Raising Expectations with Pastor Joe Schofield, Melba Schofield, Stefanie Thayer, Dr. Craig Thayer, Dr. Paul Hall, and Ron Greer
Never Doubt the Power of a Positive Word
Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman joins the Raising Expectations team for an uplifting conversation about hope, Christian identity, compassionate ministry, and the lasting influence of words spoken with faith and love.
Friends,
Here is a special word from Sheila Schuller Coleman just for you and tonight’s “Raising Expectations “show!
"Never Doubt the Power of a Positive Word!
Have you ever considered that you carry the power of life and death in your words?
When I became friends with a homeless man, Mark, I saw firsthand that the positive words I’d been taught by my father really can save lives!
It’s my mission in life to remind others that they, too, have this within themselves. To receive and even to give words of life to others."
It’s going to be a great and informative night together!
Guest Spotlight
Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman brings a deeply personal and pastoral message shaped by her Christian faith, her ministry experience, and the teachings of her father, Dr. Robert Schuller. Throughout the episode, she reflects on lessons she received about reframing negative language, encouraging people through words of hope, and recognizing practical needs as an essential part of compassionate ministry. She shares stories from her work with homeless families, children, churches, international ministries, and individuals she has encountered in everyday places. Her message centers on the belief that even one sincere and compassionate statement can plant a seed whose eventual impact may be far greater than the speaker ever sees.
Don't forget to check out our guest, Dr. Coleman's books!

Never Doubt the Power of a Positive Word
Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman introduces the evening’s central theme by explaining how her father taught her to examine every word and reframe messages from a positive perspective. She acknowledges that speaking this way requires intention and discipline but says Christians can express the hope of Jesus Christ through language that encourages rather than discourages. To illustrate the principle, she recalls meeting a homeless man named Mark through a weekly meal ministry she established at the Crystal Cathedral campus. When Mark told her that he did not believe in God, she responded that God believed in him. Years later, she encountered him again and learned that he had embraced Christianity and was playing guitar in a worship band. For Dr. Coleman, the experience demonstrates how words can function like seeds whose growth may remain unseen for years.
Restoring Hope Before Despair Takes Hold
The conversation expands into the relationship between encouragement, despair, and the human need for hope. Dr. Paul Hall observes that the loss of hope can be associated with suicidal despair, prompting the panel to discuss the responsibility carried by parents, grandparents, pastors, teachers, counselors, and other caring adults. Dr. Coleman and the Raising Expectations team describe words as capable of producing either healthy or damaging fruit, especially when spoken repeatedly over children. Stefanie Thayer explains that an offhand criticism received in childhood can become a destructive belief that follows someone into adulthood. The speakers therefore encourage replacing inherited negative messages with Scripture-based affirmations and truthful declarations of identity. Their discussion presents hope as something that can be strengthened through intentional language, prayer, community, and compassionate attention.
Speaking Identity Over Children and Grandchildren
Dr. Coleman shares how she applies these principles within her own family by deliberately choosing affirming language for her grandchildren. Rather than calling an energetic child a “handful,” she calls him a “heartful,” reframing his liveliness as something valuable rather than burdensome. She tells the story of that grandson praying for a sibling and eventually welcoming triplets into the family, which she describes with humor and gratitude. Dr. Coleman teaches her grandchildren to describe themselves as one-in-a-million miracles, blessed and highly favored, and beloved children of the Most High God. She believes children must learn to claim their spiritual identity for themselves so they can resist harmful messages when parents and grandparents are not present. The panel agrees that repeatedly speaking loving and truthful words can help children develop healthier beliefs about their value, abilities, and purpose.
Lessons from Dr. Robert Schuller’s Ministry
A substantial portion of the program reflects on the ministry philosophy and personal example of Dr. Robert Schuller. Dr. Coleman explains that her father was frequently criticized for offering what some called a “feel-good gospel,” but she says his primary concern was reaching people who were not already connected to a church. He believed that those who were already Christians had assurance of heaven, while his calling was to communicate the gospel to people who might otherwise reject or never hear it. She recounts how his missionary uncle taught him that people in China first needed rice before they were prepared to receive a religious message. That lesson led Dr. Schuller to ask residents of Garden Grove what they needed and contributed to his well-known ministry principle, “Find a need and fill it.” The panel connects this approach with the ministry of Jesus, emphasizing that feeding people, healing them, helping them find deliverance, and assuring them of God’s love can be integral to spiritual outreach.
Compassion in Everyday Encounters
Dr. Coleman describes ordinary public encounters as opportunities to offer encouragement and recognize the dignity of others. She recounts meeting a grocery-store employee named Isaac who described his heart as small and dark and said he was not important to anyone. Dr. Coleman responded that he was important to God and continued praying for him whenever she saw him afterward. When she later saw Isaac smiling and laughing, she viewed the encounter as encouragement to keep praying and to continue planting positive words without assuming she would immediately see their results. The conversation also includes humorous examples of misunderstood comments in public places, reinforcing how quickly words can travel beyond their intended audience. The speakers encourage listeners to remain attentive during routine activities because people may be more willing to talk, receive prayer, or accept encouragement than expected.
The Heart of a Warrior and Faith During Difficult Seasons
Dr. Coleman discusses her book The Heart of a Warrior, which she says began as an assignment from God to address the spiritual needs of children. While researching the condition of young people, she encountered a statistic about rising suicide rates among 14-year-olds that deeply affected her and strengthened her commitment to prayer and ministry. She also reflects on helping prepare her father’s messages for publication, including Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!, and offers its central encouragement to listeners facing hardship. Recalling a difficult season at the Crystal Cathedral, she describes going to a prayer garden and receiving renewed strength through the words of a hymn assuring her of God’s presence and sustaining power. Dr. Coleman encourages listeners to pray, as she does, “Lord, give me the same faith in You that You have in Yourself,” especially when confronting circumstances that appear immovable. Her testimony frames courage not as the absence of fear, but as choosing to trust and move forward despite fear.
From Encouraging Words to Active Ministry
The final portion of the conversation shows how Dr. Coleman’s message extends into tangible service. She describes Hope Center of Christ, her pastoral work, and partnerships with ministries supporting children, pregnant women and mothers, homeless families, churches, and communities in Kenya. One outreach began with the purchase of sheep for women in a Kenyan village and expanded as others contributed money and the animals multiplied, eventually helping one woman obtain a cow. Dr. Coleman also discusses her desire for a permanent church property where her congregation could establish programs for children, partner with ministries serving women in crisis pregnancies, feed homeless people, create a school, and provide additional community services. Melba Schofield prays for the property, the ministries, the mothers, and the children they hope to serve. Stefanie Thayer then prays for people serving in ministry and for provision for Raising Expectations, while Dr. Craig Thayer offers a separate prayer for BBS Radio TV, its staff, its continued operation, and its protection.
Raising Expectations Through Faith, Service, and Hope
Pastor Joe Schofield closes the program by drawing together the episode’s themes of identity, prayer, courage, encouragement, and compassionate service. He describes Dr. Coleman and the Raising Expectations team as people who have served faithfully in different ways and who encourage listeners to believe they can face hardship through prayer, faith, and their identity in Christ. The hosts invite the audience to raise their expectations, pray through financial or personal difficulties, and trust that hardship does not eliminate purpose or hope. Dr. Coleman’s stories reinforce the idea that ministry can begin with something as simple as a positive statement, a meal, a prayer, a sheep, or a willingness to ask another person what they need. The episode ultimately presents encouragement as both a spiritual discipline and a practical responsibility. Its closing message invites listeners to speak life, meet needs, remain faithful, and recognize the possibilities contained within even the smallest act of love.

Speaker 7 - Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman
Well, I'm so honored and excited to be with all of you And yeah, I've been the Lord just I was raised to watch my words Dad used to say it was easy to write a message The first time But then he said I have to go back And reframe it from a positive perspective Every word And he said that's a lot more difficult to do Than you would think And even though I know that principle I can tell you there's so many times I fail and they like to do that And so The Lord has been just impressing upon me How important it is Especially for those We carry Christ within us Right? As Christians Hopefully prayerfully we do And one way we can release Jesus Christ is through words of hope And encouragement And boy our world is just so hungry Right? For words of encouragement Words of hope And as we were preparing for this Melba and Joe and I we were talking And I told them a story don't remember why But I was I launched at the Crystal Cathedral campus Monday Meals Which was a hot meal one day a week For the homeless in our city of Garden Grove And we had about a hundred People including families Including fathers and children And mothers that came every Monday For a hot meal And I would go and I would circle around And talk to all of them And one day Mark said This one man he says Hey pastor my name is Mark And he said I just want you to know I don't believe in God And I said That's okay Mark Because God believes in you Amen You know thank you Holy Spirit That was not me I'm not that clever But it was just And so then you know I would see him from time to time And then time went on And I was no longer at the cathedral No longer had the resources The property to continue this ministry to the homeless And I was so excited and so thrilled One day to walk into Starbucks And I was sitting there And I heard a guitar playing over in the corner And I turned to look And there was Mark This homeless man Playing the guitar And I went over to him and I said Mark He said pastor Sheila I haven't seen you in so long How are you? And I said Well I'm fine But how are you? And he said I found the Lord And I'm now playing in a worship band And I just Find out so exciting and encouraging And that's what made me think of this Never doubt the power of a positive word And a lot of times words are just like seeds You know We sow seeds But we never know where it's going to land We never know what fruit it's going to bear We never know how long it's going to take But we trust that God will do the good work Of completing the good work That he began when we release those words Of hope and encouragement Amen
Speaker 4 - Dr. Paul Hall / Pastor Joe Schofield
It's interesting that's what people lose Just before they commit suicide Is hope That's right Wait, wait, say that again The thing that people lose before they commit suicide Is hope Yeah All right All right, so Why did you play? What? Yeah So I guess I'm uh I'm impressed by Just the power As you mentioned already, right? Just a number of excuses A number of experiences you have If you're traveling speaking There are times when God kind of Really kind of boggles your brain Because I'll go someplace And it's like two or three years later Four years later And some persons walks up and talks about how amazing God spoke to him And blah when you said this said that I go Who are you? And it's something And there have been times when I'm really, really humble Because you know, you go someplace and you give a message And you realize you really, really messed it up Oh All of your notes and all of all kind of tangents And here's some young guy in a store Three or four years later with his wife and kids and swear How great God spoke to him through you And I'm married and I'm out of prison and blah And I'm telling you If you sit there and you go It's scary Because now you wonder what else have I said Like what's Thank you Yeah You're paranoid But it goes back to Proverbs, you know How many times does Proverbs talk about the time?
I mean that life and death is in the tone That the mouth of the righteous Are a fountain of life It gets all in on Proverbs 18, Proverbs 12, Proverbs 20 It's just as you said Doctor I mean it's we have the ability To produce fruit from our tongues That is good fruit Or we produce bad fruit And they both have an effect Yeah, the Lord has impressed upon me as a grandma
Speaker 7 - Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman
How important it is And these are all lessons that my father taught me I mean he drilled into us Never ever use a negative word Wow Yeah And because it's a word it's not a blessing If it's a negative word So when my first grandson was born and he was very still is very active I refuse to call him a handful I decided to call him my heartful I'm sorry Stefanie I was going to say, spirited lively I've had these same boys in my house, I'm pretty sure Right Yes, I'd raised four sons within seven born within seven years time And then my daughter-in-law, well this the same heartful He decided he wanted a sibling But because he was such a heartful His parents decided they were one and done They gave away everything But he kept he started praying for a sibling And It was just before COVID And then COVID hit And they said my son and daughter-in-law Maybe we should try and have him Maybe let's just see what happens Well, sure enough she went to the doctor and he said, yeah, you're pregnant mrs. Coleman Come back next month So she did There was kind of like whoa, whoa, we're pregnant. Oh now too She went back the next month and the doctor said, oh, oh Uh, there's twins Wins And they said come back next month Oh My son And my daughter-in-law were They were grappling with this she went back the next month The ultrasound technicians said I'm really sorry, mrs. Coleman. I have to get the doctor And the doctor came in and he said, you know, one was hiding behind the other.
There's triplets So now they have a heartful and triplets One in a million triplets during COVID And then the doctor said come back next month and my this is a true story my daughter-in-law said, no Every time I come back you add another baby So she they had two identical twin boys and they are both little tiger little tigga tigers Boom boom boom bouncing off of each other and then there's uh, chinsley grace who is the uh, the girl Who is fierce And that's just one of my family's She's gonna have to be fierce The heartful prayer The effectful prayer of a heartful I warn everybody I say if you asked jj to pray for you'd better have your seatbelt on because you're gonna get way more Wild beyond your wildest imagination, right that person of Ephesians 320 Now I know the next conversation here with my grandkids More free But the Lord has been also been impressing and through all of this he's been impressing upon me What my father taught me and yet I took for granted Right we do that as children But how important it is to release blessings Over our children and our grandchildren And especially releasing the blessing of knowing who they are their true identity in Christ And so I have my grandma's I am's I'll say repeat after me. I am ago. I am One in a million miracle because they are one in a million Miracle sorry for them to say And then I said to tinsley one night. I said tinsley Repeat after grandma. I am I am grandma Blessed and highly favored.
Blessed and highly flavored flavored tinsley what flavor are you? Well chocolate of course It's my favorite Then I said okay Well, what do you think God's favorite flavor is? And she says well chocolate of course And I said well Don't you think maybe all of the flavors are God's favorite because he made them all? Hmm. She said that sounds like God And I said do you think that maybe all of the children are God's favorite because he made them all Hmm sounds like God grandma So that's what I've been doing it been you know trying to teach uh the children That they too and but the first the one I say how them say all the time is repeat after me.
I am I am The most be I am the beloved son or daughter This is that identity confusion, right? I am the beloved son the beloved daughter of the most high God And today's day and age that the identity of the children has been so terribly attacked. We know that and We as adults And pastors And grandparents we can call it we can pray over them. We can tell them who they are But how they're going to need to know how to claim it for themselves as well When we're not around when we're not around will they will they know How to counter the lives of the world and be able to say no no, that's not who I am I know who I am. I am the beloved child of the most high God Amen Let's go ahead step
Speaker 5 - Stefanie Thayer / Pastor Joe Schofield / Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman
Around here. We have sort of a little grassroots Feeling prayer group that the Lord has sprung up and it blesses me immensely and i'm always Just amazed at what the Holy Spirit can do, you know, it's like oh you have little faith um, but one thing that i've noticed is the enemy Plans to us when we're very young so most of us are believing something That someone said to us in an off-comment, you know Oh, why are you always so loud? Why are you know, you're not very smart and then a child believes i'm stupid their whole life, right? So it's the thing the broken thing that they Repeat and I really Is fantastic at getting to us when we're young and going oh that was enough that'll just disrupt the purpose that the Lord has for you And so uh, we always talk about, you know, what's the lie that you believe that don't go to that but Affirmations which a lot of people don't like affirmations and I love affirmations. I say how Everywhere they are scriptural truth, right?
So exactly what you're saying you do with your grandkids is Say those scriptures over yourself and we need to say them out loud It rewind wires your brain when you speak it out for them. You're also taking authority You have a authority, right? And so our words are so powerful and It just goes back to The negative we remember how often do we remember the positive that we spoke in the last Right, we need so many more positive words We come or ask the negative Yeah, absolutely. Yes When I worked with single adults. Oh who I'm sorry dainer up something Okay, when I worked with single adults You're as past with different areas of the church all these years They were the ones that seemed to really wrestle with this one of the things they would say was what you were saying step two that when they were young They never had things you were able to share Dr.
With them, but I had Somewhere around 600 or 700 single adults and they were just one minute They'd be up and they rule like you were saying they were told this they were younger And this one gals she kept trying to help she was a single mom and we had a lot of inner Ministries that took care of families and everything but she would always say well It's okay. It's had a rough week, but I'm just a sinner saved by grace And finally I remembered the truth song that I've been humming to my mind Ever since truth was singing and I said you are a sinner saved by grace, but don't you know the flip side of that coin Little children rejoins you're a child of the king So if you're feeling here defeated just you are a sinner saved by grace Well because of that grace you're above it. You're a child of the king So get out of the front yard get into the courthouse and ask God what you want him to do And watch what he can do. So it's really true. Words are so important and so simple.
We miss it so much bias And I you know one of the things that uh we try to impress upon parents is just how back to your poor doctor how important it is Uh, and but then you and you have scripture texts. One of the things in Colossians three Uh, what the what he says there says fathers, you know in that's words Don't uh speak harshly to your kids and be critical of them on and on Uh, and then if he's uh phoenix six Uh with the fathers, uh, don't exact spray your children And each one of those each one of those texts if you know, it basically breaks them down It has this idea of not being this constantly Pointing out the negative and constantly writing them and then saying harsh things to them And you go why is that listed three different times? Why does he give instructions on that? It must be something very important about it. Yeah Well, I was blessed to have a father Really real I and you know, I the longer I live the more I realize How very in fact I say to people God must love me a lot But he loves all of his children the same I know that but he blessed I know I've been very blessed But you know the scripture also says to whom much is given much is required So I just always hope and pray that I will be a faithful steward Have all that my father taught me and all that he poured into me Engage to me that I will turn you know give it back Out to others through my various multi many ministries that I actively partner with But also I love being able to brag on my dad my daddy You know, I when I was a little girl.
I remember being at five years old saying to my friends What is your daddy do and it was a setup? How manipulative for a five-year-old because I knew they would tell me what their daddy did And then they would turn around and say and what is your daddy do? And that's what I wanted them to I was fishing I was fishing for And it never failed and I go oh my daddy's pastor I was just always and I and I never and never stopped being proud of the fact that my dad Was a pastor and I loved Seeing I got a front row seat Just seeing how powerful God our God is But I also know that there's there's so much hope And I want to go back to that word hope Because like the doctor said, you know When we when people lose hope completely then they give up on life And they choose death over life And they don't see a reason to continue living And we know That um you put up there. I didn't know you're going to do that But I'm glad you did it was a book the Lord had me write Almost four years ago the heart of a warrior delivering the children of the world for Christ And when the Lord gave me that assignment I didn't understand it And so I went I stood I went to my macbook and started to write but before I did I said Lord What is going on? with the children of the world And having my doctorate in education.
I was started to look and dig into the research And the one statistic that absolutely broke my heart in fact My daughter in law happened to come into my house at the very moment. I had my head on my on my arms on my keyboard Weeping and she's like what in the world? And I saw I apologize, but the statistic was That suicide rates had tripled amongst 14 year olds You know And now of course that rate is smaller than other ages but nevertheless one Is way way too many and the fact that it was tripling at all Is heartbreaking but we That's what we need to do as Christ Love had ones and his warriors, you know, anybody wants to pray for children Is to say well, that's we Then we know what to do we know what to do about that. We have the solution To this missing hope We have the gift We have it and it's right here That's right Everywhere I go everywhere I go, you know, I feel the Holy Spirit will have me release words Uh to people doesn't matter Who they are. I mean even And When I was I go to Stater Bros..
I don't know if they had those in your state But I always tell my church and my other church Stater Bros. because I'm always praying for people and talking to people in Stater Bros., but this one Young man was checking me out checking me out. I check that sounds really bad. He was He was resounding And no not I'm reeling it back in But he placed on the machine though scale I have purchased yeah some black plums And I heard a medic Small and dark like my heart I said, I'm sorry. What did you say?
I thought me I thought surely you heard wrong He said small and dark like my heart And he looks like he was Binary maybe transitioning From different things in his outward appearance I looked at his name tag And I have found that whenever I call Especially and I we run it I ran into that a lot here in southern, California I don't know if you do, but we run into it. It's very pervasive and God loves them so much. They're his beloved children It's identity theft by the enemy Mm-hmm. Well, and I called him by his name. I said, I sick You're named after an important After an important person a really important man And he said he said no, I'm not and I said Yes, you are you were named after Isaac And he said I'm not important to anybody And I said well That's not true You are very important to God And that's all I said That's all I said And then I went out and did you know left because I knew he had a line of people waiting, right?
But I always every time I can I still see him all the time And I and I've noticed ever since then He's smiling and he's laughing and I keep and every time he does I pray for him and I go I go Lord deliver Isaac Complete the good work that you already begun and I said, you know And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, you know But that's again that's never and never doubt the power of a positive word We just drop it and we sew it we sew it we sew it and my dad used to say Anybody can count The seeds in one apple, but only God can count the apples in one seed I will still that one. Let's see Yeah, you go right ahead I a lot of people steal dad stuff. I hear all the time And then I and I never take offense because I always realized it came from Holy Spirit That ever that was just a steward of it while he was alive and I love to hear here continue so But I'll give him credit. I'll give him credit well once But if you think of that principle Think of how many think of your words, right? Yeah, right how many see how many apples how much fruit Is in that one word that one seed that you have released and it and it can't be planted It can't be sewn until you speak it out loud And when we do that we bring God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven That's how we do that I think people are more willing to talk than we give them credit for you know if we're just engaging them a conversation
Speaker 4 - Dr. Paul Hall / Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman / Pastor Joe Schofield
And I think I think sometimes just a couple of things My wife and mother-in-law and I were in salveying this past weekend and They were in a store shopping and I was kind of standing in the doorway and I walked out because Just to get some fresh air and there was a group of six people walking by right as I came out the door and there were three couples and This woman I just looked up and I heard this woman say I don't even like you Just like that and I looked at her and I said, I don't even know what I did And you know the other four people just cracked up, you know, because it was like really funny Well, she didn't understand what she did at all, but when she got to the next Door of the store she turned around and she yelled. I mean she says I didn't mean you And I and I was laughing it was you know, it was just a lot of fun Um, and I think sometimes our words go much further than we give them credit for Or we even stop to think about just a question of you Sheila I know that there are a lot of Preachers who? Oftentimes don't preach what used to be called hell fire and damnation etc etc And the and the preachers Get a lot of criticism And oftentimes well, they just preach a feel good gospel, you know I'm sure you heard that more than a few times. Okay, and One of the things you said about your dad the last time we had john I kind of like for you to repeat that to where his heart really was he didn't let those words get inside his heart Uh, he saw something bigger than the criticism that was leveled against him Did you kind of speak to that a little bit? Well, I would love to thank you for the opportunity I was in high school And I was hearing through the grapevine Um from other pastors in the community Who were having criticisms like that of my father and um So I went to dad and I said dad did you know that they're all talking about you this way And it bothered me But he said oh shila that doesn't bother me He said, you know, I know where all those other pastors are going They're going to go to heaven.
They're saved, you know, he said but I want the people To listen to me give The message of the gospel. I want to reach as many people as the unbelievers as I can My heart is for the unbelievers not for the church And that was that was his call his call was to reach the uncharged And boy, I will have I you know, I think history will tell you that there are few pastors who were as successful In accomplishing that particular goal Then my father my father my that was his call and got equipped him and he showed him and it was but it was his heart And you know it grew it. I don't know if I mentioned this last time it was it came because And dad was called To start to plant a Dutch reformed Calvinistic Calvinist church in garden Grove, California Well, if you know what the doctrine is of that denomination, right, you know You know Sinners in the hands of an angry God, right Some of that they're right there. That was how dad was raised And that was what he came to that was the message he came to give But then but that was not really a church for the unchurched he would he thought he was called at that time To find all of the Dutch reformed people that were in the area and be a church for them like a club But he realized quickly there weren't any And he's like well now what do I do? And the beautiful thing is that His uncle my great uncle Henry Had been a missionary to china And dad remembered his uncle And he used to say to him.
He'd say he called him bob He'd say bob You know the first thing I had to do when I got to china Was to give them rice because that's what they needed most He Said they were going to hear the message until I first gave them rice And dad was like rice Oh I have to get I have to give them rice That means I have to find out what it is they need And he began knocking on every single door at that he could and he'd knock on the door and they'd answer he'd go Hi, I'm a new pastor in town. I just want to know what is it you need? What is it you need? And he came up with this line maybe you've heard it Find a need and fill it And that became he began to then say okay now I now know what the rice is and he realized that he was not called to build a church He was called to be a missionary And I really believe that today God is Looking for churches who really carry the heart of being a missionary Don't you think some of the harshest criticism comes from inside our own house You know, I mean, isn't that the way it seems, you know that I think it's fascinating. I it brings up one other really quick thing I was 16 years old preaching in the rescue mission in san of arbor and I was just in the middle of where I was going and this guy goes shut up And I looked at him.
I said what he said shut up I said Excuse me. He said shut up. We don't Eat until you shut up. So shut up And I was thinking I wonder how well it would work to eat first and then Give the message because those you know, they've already seen and I've never forgotten that you know However many years 60 years ago that was now But you know shut up shut up. We don't need to use shut up.
So shut up You know, I think there's some real there's some real practical things that we can learn from people who Well, and it's sorry. I don't mean to interrupt, but I'm not I'm remembering what Jesus did right when the people were hungry He fed them He fed them. What do they need? They needed to be fed. They needed to be healed.
They needed to be delivered And they needed to know who they are they needed to know That God loves them. God loves them. I think that message alone You know just it and surprises me how much that people are able to Respond to just that alone I need to plug my laptop in it says I'm I'm on low battery So I'm gonna I'm gonna grab a quick a minute. Okay. I'll be right back All I know that when I am fed I am a much nicer human and I listen I We spent some time doing there too and the fear was if they fed them first they would leave when hearing message That's what Jesus did the last supper normally the Jewish custom was to another room A man servant would wash your feet Get your hands before you go sit and eat There was nowhere there What happened after supper?
Jesus washed his own feet So he feeds them an example Yes I remember some groups Paul you get you'll probably already remember some that may have been some that felt that way because They would say things like well, they're social gospel, you know, they just you're gonna feed them and clothe them They're gonna go to hell no way And the more I as a young pastor way years ago They did Jesus had them do exactly what you're all saying And the thing was Love speaks louder than your words If they feel it and everything about your dad every time I wish I could have met him I missed what great blessing in my life, but Everything I ever heard him say the books that I read I bet you remember some of his books Paul The books that I read I always felt his heart coming out That transported the words that he was saying That seemed to come down with a big hand of God just handing them to us And there's no way you could miss how much God loved you And that you were very special in that he had a plan for you And that there was just no other way except to find Jesus And he will meet you and by the way, I'm going to be with you too I'm going with you every day that I can there was a big cornerstone in singles ministry also because singles When they first came out with all the books you remember back with britany wood some of these other guys Yeah, there was all these programs in this that near they didn't want that They just wanted somebody to say what you say to your children And I'm thinking back to the hundreds of them that were so special in my life and saying These guys would say you know nobody ever cares about anything and I do it's back to what you said just where your dad treated them and uh Hey, I'm here and I'm sure how can I help you? I'm right here to help you So yeah, I missed out. I'm gonna see your dad someday. I'm gonna be here, but I can't wait to see him there Well, I missed him. I missed my mom, but I also know That now that they're both there heaven just actually feels more real to me and it feels nearer It feels like that veil is much thinner They just feel like they're that's what I love about the fact that they are there so I That's why we did workiness of a kind of a geeky doctor, but um I had this a symphony today.
So I'm looking at one of the books and let's step fly berry And I realized that you know phaegeans have talked about the armor of God And this port which we've been talking about and I'm looking at the word I go have always thought sword was a really weird word because it's got word in store Is that a coincidence or a Well, you can always read my book the heart of a warrior because I talk all about that Yeah, and about the sword, you know, in fact one of the chapters is Um, my sword is uh, so when I forget exact verbiage on but my sword is sharpened keep you yeah Keep your sword unsheathed and sharpened. That's how it goes. Keep your sword unsheathed and sharpened and there's so many scriptures about um flaming swords and angels with flaming swords And so swords of fire and there's certain verses where it talks about where the swords are really unsheathed And one of the things that the Lord told me to include in the book is when you have a sword that's unsheathed It means I mean business I'm going to use this And I'm going to wield it and so I do I will take out my sword and I go I actually go like this And I'm sharpening you I'm sharpening you no weapon formed against me. Well prospered This is I sharpen it on the word. I was sharpened the sword on the word No weapon was formed against me.
Well prospered no Um, no weapon formed again. Yeah, the greater is he who is in me then you who's in the world And what the enemy means for harm the Lord will use for good. So take that boom You Know that to the enemy right But I only have one enemy And I make that really clear and all the teaching and the training that I and I do a lot of teaching and training to pastors and ministry leaders on this subject Um, but I always say remember who the real enemy is I do not have one single human enemy and I've had some people who in all anybody else would say That's an enemy Sheila And I said that but that's no I don't focus on them. I forgive. I choose to forgive I love I choose to love because I know that's what God asked me to do I refuse to judge because if I'm judging them, I'm judging myself Because I'm comparing them right then I'm saying oh, I'm better than you Who am I to do that the Lord the Lord made them It's only he can only he can say Who are value because judging is saying the value right you're putting a value on someone I refuse to do that.
I just refuse to do that and so Um, but that's that's what so it's only the um You know the enemy and his demonic spiritual evil entities. They're the only enemy that I have and they're enough Yeah, right I'll go back to proverbs again Uh where he says that the um the reckless or harsh words Or rash words I like her. They're like the thrust of a sword And when some of the verdant said it purest is like a sword Um, so I mean the instruction is you don't use a sword On then on other people Paul says we use that yet Satan itself So our harsh words and our aren't for people there for Satan And the our the kind words are the ones which speak to other people Uh and even instructions about you know that we're to Uh, let our conversation always be uh, what's the Colossians? Filling grace Yes season with salt fill the grace Uh, so that you may know and have an answer for everyone Right so all full of grace season with salt It should always be to lift it up always lift people up not to tear them down Amen It wouldn't it and I'll I'll confess that I often I've struggled I've struggled throughout my life with that but that one always because you want to give people straight and tell them And you're correct wrong
Speaker 7 - Dr. Sheila Schuller Coleman
So my dad would say you tell them They you speak to them as if they are Being the kind of person you want them to be like my little grandson. You're a Heartful for me. Oh, you are and so I've got this so one of the one of the triplets the little boys He has a real hard time with his hands And so I said to him would he let me take those hands. I said, I'm so glad that you use those hands to help people And never hurt people. I'm so glad you do that.
See now. I'm that's what you know, we are it's what is it? They call it self-fulfilling prophecy, right? And if there's a lot of truth to that in the spiritual realm There's a lot of truth to that in the psychological realm because we are mind soul and body, you know spirit And so body was that but so that's what that's what we can do, you know, so But I just want to I don't know if any of your listeners today In closing because I know we're I don't know how much time we have but and my heart was really Thinking that with what we're going through in these days that Just to encourage people And so I wanted to release some words of encouragement which was just the two of the books. Well, I wrote I was dad's ghost writer Um for use of a better lack of a better word He had no time to take his messages and put them into a book that could be published So that's what he gave to me as a young mommy with babies.
I don't know how I did it but we did And the first one he had me do is tough times never lasts but tough people do And I just want to you know, I just want to encourage people with that one That this is that to be encouraged Our God is faithful no matter what you're going through He is always there with you. He will never leave you He will never forsake you. He's always got his eye on you. He never sleeps He loves you and he's got you And he'll never let you go And there was a time when I had to make a some very very difficult decisions at the Christalcatee drill And one day I called my husband. I said Jim come and take me to the to the garden There's a little prayer garden at the um St.
Joseph's Hospital so it's a little bit by the nuns with a nun convent But it's open to people and I would go there and pray and so my husband knew that so he Picked me up was around the end of the evening and he drove me over there waited for me in the car and I literally ran to the garden I'm running to obisarms and I just sat there in the bench And immediately I heard The Lord sing over me now. I've got a tickle in my throat. I mean, I'll try and sing Fear not this is what the Lord said me. I am with you O being not dismayed For I am your God I will still give you aid I'll strengthen and help you I'll cause you to stand Up held by my righteous Nipotent hand And I was just like Oh I jumped up that was all it took I went skipping down the sidewalk and my husband's watching me from the car and i'm going Fear not I am with the O being not dismayed for I am your God I will still give you aid I'll strengthen and help you and cause you to stand Up held by my righteous All powerful Powerful hand And I know as I know as I know as I know That my God can do anything And he wants to do anything For those who are listening tonight and who need him to do whatever that anything is Because in that book the Lord also told me to he said you've got one more chapter 10 If little faith can move mountains what can limit this faith And Then he said shila and want you to begin to pray and ask me and he's given me permission to other people to pray the same prayer Lord Give me the same faith in you that you have in yourself So when I look at the mountains in my life I go can God move that mountain Whether it's cancer whatever it is Can God move that mountain? We know the answer to that And then I go Lord I will have a same faith in you that you have in yourself I choose to have that much faith because see my dad was Fearless fearless faith And I was always the scaredy cat She Shai hid behind his robe Until God asked me to do heart of a warrior And that changed my life completely but Then so and so that's how I pray now and I believe I believe that my God can do anything that Anybody listening to us needs God knows that you need May Wait Let's have an invitation.
Hey, man. Let's go. That's wonderful Sheila, how can uh If people they're praying about things in their lives. We all know what each of us How can they get a hold of you is there an address and we're and we're not pressed for timing We still we still have 15 or 20 minutes But before I forget if you got an address you would want to give out if they want to get books and things Yeah, yeah, hope center Oc.org Hope center oc the oc stands for of Christ or oc for orange county as hope center Oc Dot org That's the name of my church and it's got an email And it'll come to me it get they all get to me any email. That's the best way to do it They can reach me that way Great And i'll get back to them.
I always do I love doing it. I love being a pastor. I love praying with people I can't tell you how many people I pray with a day It's I lose track of it to be honest with you, but I never grow tired of it because There's something so beautiful about being Oh, there we are That's my church hope center of Christ putting the center of Christ putting Christ in the center of our hearts, right? There's that yeah, there we are My beautiful little church and those are just a few of the Ministries we partner with we partner with so many many now. We don't have room for them on the website But that's the fun part.
Are you kidding me? Like I love to brag about Since I've got time i'll brag some more about my dad's because I like to brag about my earthly father and my heavenly father but One of the after I wrote the book I was published in September of 2022 so four years ago coming up And then in january the Lord said she'll I want you to gift Mail sheep and a female sheep to a poor village in africa And so I have people in my church here from kenya and I went to them first They checked in with the people the back home In kenya and they said pastor we're sorry. They don't need sheep I'm like oh, I'm trying to be obedient Lord. Nobody seems to need sheep. Now.
What do you want me to do? And then I met bill and judy henderson there on that website storm shelter ministries And they have orphanages and churches and schools in kenya And I said to judy. I said judy. Do you buy any chance needs sheep? She said Sheila we've been praying for a sheep ministry Isn't that isn't that beautiful and we had been praying because as part of the book We have been praying for the orphaned and the hungry And then so then I said to her well judy how much are they she said $50 I said that's it So I Spent mode $200.
I was like why do two sheep? I'll do three females and one male And so we sent them And I got a video back of four women in the village with these with a sheep on a rope and then um So then I was six months later. I was flying to Kenya I went and I saw the children And I saw the women and I saw the sheep And do you know that they and then my church sent me with all these Kenyan shillings And then so I said buy more sheep so they bought more sheep and every now and then I'd send more I'd send money more sheep buy more sheep buy more sheep. Well now one woman has a cow And I was telling this story to a mother at a little league game Because my grandsons he's in a game tonight as you speak and A big huge tournament, but anyway, I was talking to this one mom and telling her all about this And I said, oh, I'm sorry. I went on and on and on And she said no, no, no, it's fascinating The next day we had a game because we'd won the night before And that's how it is a tournament's right And I she came over and she slipped a money into my hand And she whispered in my ear.
She said buy more sheep It was a hundred dollar bill hundred dollar bill You just think about what that can do what that can mean And so that's and that's just one of about 20 ministries that and I and we actively Partner with them. I show up. I go places And as a pastor It's so easy for pastors to be isolated and with their church But when you partner with other missions and other ministries and then and then now I go and I gather pastors as well as well as these ministries and um and I'm training them and it's just I am just having the time of my life. I Is this it's just fun fun fun Well, I missed of all the fun you're having And we pray for you person What are some of your needs that we can pray for well? That's a good well pray for the property The property we're currently Meeting at is beautiful.
You saw it. It's lovely, but it's a wedding chapel and we only have We lease it and we only have it for four hours a week And there's nothing for children It has I am so limited and the Lord has told me that he said shila you cannot fulfill The assignments that I've tasked you with on that property And so he's promised us property So if you could just join me in praying for that And i'm praying believing. I know i've seen it happen Time after time after time after time where God has just given property to churches And um so that we can fulfill you know, it's his vision his provision, right? I didn't make that one up and that's not dad's either, but I don't know who it is But I just told somebody else I suppose Sorry, but um, yeah if you that's probably My because the Lord has shown me The minis one of the ministries he wants us to do is to partner with a There's a ministry called his nesting place in long beach And it's a it's a home For a crisis pregnancies and they take in they go to the abortion clinics and i and we partner with love life Where they go and stand outside the plan parenthood and i do that other churches do that we go together We stand and we pray this second saturday of every month And so then you but then you have to Help them you can't just pray for them to not you know But we pray for the workers and we pray for the for the parents and we pray for the city But then so what happens is then this the people that we're doing it allen judy howard a different Judy howard they started this his nesting place 37 years ago and the number thousands Of babies and mothers babies they took the mothers pregnant into this crisis pregnancy center And then they the babies were born and they Went back there with their babies to live until they could and help them get on their feet And it's such a beautiful ministry and the Lord has asked me said I want you to Um on the property i'm going to give you he said I want you to do a his nesting place in oc And the ad jumped one from the one that's in long beach And there's there's other and to start feeding the homeless again like I was able to do And to do a school for the children again And it goes on and on and I just my heart Burns and yearns to be able to do the ministry that God Has placed there You know It's uh, it's a beautiful burden, but uh, yeah, that's it Amen Mama's gonna pray for you here. We wish we got a few minutes Okay Don't want to come tonight
Speaker 3 - Melba Schofield

Craig if you if you could pray doctor for um For BBS Radio TV. I mean they're going through some incredible things God's opening doors Would you just pray that they be able to financially and then step would you pray? Maybe say a word and pray because we could use the help to and on the program where we are right now So that would be great and lift them together. But it's for sure Okay your Lord just thank you for this time together um just It's so wonderful to see how you use each of our gifts or they just ask that you encourage us sitting here and anyone listening word that is Struggling in their ministry space where we know how faithful you are and how good you are and we can't always see What's ahead?
