Okay, let me introduce our guest. Our guest medium tonight is Cathy Nadal. She began communicating with spirit at the age of nine. Cathy has trained at the Arthur Findlay College in England, and she is not only one of the certified psychic mediums with the Forever Family Foundation, but she is also clairvoyant and specializes in coffee readings, which you can see a sample of on our website.

Cathy is retired from the U.S. military, and she also participates in events for wounded veterans. She is the author of the book Seeing More Than Clouds in Your Coffee: Stories of a Psychic Medium in New York City, and the book And She Danced by the Light of the Moon. Of course. You know I love having you on. It's never a chore. Cathy, I wanted to ask you, though: what is the name of your radio show? I was looking for it at the last minute, and I was like, “Oh, I didn't put the name of the show.”

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
Oh, yeah. It's actually on BBS Radio, the same as Signs of Life Radio. The name of my show is Bringing the Darkness to the Light. It's based on most of my guests, who are musicians - rock and roll, heavy metal. I'm actually connected to two music PR groups. One of them is Chipster PR, and the other is Michael Brandvold. They send me a lot of touring musicians, and I have the opportunity of interviewing them.

I always joke around that, with Bringing the Darkness to the Light, there's always some darkness in someone's light. A lot of times it comes out in the readings, but a lot of times the musicians say, “I haven't really talked about this in a long time,” or “I've never really talked about this,” or “I need to talk about this more.”

I have a large platform on social media, so the radio show is really very helpful because a lot of people realize that it's not just readings that I do. I'm also a certified grief educator with Dr. David Kessler's program. During the school year, I do grief counseling with children in the school system. So I'm involved in a lot of things.

Speaker 2 - Joe Perreta, Host:
I love that. And you must be psychic, because you opened the door for me to ask the question I wanted to ask you, which is actually a selfish question. My grandmother passed away two months ago, and I have had a lot of people asking me questions. Some people ask kind of silly questions, to be honest, like, “Oh, so do you not grieve because you can talk to them?” And I'm like, “No, that's not really how it works for me.”

But I wanted to ask you, as a medium and now that I know you do grief counseling, how being a medium changes the way you deal with losing your own people in the physical world.

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
I'm glad you asked me that, because I've had that question a lot. I always say that I don't grieve any differently than anyone else, because the reason we grieve is that we love the person who died.

In doing grief education and working especially with children, we try to get them to understand what has actually happened, and also to use terminology like, “Your parent died,” or “Your sibling died,” because they really have died. There is a lot of awareness in bringing them to understand that even though the person died, they are still part of the family.

There's a big piece to grief, but there is also a big piece to learning. I often tell people that I learn from listening to other people. When someone starts telling me their journey, especially with sudden deaths, I learn a lot. What I've really learned in the last few years of doing grief education is that everyone grieves differently.

One of the most frustrating things I often hear is that one person in the family has died, and everyone in the household is acting differently. Not everyone is grieving the same way. One of the biggest frustrations people have is that they try to compare grief. They wonder, “How come they're not grieving this way?” or “How come they're not crying enough?” There are a lot of variables in how someone reacts to something.

I always say that grief is a personal journey. Sometimes people react differently than their personality. A lot of times people say, “Oh my God, they're such a loud person, and they completely shut down after that person died. It's hard to get them to even talk.” So I appreciate the question, and I'm sorry for the loss of your grandmother. I saw the beautiful tribute you did to her with all the photographs. She was more of a mom to you than a grandmom.

Speaker 2 - Joe Perreta, Host:
Yeah. I am definitely close to my mom, of course, but my grandmother was sort of like everybody's mother. She was just that person. But yes, I wanted to know. I don't know why I didn't ask the last guest last month about that, but I wanted to ask you because I was almost surprised by how many people really thought that, because we do this work, we would not be as affected by it.

Some people say, “It must be a little easier for you,” and I'm like, “Not really.” I'm not speaking for you, but I'm sure this is true for you too. We're definitely probably better at getting a sign or knowing when something is something. We have that slight advantage, but it really doesn't help very much.

I don't know if you've had this experience, because I'm sure you've had your own major losses in your life with friends and family, but it also changes the way we work when we have a personal loss. I'm always a big questioner of everything, and I think that makes me a good medium. I think you're sort of the same way.

Since my grandmother passed, now I want more answers. I was kind of cool with sitting there and saying, “Okay, spirit said I might not be able to understand this with my physical body,” and now I'm like, “No, I have to know.” Did you find that happened after people passed?

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
It's interesting, because one of the first deaths I was close to happened when I was in ninth grade. A classmate died. She had been sick, so it was the first time we all went to a funeral, literally the whole high school.

But the first immediate family member who died was my mom, and she died suddenly. That's one of the reasons I wanted to become a grief educator, because in the 1980s, when she died, there was no grief education. There was nothing. We were in a Catholic school, and it was like, “You can talk to a nun,” but that was about the best we were getting.

Speaker 2 - Joe Perreta, Host:
Right. And that might not give you the most comfort.

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
Exactly. For me as a medium, the only answer I give people is that grieving is not easier, but it is more understandable. Now I know, especially when I do these readings, that my family member, my friend, or whoever is close to me who has died is in a good place. I know that they are going to come through in a reading. Sometimes I have to be patient, but they are going to come through in a reading.

And just because we're mediums, it doesn't guarantee that if we're sitting in a room or we're part of a gallery as the audience, we're going to get the reading any quicker than anyone else in the room. A lot of people say, “You're going to go to that event with me. You're going to get the reading because the other side knows you're a medium.”

Speaker 2 - Joe Perreta, Host:
Right. No, we don't have a VIP pass.

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
That's not how it works. I wish.

Speaker 2 - Joe Perreta, Host:
Yeah, I know. I like that point. Before we get to the phones, I'll say this, and then we can get to everyone's phone calls. The reason I did want to talk about this on here is because I think a lot of people assume that about mediums. I want everyone listening to know that we're all in the same boat. Just because you and I know how to do this for other people does not mean we have the upper hand.

When you're getting a reading with a medium, we've been there. I think it's important for people to understand that, because if I were on the outside and thought that way, I might wonder, “What the heck is this person going to be able to sympathize with me about if they can talk to whoever they want?” But that's not the case. So I think that's an important point to make.

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
One other thing I wanted to add, Joe, is what I always tell people: getting a reading is for validation and also for comfort, but it is not therapy. Depending upon the death, certain deaths actually feel energetically heavier, such as a crime scene, a sudden death, or a traumatic death. A reading does not take the place of therapy.

That's why when I talk about being a certified grief educator with Dr. David Kessler, it's because that is education. I do not provide readings, insight, or anything I would provide if I were working as a psychic or medium. I'm there to educate someone that what they are feeling is normal.

A lot of times, there are many things people go through in grief. Especially, and you know this as well as I do, when children die, it really rocks the family.

Oh, yeah.

There are a lot of statistics out there that a couple may not survive that, or a couple will go through a really difficult time staying a couple, because the death of a child is so unbearable.

Those are the things we would talk about in grief education, doing actual grief work, like exercises: creating a memory box, or doing the empty-chair exercise, where you get the opportunity to introduce that person to the person you're working with or to the group. Those are therapeutic and healing ways to talk about the person who died and bring them to life for everyone in the room. That is what we call healing grief work. That's the stuff that really needs to be done.

It's interesting how she comes through, because she gives me a very big feeling about your mother's side of the family. She wants to bring up what's going on right now around your family. A lot of times, those on the other side will bring up things that are happening currently. She is sending you a lot of love. Do you understand that some people in your family are going through a very stressful time right now?

She keeps putting hearts around you. She is sending you a lot of love. One of the people going through a lot of stress right now is you, and she wants you to take it easy.

When I go to your dog, there was a situation around your dog that I want to bring up in a two-part way. Whatever happened with your dog, it was like the dog was not well, then well, and then not well again. When I go to the dog, I feel like it was two parts. Do you understand that?

The dog is showing me a lot of love. It was like the dog was taking me on a roller-coaster ride with your emotions. The dog is sending a lot of love to you.

The dog keeps wanting to show me a little throw rug or little rug that you have, and it keeps showing me your shoes next to the rug. I don't know if that's something you had while the dog was here or something you have now, but it keeps wanting to talk about your shoes next to the rug. Do you understand that?

Kind of. I don't have a throw rug, but I do keep my shoes in certain places.

Speaker 3 - Cathy Nadal, Guest Medium:
It's like the dog is visiting you wherever you keep your shoes. There is a big connection between you and the dog. The dog actually comes through in a very human-like way. Near where you sleep, near your bed, there is a frame of the dog or a frame of you and the dog. It keeps wanting to show me a frame in your sleeping area connected to the dog. Do you understand that?

No, not at all. The dog showed me an emotional roller coaster that the dog went through with you. It is not connected to any kind of curse or attachment.

He comes through in a very giving way. In living life, he would have been a very genuine person and someone who gave a lot of his energy. He keeps saying that you and he are similar, because he talks about you helping a lot of people or offering a lot of your help. Do you understand this?

He talks about you being inspirational and not even knowing it. He puts his hand on his stomach. He had some internal health stuff going on. Do you understand that? By putting his hand on his stomach, it's either that he had a stomach issue or that he somehow lost his appetite. He is showing me a medical symbol, which usually means he was diagnosed or had a medical condition.

Hi, Ariel. I'm glad you called in. As you started to talk, I kept hearing the same thing over and over again. There is a younger person passed for you. Do you understand a younger person passed for you?

Not yet, but I might as you talk.

The person is coming through with younger energy. The passing also feels sudden or unexpected, because when I get sudden or unexpected, I get this feeling of being whisked away. The person comes through feeling young, which can sometimes be a little deceiving to me, because if they are a little older than I'm describing them, they may want to be remembered as young.

They keep talking about being in your family. Do you understand having someone in your family who would have passed suddenly or unexpectedly?

If it's close enough as a friend, I would take that. Do you have a friend who passed suddenly or unexpectedly? Friends sometimes come in as family members.

Sure. I can hop in. Ariel, I am really picking up on two things here, and you might think I'm crazy for what I'm about to say. It's something I don't think I've ever said before. But let's back up one second.

Ariel, I definitely have either a grandmother or a great-aunt on the other side, because she does come through a little bit older. I'm assuming you have at least one grandmother who has passed.

Yeah, that's correct.

She made you laugh. Your grandmother showed me walking into a very stereotypical old-lady kind of house. I don't know if she used to knit, collected teacups, or did all of that, but I keep seeing this. I feel like if I walked into her house, I'd be like, “Oh, a 75- or 85-year-old woman lives here.” Different grandmothers have that vibe - very typical grandma stuff.

I could see one of them having that vibe.

She also showed me a clock. I don't know if it's a cuckoo clock or some clock that chimes every hour, but I feel like it's more than just a wall clock. Maybe your mom or possibly dad would have that. Okay. I think that's the grandmother I have. She had a lot of knickknacks and stuff. The message I got, Ariel - and this could be connected to you, another friend, or someone else in your family - is that your grandmother showed me being with the soul of a baby on the other side who either was a later-term miscarriage, unfortunately, or this baby was born and did not live for very long.

I'm hearing something, and this is the part where I feel like you may think I'm insane because I don't think I've heard of anyone doing this, but there is nothing wrong with it. I feel like someone would have kept a piece of the umbilical cord or something. I really feel like someone is keeping it, almost like keeping a lock of someone's hair or their hairbrush. It's a physical part of them. I keep seeing this with the baby, and I can't help but feel like it has something to do with the birth, or it's an unusual situation. Do you know anything about that at all, Ariel?

The only thing I can think of is that I know someone in the family who recently had a baby, and they might have kept the umbilical cord. The baby is fine, but there was a miscarriage prior to that with a different child.

I may take that. That is totally fine, because I did see the one baby on the other side. Especially if she had a miscarriage after three months, I would take that even more. But I think the key thing here is keeping a piece of the umbilical cord, because I don't think most people do that. That's why I felt it was such an unusual thing to talk about. Is that either a best friend of yours or a cousin that we're talking about here?

It would have been my brother's child.

Oh, okay. The only reason I said best friend or cousin is because I saw distance with the mom. But if she's not your blood sister, I'll take why I'm getting it like that. Even if you're close to her, they're just trying to show me not blood-related or distantly related. Please know that your grandmother is with that soul, that baby who did not make it to the physical world, even though they have their baby now. That's very important to say.

Ariel, I'll give you one last thing before I let you go. I'm sorry these readings are so quick, but I keep hearing April. I could be talking about the month of April as significant, but do we have anyone with the name April? First name or middle name? I keep hearing April, April, April.
