Let's talk with guest, JON GRINSPAN, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution - Author Jon Grinspan will speak with Marília and I about political acrimony in America. What does yesterday tell us about today? Is the 2021 insurrection somehow connected to the past? We'll talk about this and what our future may be going forward. Jan. 6th was not the first attack on the U.S. Capitol, but will it be the last?  What, exactly, is history teaching us in this moment in time?

Headlined Show, Responder Resilience June 15, 2022

Norm Wielsch was a police officer for 26 years, during which time he saw a lot, made some bad decisions, suffered and overcome opioid addiction and spent time in prison. Norm is here to tell us how he is emerging stronger to help others. In this episode Norm  talks about how he emerged stronger from his suffering and became a positive force in the lives of others.

For a law enforcement officer, traumatic emotional wounds and scars are not always visible to the public but they are there. This episode is about strength and compassion. It is about emerging from the dark, finding support and understanding, and becoming stronger. Norm Wielsch shares his story of extreme loss, extreme pain, and extreme growth. Norm is a survivor and a great example of the positive power that can grow from adversity.

Norm Wielsch had a successful career as commander of an elite anti drug task force. After medical challenges and dozens of surgeries, he experienced opioid addiction and was later incarcerated in federal prison, obtained a master’s degree in Theology and Christian Counseling, a Doctorate Degree in Christian Counseling, and a Certificate as a California Registered Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor. While in prison, he counseled inmates, preached God’s word, and led bible studies. Norm says God healed his daughter’s serious illness and healed his PTSD through the Christ-Centered Healing process. This led him to author a book on spiritual development called Christ Centered Healing of Trauma: Healing a Broken Heart. Today, he is an Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselor and does Pastoral Care in a men’s residential rehabilitation facility in Northern California.

Headlined Show, Responder Resilience June 8, 2022

In this video, we discuss Police Wellness and Resilience, and the soon to be released book "Living Blue" being written by Barbara Rubel and Jason M. Palamara.

Law enforcement occupations have higher prevalence of burnout and secondary traumatic stress than many other occupational groups. The purpose of this new book is to provide law enforcement officers, their families, and the communities they serve with practical information to aid in the prevention of occupational vicarious trauma, burnout, and compassion fatigue.

Regardless of how long you have been working in law enforcement, it is evident that the job can be highly stressful and, as a result, can have a dramatic impact on the health and well-being of officers. Through the real life experiences Jason Palamara had as an NYPD Cold Case detective, and Barbara Rubel’s expertise as an author, researcher, trainer and speaker, this book will be a practical guide to help police practitioners understand the nature of occupational stress and the importance of wellness and resilience. It will outline the main risk factors, the impact of vicarious trauma, and guidelines for resilience and stress-management. The authors draw on their extensive experience of working with police and other first responders to provide a comprehensive, accessible, and evidence-based resource.

In law enforcement, police officers and firefighters experience some of the highest rates of job-related stress, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This new book, Living Blue, will focus on how law enforcement officers can cope with vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma is the result of police officers witnessing the trauma to or death of another person, and it can lead to physical and psychological disorders.

At Responder Resilience, we are dedicated to helping our brothers and sisters in blue. We recognize that with increased exposure to trauma and stress, law enforcement, firefighters, EMS and other first responders face unique challenges in the workplace and at home.

Jason M. Palamara is a U.S. Navy Veteran and a retired New York City Police Department Cold Case Homicide Detective. Jason has served as a peer support counselor with the NYPD, he’s also a John C. Maxwell certified life coach, and founder of First Responder Coaching.  Jason has been a recent guest on Responder Resilience, speaking about his role as director of Veteran & First Responder Engagement for Forge VFR.

Barbara Rubel, is a leading authority and award-winning author on burnout, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. As a nationally recognized keynote speaker and trainer, she motivates law enforcement officers and victim service providers to focus on wellness and resilience. She was featured in an Emmy award winning documentary and is the author of: But I Didn’t Say Goodbye: Helping Families After a Suicide, the 30-hr. CE course for Nurses, Loss, Grief, and Bereavement, and the CE course, COVID-19 Loss, Grief, and Bereavement. Her website is www.barbararubel.com

with RAY SHASHO

on INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS

When recollecting those perpetual hit makers of the ‘60s, singer/songwriter Tommy Roe’s accomplishments are among the elite of the music industry. Tommy Roe wrote and recorded (6) Top 10 hits between 1962 -1969, more than any other solo American artist, including (11) Top 40 hits, (4) certified gold singles, and (2) #1 Hits.

Tommy Roe is a member of the Hit Parade Hall of Fame, The Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and The Rockabilly Hall of Fame.  Rock and Roll pioneer Tommy Roe became an overnight Top 40 radio sensation with his 1962 #1 Hit “Sheila,” a tune in which Roe pays homage to Buddy Holly. Tommy Roe scored again the following year with his Top 10 hit, “Everybody” reaching #3 in the U.S.

In 1963, Tommy Roe and Chris Montez (“Let’s Dance,” “Call Me,” “The More I See You”) toured with an up and coming rock and roll band called The Beatles.  Roe initially tried to get The Beatles a recording contract but was told by a record executive to stick to writing music and leave the record business to him. When The Beatles popularity materialized, Tommy Roe was asked to perform at their first American concert at the Washington Coliseum in D.C. Because of an overseas wave of music to hit the U.S. called the British Invasion, Roe was forced to conceive a new sound.

In 1966, Tommy Roe’s #8 Top 40 bubblegum hit, “Sweet Pea” swept the nation, followed by a British Invasion influence release, “Hooray for Hazel” which reached #6 on Billboard’s Top 100.

In 1969, Tommy Roe struck gold twice with the prevailing, “Dizzy” reaching #1 and the Freddy Weller (Paul Revere & the Raiders) co-written tune, “Jam Up and Jelly Tight” peaking at #8 on the Billboard charts.
