Terry Tucker on Responder Resilience
Broadcast Date

What does the phrase “Motivational Check” mean? Former LEO Terry Tucker has reinvented himself frequently over his professional career. He was an officer and SWAT Hostage Negotiator with the Cincinnati Police Department.

Motivational Check is a mantra from when Terry was a recruit in the Cincinnati Police Academy, it was a phrase any classmates could shout if they needed encouragement, motivation, or support. The class's response was to answer with a loud “84,” signifying their Recruit Class number and letting the person needing the reassurance know that we were all there for him or her.

His greatest challenge began in early 2012 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer requiring multiple surgeries, including the amputation of his left leg above the knee. He is also being treated for tumors in his lungs.

Terry is an amazing example of using your greatest challenge to make you stronger. He refused to be a victim of this malignancy and knew the only way cancer could win is if he gave up or gave in to the disease.

Terry Tucker is a motivational speaker, author, and international podcast guest on the topics of motivation, mindset, and self-development. He has a business administration degree from The Citadel (where he played NCAA Division I college basketball) and a master’s degree from Boston University. In his professional career, Terry has been a marketing executive, a hospital administrator, a SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator, a high school basketball coach, a business owner, a motivational speaker, and for the past ten years, a cancer warrior (which has resulted in the amputation of his foot in 2018 and his leg in 2020). He is the author of the book, Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles To Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life.
