Introspective yet explosive, cathartic yet calm, MUKI (pronounced mʊk-ie) knows how to articulate emotion on his latest single ‘Reflections’, out Wednesday, March 18. The Naarm/Melbourne-based alt-rock artist is a seasoned full-time performer, and after years of deliberate planning, writing and reflecting, the moniker MUKI was born.
‘Reflections’ follows his debut single ‘Gasoline’ (released in January) which too was a foray into the deeply emotional and vulnerable landscape, with MUKI putting his heart and feelings out there for all to hear. ‘Reflections’ does that again, and lays down a cathartic lyrical narrative that's equal parts self-aware, sensitive and observant. Reflecting on the track, MUKI says:
“This is a song I wrote soon after the lockdown, touching on identity issues. It takes us through a journey in which every single decision one makes defines the person they become. It’s the small decisions we make that shape who we become. When I look in the mirror it’s hard not to wonder if I’d have been looking at the same person had I chosen a different life or path.”
Electrifying finger picked guitar opens the track, and MUKI’s rich, inviting vocals draw attention from the first beat. The lush and enveloping arrangement is layered and building without ever taking the focus away from the lead vocals and the story being told.
Raw cracks of emotion in the vocal performance drive home the emotive journey that MUKI has travelled writing this expressive song. Subtle auxiliary percussion perfectly complements the rhythmic drive of the guitar, becoming the driving glue holding the beat of the track together. The unsuspecting guitar solo hints at a towering crescendo to carry out the track, before MUKI strips it all back for the final verse, with lyrics speaking to feeling lost and losing faith.
‘Reflections’ (out Wednesday, March 18) showcases the mental metamorphosis MUKI has traversed, promising an emotional depth to be discovered. Catch MUKI at the ‘Reflections’ single launch at Lulie Tavern, Thursday, March 19.
