: (laughs)
[23:10] Speaker 2: So how do you... Uh, uh, you know, do you try and send out the... your shamanic practitioner information in, through love? Because, man, it's hard to love a few of the things that are going on right now. (laughs)
[23:26] Speaker 3: Yeah. So I'm... I mean, I'm at a stage now where I'm just practicing more to just embody love, to be love more and more, and I don't necessarily need to send anything out. If you're, if you're just being... The more you're being love or becoming love, you're, you're a broadcast, you're a signal, so it's just emanating from you.
[23:46] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[23:47] Speaker 3: And so I don't really... uh, you know, I got past the stage of trying to be loving or sending my love intentionally. You gotta go through those stages. Before I could just be love and emanate it, I went through those stages of directing my love, sending my love, praying, sending my prayers that way. Now it's just more of like, um, for me, just kind of, you know, just broadcasting it out.
[24:13] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[24:13] Speaker 3: And whoever's ready to receive the love, to receive the message, to feel it, to remember it, they will. And, uh, and those that aren't ready, they won't, and-There's nothing I can do about that. That's the-
[24:25] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's their problem, right?
[24:26] Speaker 3: ... The greatest distinction in the, in the planet is there's nothing outside of me that I have control of, over.
[24:32] Speaker 2: Got it. Do you have a website?
[24:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's alexurbina.com.
[24:39] Speaker 2: Okay.
[24:39] Speaker 3: Uh, Urbina spelled U-R-B as in boy-I-N-A. That's the starting point usually if you wanna get in touch with me.
[24:45] Speaker 2: Okay, terrific. You don't have any books or anything out, do you?
[24:49] Speaker 3: I do, actually. I wrote a book about maybe eight or 10 years ago. It's called, um, The Conscio- the... I'm sorry, The, The Inspirational Parent. And, um, it's really all of my, uh, experiences from being, uh, a parent that was unconscious and transitioning into a conscious parent, and I share all that wisdom in that book. But currently, right now, I'm in the process of, process of channeling a book, uh, from a very higher consciousness, um, they're called, uh, The Light Council or The Council of Light, and they're, uh, coming through some very powerful, um, messages and we're in the process right now of writing that book.
[25:37] Speaker 2: Oh, okay. How, how long is it gonna... You gotta come back and give us more information on the book when it's done.
[25:42] Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure. Uh, I think the goal is gonna be in December, um...
[25:47] Speaker 2: Okay.
[25:48] Speaker 3: And, uh, right in the middle of December, we're trying to hit.
[25:51] Speaker 2: Will you keep touch?
[25:53] Speaker 3: Absolutely.
[25:54] Speaker 2: You know, let me know because... Hey, I always look at it this way. I try to share as much good information as I possibly can so people can survive. Uh, you know-
[26:02] Speaker 3: Well, you're doing an amazing job. You, you are a lightworker yourself. And so, I'm grateful to, to share this platform with you and to, to share this moment with you, so thank you so much for allowing me to be in contribution in any way that I was able to today.
[26:16] Speaker 2: You were super. I really appreciate it. And you gotta come back then-
[26:20] Speaker 3: Appreciate you too.
[26:20] Speaker 2: ... as soon as the book is done, okay?
[26:22] Speaker 3: I will. Sounds good.
[26:23] Speaker 2: Terrific. Thank you, Alex.
[26:25] Speaker 3: Many blessings to you guys.
[26:26] Speaker 2: And to you too. And again, all you have to do is to go to alexurbina, and that's U-R-B-I-A... I'm sorry, A-U-R-B-I-N-A, so it's alexurbina.com. Yep, we need a lot of that positive light and, you know, I guess we gotta keep sending it out even though sometimes we think, "Where did it go?" (laughs) "'Cause I'm not sure I did anything." But you know what? I think we can do a lot more than what we truly believe.

[33:18] Speaker 2: Boy, I love Lacy J. Dalton. She always has stories and, you know, issues... really wonderful songs about what we live and what we live every single day. So let me ask you a question. How would you like to have the secrets of living a fantastic life? If you say no, then I, I don't want to talk to you. But if you say yes, (laughs) I've got the perfect person for it. Dr. Alan Laika found the way and wants to share them with us in his book called The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life. And his latest book is called Rule The Game. It's a blueprint for those who are ready to take over, leave a legacy, and rule their game. Now, Dr. Laika is acknowledged as one of the leading cosmetic dermatologists in the world. He helped develop new technologies, but his world changed when he was diagnosed with ALS. If you're not familiar, that's what they used to call Lou Gehrig's disease, back in 2003. Dr. Laika, thank you so much for taking the time to be with us today.
[34:30] Speaker 11: Thank you so much for having me. It's my pleasure to be here.
[34:35] Speaker 2: Now, I gotta... I'm gonna ask a very blunt question here. Lou Gehrig's disease was a death sentence. 2003, you're still alive. That's amazing.
[34:49] Speaker 11: Well, you know, sometimes doctors are not right.
[34:53] Speaker 2: Oh.
[34:53] Speaker 11: And even though they could adamantly say a person has this, sometimes one disease looks like another.
[35:02] Speaker 2: Oh.
[35:02] Speaker 11: And that is the sad thing about medicine as it is. You know, medicine presents as symptom. It doesn't present as a disease, so it takes doctors to figure it out. And, you know, that is the wonder of medicine. That's why you can only practice medicine. You can't do medicine.
[35:27] Speaker 2: Ah. Okay. All right then, thank you, 'cause I thought, "Lou Gehrig's disease in 2003 and the man is still kicking." I, I thought, "What magic is he using?" (laughs) Uh...
[35:40] Speaker 11: Well, the magic is I didn't give up. You know, when I was told that diagnosis, I sought the proper doctor. I sought the diagnosis. And it turned out I have chronic Lyme disease, which is a chronic neurological illness that mimics many diseases.
[36:01] Speaker 2: Oh.
[36:01] Speaker 11: And in me, it mimicked ALS.
[36:04] Speaker 2: Oh, for heaven's sake. Well, I mean, it's not that good that you have that as an alternative, but better than Lou Gehrig's disease, (laughs) right?
[36:12] Speaker 11: As I say, almost anything is better than Lou Gehrig's disease-
[36:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[36:17] Speaker 11: ... in its classical form, because that is usually a death sentence in six months.
[36:23] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's... Uh, yeah, we w- looked back at the movie and he was a baseball player that had it, that, that... it was named after him, Lou Gehrig. Um-
[36:32] Speaker 11: Exactly.
[36:34] Speaker 2: Okay.
[36:34] Speaker 11: And he rapidly declined-
[36:37] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
[36:37] Speaker 11: ... and that's where the name came out, or the eponym came out for it, of Lou Gehrig disease.
[36:43] Speaker 2: Yep.Okay. So I really g- it got my attention when you had some sample topics that we were gonna be discussing, and you say, "Authority is the new currency." And boy, did that strike a bell with me with what's happening in our world today. It seems like power is money and money is power.
[37:07] Speaker 11: Well, you know, it is true. And studying ... You know, I have a syndicated radio show where I've had over 1,300 guests, and each one is an authority in their own right. And, you know, authority is the new currency. People are drawn to authority. They ... Without being an authority, a person doesn't have much credibility in this life. Uh, people rapidly turn off if a person is not an authority. So that, to me, is something that is essential if a person is going to, quote-unquote, "rule their game." They really need to bec- uh, they need to state their authority, they need to show that they're their authority, and they need to push it forward.
[38:05] Speaker 2: Hmm. Okay. But so, so many people call themselves experts, and I put quotation marks around that. Um, and you say, "Experts don't wait to be discovered, they position themselves to be undeniable." But, you know, there was a, there was a definition of expert, and I bet you'll, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. They used to say, "Expert: ex is a has-been, and spert is a big drip." (laughs)
[38:32] Speaker 11: (laughs) Well, you know, truly, positioning is largely part of it. You know, what do experts do? They write books.
[38:41] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[38:42] Speaker 11: First and foremost, if a person hasn't written a book in, on their area, it really doesn't matter. Y- you know, people like Simon Sinek became so popular because they wrote the book on, on leadership in their area, and therefore, became acknowledged as the expert in leadership. Writing a book is a huge part of being a leader. And, uh, as I interviewed over 1,300 guests, almost every one of them has written a book, and therefore, they can put their ideas out there to the world.
[39:26] Speaker 2: Hmm. Okay. Well, I've been doing interviews for five decades, Dr. Lycka. Uh-
[39:33] Speaker 11: Yes.
[39:33] Speaker 2: ... and I've gotten a lot of opinions (laughs) on a lot of different subjects. A lot of books, some not, didn't have books. But, you know, I don't know, one of the things you said is, "Join the elite or be forgotten." Why should I join the elite? Shouldn't I, uh, people want to be joining me? I'm the elite.
[39:51] Speaker 11: Well, th- the answer is two things. When you join the elite, you are surrounded by people that help you. You step on the shoulders of giants, so to speak. So, you become part of a club where you are different than everybody else. And, and I think that is something that's so important about positioning yourself and being acknowledged that way. Um, you know, I, I see that all the time. Uh, and I, I think when people join that club, are acknowledged in that club, I, I see a difference in them. I see how they are just perceived as different.
[40:43] Speaker 2: Hmm. So what elite did you join?
[40:47] Speaker 11: You know, I've been in several clubs. As a world-leading dermatologist, I was recognized as a world-leading dermatologist. I led the pack for over 30 years. Uh, I was a forerunner in many of the technologies that are done today. When I was a cosmetic dermatologist, I wrote over 17 books, and people would come to me. I wouldn't have to search a client, they would look me up.
[41:20] Speaker 2: Hmm. Okay. So, you're not saying that recognition is vanity, you say it's visibility. So how do you get visible?
[41:31] Speaker 11: Well, the thing about the difference between vanity and visibility is, is you're proud of what you do. You're, you're not trying to be vain, you're trying to let people know your proposition. You're letting people know what you do. Um, you let people know who you are. You let people know what you can offer them. You are the solution for a particular problem they have. And I, I think that's the difference between vanity and, uh, visibility.
[42:11] Speaker 2: Hmm.
[42:11] Speaker 11: You are actually serving people when you're visible, whereas when you're vain, you're serving yourself.
[42:20] Speaker 2: Okay. So, who would you consider ... Or, I don't know, maybe you have more than one. People who are s- some of these leaders that you're talking about, the giants?
[42:33] Speaker 11: Well, you know, in my book, Rule the Game, I have several leaders-
[42:36] Speaker 2: Okay.
[42:36] Speaker 11: ... uh, that I, I name. And that's the first several chapters of my book, so I'm just gonna turn to the index there.
[42:45] Speaker 2: Okay.
[42:45] Speaker 11: One of my teachers was a person by the name of Dan S. Kennedy.... who is acknowledged as the millionaire maker. He teaches people how to run businesses and how to do that very successfully. Brendon Burchard, another very authoritative figure in human transformation that helps people to grow. Tony Robbins, I think everybody acknowledges him-
[43:13] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[43:13] Speaker 11: ... as a leader in human transformation. And, and these are just some of them. I, I list over 13 in my book-
[43:23] Speaker 2: Huh.
[43:23] Speaker 11: ... of people that lead the pack. I already mentioned Simon Sinek, and he, he, he starts with, It Starts With Your Why, you know, a very important thing, which has been either the number one or number two TED Talk ever viewed in the world.
[43:40] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Yeah. It, it's one of those things where don't you have to find who you are, what you are, and what you're good at to begin with?
[43:50] Speaker 11: Yes. It all starts with knowing who you are. It all starts with your reason for being. It all starts with your knowledge of, of doing that. And then things, uh, resonate around that. Without knowing your why, you'll never know what you should do. You really need to know your why, and then you resonate that in the world. For example, one of the greatest investors of all time is Warren Buffett. Well, he knew that's what he wanted to do ever since he was a boy.
[44:27] Speaker 2: Hmm.
[44:27] Speaker 11: He wanted to be an investor. Well, he's proven that by helping, by running a company called Berkshire Hathaway and having 20% returns over many, many, many years. So his why was to invest.
[44:46] Speaker 2: So what would-
[44:47] Speaker 11: Bill Gates is another one. What did he do?
[44:49] Speaker 2: Oh. Yeah.
[44:50] Speaker 11: Well, he decided that he was going to make a difference in the computer world.
[44:55] Speaker 2: Oh.
[44:55] Speaker 11: He made a company called Microsoft.
[44:58] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[44:59] Speaker 11: And took it right to the top of the computer industry. So these are people that led the pack because they saw things differently, and they became the authorities and are still recognized as the authorities in their areas.
[45:16] Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. So here we have Dr. Steven Lycka. Why cosmetic dermatologist for you?
[45:25] Speaker 11: You know, that was interesting. For all those years, um, it just seemed like a natural. From the very first day I did an internship in a dermatologist office, I knew that's what I wanted to do. I knew that was, it was just so instant and, you know, if the glove fit, you wore it, and that's what I did. So for 30 years, I wore or led the pack. And in 2019, you know, I decided after 30 years of leading the pack, it was time to move on. And then, uh, I wrote a best-selling book, The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life, which is now in its second edition, and that's why we're promoting it again. And, you know, I was going to go around the world speaking, but a little thing happened that you may be aware of called the pandemic.
[46:22] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
[46:22] Speaker 11: Ever hear of that thing? (laughs)
[46:24] Speaker 2: (laughs) Yeah, I did. I hear about it. Yeah.
[46:26] Speaker 11: Well, I was going to go around the world speaking, but the world shut down for two years.
[46:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[46:32] Speaker 11: There was no place to speak to, so I started, uh, a syndicated radio show, and it's now heard by seven million people a year. It's called... Seven million a month. It's called L- Live With the Famous Doctor Al. And so, you know, I couldn't go to the world speaking, so the world came to me.
[46:56] Speaker 2: Oh, I love that. (laughs) Okay. So the secrets to living a, a fantastic life, are they some of the things we've talked about already, or do you have another list?
[47:08] Speaker 11: Well, my lists for living a fantastic life are, are fairly simple.
[47:13] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[47:13] Speaker 11: But the first one is the principle that you have to deal with, and the principle is it's not what happens to you, it's what you do with what happens. It's so important to realize that because life is always going to throw curveballs at you.
[47:33] Speaker 2: Yep.
[47:33] Speaker 11: It's always going to throw nasties at you. So you have to adapt a principle of resilience. You have to say, "No, I'm not going to be downtrodden by all this. I'm not gonna be knocked down. If I get knocked down nine times, I'm gonna get up 10 times."
[47:54] Speaker 2: Got it.
[47:54] Speaker 11: And that is one of the secrets to living a fantastic life, and that is so important. And, you know, in my book, I talk about 13 golden pearls, and I call them metaphorical golden pearls because you know what makes a pearl?
[48:13] Speaker 2: Time in an oyster. That's... (laughs)
[48:16] Speaker 11: Yeah. It's a little grain of sand-
[48:19] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[48:19] Speaker 11: ... that gets in the oil in the oyster-
[48:22] Speaker 2: Huh.
[48:22] Speaker 11: ... and the oyster doesn't get destroyed by it, but it literally walls it off. And in the South Pacific, the, some oysters make golden pearls, and they're so beautiful and so rare that they actually cost up to $10,000 for a single, solitary, perfect golden pearl.
[48:44] Speaker 2: Wow.
[48:45] Speaker 11: So in our life, what are the things that do that? Well, a couple of my favorite are l- are the golden pearls I teach in my book are love...... love. What would we do without love? Love is everything. It's, love is everything in our business, love is everything in our relationships. Love is the basics for everything. And I have a little story that crystallizes it. Could I tell that story?
[49:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, sure.
[49:16] Speaker 11: Okay. There was a little girl and she was angelic. She had red curly hair. She was so perfect. Unfortunately, her mother had passed away and she was being raised by her father. You know, one day she decided to give her father a special Christmas gift, but the problem was she didn't have any money. So she wrapped a box and gave it to her father. Her father was angered because there was this empty box.
[49:49] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[49:49] Speaker 11: And the little girl said, "Silly. I blew kisses into that box."
[49:55] Speaker 2: Aw.
[49:56] Speaker 11: "I gave all those kisses to you." Well, tragically, this beautiful girl died and the father was heartbroken and he was so beside himself. Occasionally, he'd imagine the girl sitting on his lap, whispering in his ear and he died of his broken heart. He went to heaven and there was Saint Peter at the golden gates who said, "You must give me something. I can't just let you in there." And he gave her, uh, he gave him that box. And Saint Peter said, "Well, come on in.
[50:32] Speaker 11: You have given me the gift of perfect love."
[50:36] Speaker 2: Oh.
[50:36] Speaker 11: When he got in, he saw his daughter. He said, "Dear, I missed you so much." The daughter said, "Why? I was always there with you. I'd sit on your lap, I'd whisper in your ear, I'd blow you kisses."
[50:53] Speaker 2: Mm.
[50:53] Speaker 11: There's the story of perfect love.
[50:56] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. That's very, very true. Not much... Uh, I was gonna say, not much of that going on these days. (laughs) But there are some.
[51:03] Speaker 11: Oh, we sure need a lot more of it. That's why I'm on shows like yours, to try and help people overcome this.
[51:10] Speaker 2: Yeah. That's true. I also love that you say never be boring and, uh, that's, it's true. 'Cause there's enough... A lot of people try and mimic. You know, "I'll be like this person." No, you should wanna be unique, right?
[51:26] Speaker 11: Exactly. You know, if you are boring, you know as a, a, a radio host that if you're boring, there are how many stations in your area that people can turn to-
[51:40] Speaker 2: Sure.
[51:40] Speaker 11: ... and just go away. I, I think that is the, the scariest thing, that they just turn the channel and just move away. No, that's not a good thing. So always be there, always be present. Give a great message, tell people great stories, give them a reason to be there, give them a reason to want to listen to you.
[52:07] Speaker 2: And also, be interested yourself. Uh, people always say, "How do I choose the topics?" I always look at it this way. If I'd be interested, I'd bet other people would be too. Uh, and, and that's why I love listening to people. I want to hear what you have to say. Uh, I may question it, but I, um, I'm also there to learn. Um, and I think if we all had that attitude, uh, there's nobody in this world... well, maybe a couple of people (laughs) that think they know it all, uh, but they don't. Nobody knows it all. Nobody goes through life without making mistakes, and there are no such things as mistakes unless you do the same one over and over again, then that's just plain stupid. Uh, but if you learn from those mistakes, that's the cl- that's the key to life.
[52:56] Speaker 11: Well, and that's why I say it's not what happens to you, it's what you do with what happens.
[53:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[53:02] Speaker 11: Yes. You're gonna make mistakes. Yes, you're going to be hurt, but if you learn from it, if you grow from it, what a beautiful experience that is. You know, Thomas Edison once said he never failed in making a light bulb. He made... He had 10,000 ways that he found a light bulb wouldn't work.
[53:25] Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
[53:25] Speaker 11: So, think about that. Think how, how he kept moving forward despite the fact each light bulb didn't work.
[53:35] Speaker 2: That's true. That's very, very true. And my dad used to teach me, he said, uh, 'cause when he was very young and was waiting still in a line for a job and this guy, uh, the manager went down the line and said, "Uh, each one, have you ever made a mistake?" Well, most of them said, "No. No, no, no, no. I don't make mistakes." Uh, and all that. When m- they came to my dad, he said, "I slipped and I said, 'Yeah, I make mistakes.'" He was hired because first of all, he was honest. Second of all, he said, "I make mistakes, but I learn from those mistakes and I go on." Um, and that's the attitude that we have to have 'cause we all make mistakes.
[54:16] Speaker 11: Well, I have a little grandson, uh, Finn, that's two years old. And he loves to play baseball.
[54:23] Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
[54:23] Speaker 11: So, what he does is throw a ball in the air and when he does, he'll say, "Missed that one, try again."
[54:32] Speaker 2: (laughs)
[54:32] Speaker 11: "Missed that one, try again."
[54:34] Speaker 2: (laughs) Oh, cute.
[54:36] Speaker 11: So, picture that. Two years old and he's already shaping his existence, saying, "Doesn't matter if I miss that one."
[54:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[54:43] Speaker 11: "I'm gonna try again."
[54:46] Speaker 2: I love it. I love it. Yeah. W- wasn't there an old saying? "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." And that's what life is all about. There is no... I hate people are, who are afraid of failure, um-I, I don't know. I guess we all are to a certain extent. We don't wanna fail. We wanna be perfect. Nobody is perfect. Even, you know, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, they're not perfect. Nobody's perfect.
[55:14] Speaker 11: Oh, and, and Warren always was very humble enough to say his mistakes and say what he learned from them.
[55:23] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[55:23] Speaker 11: Uh, you know, he's retiring this year at the age of 92, but he readily says his mistakes so that people will not move forward in those same category.
[55:36] Speaker 2: That's right.
[55:37] Speaker 11: He readily says what he's done wrong. And so that is learning and teaching, and this is why I admire these people I put in my book-
[55:47] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[55:47] Speaker 11: ... because they have learned from their mistakes and will move forward.
[55:53] Speaker 2: Absolutely. So, what is, what's the biggest mistake you ever made?
[55:59] Speaker 11: You know, probably not, uh, moving forward early enough, probably not, uh, taking part in things early enough. You know, some things, uh, in cosmetic surgery I thought were really a lark and so I didn't get involved in them, so some of those. Sometimes getting involved in some things that later turned out to be... Some lasers I bought never worked a single day in my office.
[56:29] Speaker 2: Huh.
[56:29] Speaker 11: So, that is something that I learned from about some of these, uh, things that are told to be the God's gift to medicine but they don't turn out to be God's gift to medicine.
[56:42] Speaker 2: Got it. Do you have a website?
[56:45] Speaker 11: Yes, drallenlycka.com. That's D-R-A-L-L-E-N, Lycka, L-Y-C-K-A.com, drallenlycka.com.
[56:58] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[56:58] Speaker 11: And if anybody would like to get a copy of my new book, Rule the Game, they could go to dral.ca, dral.ca. We're taking pre-orders there so that we can get it out to everybody within a month or two.
[57:15] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[57:15] Speaker 11: So go to my website, go to my book. I would love to talk to people. If you'd like to talk to me, you could get to me through my website.
[57:24] Speaker 2: I love it. Terrific. Thank you so much for taking the time to be with us, because boy, we need... Uh, I, I, I agree with you on one thing, listening, listening to experts and people who have lived the life already. Why should I go through the school of hard knocks? Let you do the hard knocks and I'll learn.
[57:43] Speaker 11: Well, the school of hard knocks is, the school of hard knocks is tough because it gives the test before the lesson.
[57:49] Speaker 2: There, you-
[57:49] Speaker 11: Better to learn from other people's mistakes than your own.
[57:52] Speaker 2: I love it. Well, keep up the good work, and of, of course the two books will both be on your website, or can they get them at Amazon and all that?
[58:00] Speaker 11: Uh, the first one, The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life, is on, on Amazon. Second one is in pre-sales right now.
[58:07] Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
[58:07] Speaker 11: So dral.ca.
[58:09] Speaker 2: Okay.
[58:09] Speaker 11: Mary Jane?
[58:10] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[58:10] Speaker 11: It's been my pleasure.
[58:11] Speaker 2: Right back atcha. You keep up the good work and, you know, we'll keep plugging out there to try and... We learn and then pass on that learning to others to make their lives better.
[58:21] Speaker 11: Perfect. Thank you so much.
[58:23] Speaker 2: Thank you. Take care now.
[58:25] Speaker 11: Bye now.
[58:26] Speaker 2: Bye-bye now. Dr. Allen Lycka. That's L-Y-C-K-A, and you can go to drallenlycka.com, uh, and get the information from somebody who's been there, done that, and really cares. And boy, that caring is the most important thing, don't you think, folks? In the meantime, you know, I'll leave you with a saying. You know I love to have saving sayings and I'm always looking them up. I think this one really, really fits. "Fortune favors the bold," and that comes from Virgil, and it's true. You have to be bold. You don't, you don't wanna be boring. In the meantime, live simply, laugh often, love deeply, and above all else, dare to dream.
