Women’s Voices Are Being Silenced:
One Campaign Is Building Doors to Make Them Heard
Amid Alarming Erasure, Building Doors Fights for Gender Equity
in Male-Dominated Voice-Over, Especially in Sports

Cleveland, Ohio — In a year marked by unsettling setbacks for women's visibility—from the removal of Women’s History Month from Google’s calendar to increasing legislative and corporate rollbacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion—one campaign is taking bold action to ensure women’s voices aren’t just heard but amplified. The Building Doors Campaign is challenging the status quo in the voice-over industry by advocating for equal opportunities in male-dominated spaces, especially within sports and other traditionally male-oriented brands.

The need for this movement is clear: During the 2025 NFL AFC Championship game, 78% of all ads and promos were voiced by men. At the Super Bowl, that number surged to 85%. A survey conducted by Building Doors further revealed that 73% of male voice actors receive 5+ auditions per year for male-dominated sports promos, while only 27% of their female counterparts reported the same.

“Women’s voices have historically been underrepresented in the media, and that disparity is now at risk of getting even worse,” says Christy Harst, founder of the Building Doors Campaign. “Representation matters. When women’s voices aren’t heard, their stories, perspectives, and power are diminished. We’re here to change that.”

The Building Doors Campaign takes a bold approach by spotlighting female voice actors re-voicing ads originally voiced by men, encouraging brands and agencies to embrace gender diversity. Through strategic advocacy and powerful storytelling, the campaign isn’t just pushing for representation—it’s demanding industry-wide equity

Due to the campaign's momentum, Christy Harst has engaged in face-to-face conversations with leading brands like Valvoline, the Cleveland Guardians, the Cleveland Cavaliers, SportsNet, PressX2Play, and more. These discussions are paving the way for change in an industry that has long sidelined female voices.

Christy brings unparalleled credibility to her mission. She has appeared on over a dozen podcasts, been nominated for the voice-over industry’s prestigious Unicorn Award, and will speak on a panel for Women’s History Month, hosted by EmpowHER, the women’s organization for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

About the Building Doors Campaign
Launched in 2024, the Building Doors Campaign advocates for equal opportunities in the voice-over industry, focusing on male-dominated brands, especially in sports. The campaign empowers female voice actors to lend their voices to ads traditionally voiced by men, urging brands and agencies to embrace gender diversity. By challenging industry norms and advocating for equal opportunities for both men and women, Building Doors aims to foster equity across the voice-over landscape.

Why Now?
With recent social and political events signaling a disturbing trend toward minimizing women's voices in society, the Building Doors Campaign stands as a vital counter-narrative. As representation continues to decline across media platforms, initiatives like Building Doors are not just important—they are imperative.

Biography

For years, I’ve been trying to break into male dominated sports voice over promo, but despite top-notch training and creative marketing, I made little headway.

During an online workshop with a prominent promo talent agent, I asked what my chances were to voice a promo for male dominated sports. She was honest: not so much. She explained that while there are opportunities for women in male sports promo, they are few and far between. She urged me to make my own path.

If there isn't even a door for me to knock on, how can I get in? Frustrated, disappointed, and quite frankly angry I knew I had a choice to make. Either I give up on my goal of voicing for male dominated sports, or I build the door for not only me but for all women in my industry to have greater access to these opportunities.

So, on March 1, 2024, I launched the Building Doors campaign. I collaborate with female voice actors from around the world to voice ads traditionally done by men, encouraging brands and agencies to embrace gender diversity.

Building Doors isn’t about taking jobs from men—it’s about equity. My goal is to see 50% of male-dominated sports promos voiced by women. This won’t happen overnight, but I’m committed to making it a reality.
