We are talking about this series called Hope for America. Now we come to a time where we really have to stand back and do an honest evaluation of what is going on with America, biblically speaking.

Sometimes it is easy to look around the world and make judgments, corrections, and criticisms of what we see. But it is very important that we as believers look to the Word of God to find out what God actually says about humanity. What does He say about nations, about communities, and about His relationships specifically with those particular people?

In Romans chapter 1, we see that God helps us understand His expectations of humanity. Today we are talking about America's road to ruin. We are beginning in Romans chapter 1, verse 18.

I am reminded of what George Gallup, the pollster, recently said. He said, "Americans revere the Bible, but by and large do not read it. And because they do not read it, they become a nation of biblical illiterates."

There was another survey done not long ago that said most Americans, and even many Christians, cannot name the Ten Commandments or even the books of the Bible. Among high school students, George Barna did a poll and discovered that 12 percent of American high school students think Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. Another survey discovered that over 50 percent of graduating high school seniors thought that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife.

That certainly tells you that people do not really know what is going on in the Bible. That is why we have programs like this. The King Is Coming helps you know what is found right here in the Scripture.

So, are there any prophetic clues that America is on a path to ruin? Let us look at Romans chapter 1 today and talk about these different stages of God's divine judgment on a nation or on a country - stages of ruin and divine abandonment.

The Apostle Paul was a brilliant thinker. Paul was educated under Gamaliel, which was like the Harvard Law School of the day. He was an incredibly intelligent man. God the Holy Spirit, working with Paul's existing intellect, gave us such a logical progression in Romans chapter 1 that it helps us understand what is going on in the world. It explains why the world is as it is.

Let us begin in verse 18. It says, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and His divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse."

Here is the first principle: God's revelation that He has given to humanity is suppressed. Mankind suppresses that which he knows.

You may say, "Jeff, how do we know that we know?" He tells us here. First of all, there is internal evidence. It says that God puts this knowledge of Him within us. It comes like a computer's basic operating system. It just comes with the package.

Over in Romans chapter 2, verses 14 and 15, we know that God has also placed what is called a conscience within every person. That conscience tells us the basic difference between right and wrong. We know this because no matter what culture you go to on the planet, whether it is in the middle of New York City or all the way down to the tribes of Papua New Guinea, there is a sense of inherent right and wrong.

People know, "I should not steal. I should not kill. I should not take someone's wife." Those kinds of things are embedded within us. Basically, some of the Ten Commandments are embedded within us: a basic knowledge of right and wrong.

It is like passing through those metal detectors at the airport. Your conscience beeps when you are in the process of doing something wrong. It is also possible that a conscience can be what the Bible calls seared, which means it does not work properly anymore. There is a malfunction in the conscience. This explains why people can do bad things, evil things, horrible things, and not even feel guilty about it, because their consciences have been seared.

So there is internal evidence. But God also says in this passage that there is external evidence as well. Notice what He says in verse 18: it is revealed from heaven. Then, over in verse 20, He says that since the creation of the world, God's invisible attributes - the things about God that are true that we cannot see - can still be seen.

What are they? It says that He is eternal, He is powerful, and He is divine. Psalm 19 says that the heavens declare the handiwork and the glory of God. I love what Charles Spurgeon used to say. He said, "The stars are God's traveling preachers." They travel across the sky every night.

God has put within the vision of every human on the earth evidence of Himself. Think about this: before there were city lights, everybody saw the stars at night. Everybody saw the planets. Everybody saw the galaxy. You have probably been somewhere - maybe in a mountain in Colorado, or somewhere out in Wyoming, or somewhere in the country where there are no lights - and the stars are so bright that you can see so much. That causes you to contemplate the One who created those things. That is the knowledge of God.

But it says here that they suppress that knowledge. Even though there are millions and billions of literally blinking neon signs in the universe saying that God is real, they choose to suppress that. They want to come up with their own explanations. It says in verse 18 that they suppress the truth in unrighteousness. In other words, they try to bury the truth about God and create their own truth.

So instead of God being Creator, they make some invisible, mindless process, like evolution, be the creator. Instead of God speaking the universe into existence, which is what Genesis 1 tells us happened, they want to begin with some sort of cosmic Big Bang that came from a dream, from materials that we do not know the origin of. Even scientists, including atheists and evolutionists today, will say that they do not know where those materials came from. The Bible tells us where everything came from: it came from God.

Here is the point. There is a Creator, there is a creation, and there is a conscience. God says, "I let everybody in on that knowledge - everybody on the planet."

Now he goes on to a second principle, a stage that happens when we reject and suppress this truth. It leads to the second stage: God's rule is refused. We refuse to let God rule over us.

Look at what he says in verses 21 and 22. "For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened."

Follow the logic here. If you do not believe that there is a God, if you refuse to acknowledge what God says in His Word about who He is, then where are you left? You are just left to yourself. If there is no God giving you information about where we all came from, our origins, our nature, who we are, and what we are supposed to be, then you have to come up with your own explanations.

What happens is that we seek truth, but truth is hidden from us because we slam the door to the only truth God has given us: that general revelation called creation and conscience. When you shut that door, you have to replace truth with made-up truth, with feelings, and with relativism. In other words, truth becomes basically what everybody believes or what everybody is talking about at that time. It changes. It flows back and forth.

This is why we have some of the things we have today, where truth is seen as relative and not objective. People consciously reject God's evidence that He put in the sky for them. They refuse to know Him, they refuse to honor Him, and they refuse to let that God rule over them. So they become, as the word says here, futile in their speculations.

Think about it logically. If you admit there is a God, that He is your Creator, and that there is basic right and wrong that comes from Him, and then you do not follow up on that by asking, "Who is this God? How can I know Him? How can I submit to Him?" then that God becomes a threat to self. Because He is a threat to self, you deny that He is there or that He wants to be involved in your life, and you make up your own reality.

We are living in a day where people are making up their own realities. Literally, they are creating universes in their own minds, universes that do not actually exist. It says they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened.

If an individual, community, nation, or America refuses to respond to the simple light that is obvious, God says it will result in an even deeper darkness of the heart. There is a cause-and-effect relationship here. If you take a hammer and hit your thumb, there is going to be an effect. The cause is the hammer; the effect is the pain and whatever might come out of your mouth when that happens.

There is also cause and effect in our relationship with God. If God gives us a gift, and that gift is knowledge about Him in general revelation - the stars of the sky, the universe, the earth He made, humanity, conscience, and all those things - then when we consciously refuse those things, God says, "I am going to take the light you had from Me and begin to dim it. I am going to begin to turn the lights down on your understanding of what is real."

Think about that. The penalty for rejecting God's initial light is being removed from understanding reality. That gives you discernment and insight into why the world is the way it is right now. The world has rejected God as Creator, and its speculations have become completely futile.

This is similar to what we see in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, where it says that in the last days, God Himself will send a great delusion upon planet Earth. Why would God do something like that? It tells us in the very verse. It is upon those who refuse to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ and refuse to accept His love.

People talk about free will. Here is what free will is all about. We have the freedom to choose God and accept what He has given us, or we have the freedom to say no to it. But if we reject what God has given us, we begin to lose freedom. Our freedom to choose becomes even more shackled and chained than it was before. Our freedom to think in areas of truth becomes more and more limited because we have limited our exposure to God and our acceptance of His truth.

What is really interesting in Romans chapter 1 is that after having your heart darkened, and after having your spirit and understanding skewed, something happens to everyone who does that. Verse 22 says that professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

This means there is freedom, but there is not freedom from the consequences. Just like if you are a parent and you say to your son or daughter, "You have the freedom to obey or disobey, but if you disobey, there will be consequences." That is what a loving parent would do. If you are playing on a sports team, you have the freedom to run out of bounds or to hit somebody where you should not hit somebody. You have the freedom to do that, but there will be a penalty.

God gives the whole world freedom because God did not invent us as robots, causing every person to automatically have a relationship with Him. What kind of relationship would that be? It would be like a guy who wanted a relationship with a girl but wanted her simply to agree with everything he said without having a choice. That is not a relationship. A relationship means that love is going both ways.

It says here that when God turns down the lights, we are essentially in a dark room. If you are in a dark room and you cannot see anything, and you get up in the middle of the night, what are you doing? You are feeling around. You are shuffling because you do not want to bump into a wall, bump into a doorjamb, or hit your toe on something.

That is what is happening. People are walking around in the dark because they have rejected God. Then they experience that darkness, and in the darkness they begin to invent what is in the room. They cannot see the truth that is out there, so they simply make it up on their own.

Think about what people have done with this. They have made up their own version of who God is, even many gods. They have made up their own version of who humanity is and what humanity is all about. We have redefined humanity completely now. We have redefined humanity's origins. We have said we were not created in the image of God, as Genesis 1:26 says, but that we are simply evolved creatures. How we get a soul and a spirit out of that, I do not know. There is no credible scientific evidence to prove that claim, but they still hang on to that narrative. Why? Because it is their only hope.

They think that by hanging on to this narrative of origins, somehow they are going to find dignity, worth, meaning, and purpose. But if you do not know where you came from, you do not know who you are, and you do not know where you are going, how can you have that sense of worth and meaning?

So they have redefined God. They have redefined humanity. They have redefined reality. They have redefined gender. They have redefined marriage. They have redefined relationships. They have redefined truth. In essence, they are saying to God, "We do not want You involved in our lives. We want to push You out of the room. We want to shut the door, and we want to do our own thing."

God, in a progressive sequence here in Romans chapter 1, is giving humanity what it wants. We come to verse 22: professing themselves to be wise, they became fools. Here is the progression: you reject God, you think up your own reality, and then you get to the point where you think you are actually smarter than God and smarter than the Word of God.

This word "fools" here is the Greek word moros. You may say, "Jeff, that sounds like a word I know. It sounds like the word moron." It does. There was a psychologist by the name of Goddard at the beginning of the last century who was searching for a way to describe feeble-minded people, or people whose minds did not work right. He took this Greek word moros and coined the English word moron.

You may ask, "Jeff, are you saying that people who do not subscribe to God, believe in God, and follow God, but instead follow their own way, are morons?" No, I am not saying that at all - but God is. God is saying that. Who could be a bigger moron than someone who thinks they are smarter than God? That is really the epitome of being moronic.

These people have sunk to a level where they become feeble-minded. Their minds and brains no longer function as they should. Think about how critical that is. When you reject God, as we see in Romans 1, you experience a mental shutdown. You can still think in terms of engineering, arts, sports, music, and all those things. But as it relates to God and truth, your mind does not work right anymore.

This is why it is important to believe when God gives evidence. He is not just giving it for fun. He is giving it so we can know Him, enjoy Him, live with Him, walk with Him, worship Him, and grow in Him.

These people have reached the point where they have completely rejected God's rule. Now there is one more area Paul covers in this first part of leading to a ruined life, and it is verse 23. Not only is God's rule refused, but God's rightful worship is replaced.

Paul gets spiritual here in verse 23. He says, "They exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed animals, and crawling creatures." In essence, they worship the creature rather than the Creator. They worship the creation rather than the Creator.

This certainly speaks about the many animist religions that are out there today and were in the ancient world, those who worshiped statues made of half man and half bird, those who worship cows, or those who venerate different kinds of animals that they think may be reincarnated ancestors. It says here that they take true religion and replace it with worshiping the creation.

Even right now, with what we are seeing in climate hysteria, we are placing the earth front and center. When you go on the World Economic Forum's website, you find that they call it Mother Earth, saying we must do anything to serve and save Mother Earth. Forget about people. In fact, people are dispensable. It is the planet we must serve.

This is a satanic reversal of what God says is to happen. Adam was given dominion over the earth in Genesis 1. We are certainly to be good stewards of the earth, but never to venerate or worship the earth or anything in it.

Here is why: even with our minds darkened, even with our sinful natures, we are still natural-born worshipers. We have to worship something. We have to give a sense of adoration and allegiance to something out there. If we are not doing it to God, then we give it to ourselves, which is also part of creation, or we give it to some other object or some other person.

Sometimes we worship our relationships. We can also create religions that basically worship and venerate the planet itself, and that is exactly what is happening here.

What is really sad about this finite thinking about God is that when Paul was on Mars Hill, he saw this. He saw all these idols and the worshiping of different creatures and creations. He said that perhaps they might seek God, that perhaps they might even grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from any one of us. Acts 17:27 says God is here, and He has shown Himself to you through creation and through your conscience.

We see the natural revelation God has given to mankind. We see the natural consequence of rejecting Him. Do you see how this is taking a dip for the worse? Do you see how it is turning southward, how it is turning toward more and more darkness, how it is turning more and more inward, and how this is leading to ruin?

When this darkness settles in, what happens when you are in a dark room or a dimly lit room? Your eyes adjust. In the same way, our spirits and souls adjust to the darkness. We get comfortable in the darkness. If anybody comes in and turns the light on, we reject that. We hide ourselves from the light because we love the darkness more than the light.

I look at this and say, this certainly describes America today. We have pushed God to the margins. We have told Him, "You cannot be the Creator in our schools, universities, communities, media, and movies. We are going to take those things away from You, God, and we are going to take charge of them ourselves."

Clearly, clearly, we are on the fast track on the road to ruin. If we do not turn around, then we are going to find ourselves like a roller coaster. You go to the top of that roller coaster, and then gravity takes over, my friend, and it is all downhill from there.

That is exactly where we are in our country today. My friend, our only hope is Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can bring salvation, light, and understanding to our world today. If you do not know Him, I urge you to put your faith in Him today.
