Answering the Call: Creativity, Courage, and Finding Your Voice

Opening Lucky Charm as a Grounded Space

In this episode of Lucky Charm, host Charm opens by thanking BBS Radio and welcoming listeners into a relaxed, unscripted conversation. She explains that she does not have a rigid agenda for the show and is simply showing up because she feels called to be there. Charm describes the program as a place to feel grounded amid political confusion, global uncertainty, media noise, and the constant overwhelm of phones and digital information. Her goal is to create a calm space where people can talk honestly, share what they are dealing with, and feel less alone.

Trauma, Service, and Following a Calling

Charm shares that she has gone through severe PTSD and experiences she describes as torture by certain agencies, but says she has healed enough to want to be of service to others. She reflects on the idea that a person’s calling may come from what they had to break through, heal from, or overcome. She encourages listeners not to ignore the inner voice that keeps urging them toward something meaningful, because in her experience, that calling does not simply go away. Charm also invites others, including children, to come on the show and speak, saying she wants to hear what young people are experiencing in a confusing world.

Quitting, Criticism, and the Cost of Growth

A major part of Charm’s opening message is about the difficulty of pursuing a dream or calling. She says that if someone never feels like quitting, they may not be dreaming big enough, because meaningful growth is rarely easy. Charm talks about loneliness, leaving people behind, and facing criticism from others when choosing a different path. She emphasizes that criticism is unavoidable whether someone follows the crowd or goes against it, so fear of judgment should not be allowed to paralyze a person. For Charm, knowing yourself, loving yourself, and staying committed to your own life are key to moving forward despite criticism.

Introducing Mary Magdalene and the Power of Reinvention

Charm then welcomes guest Mary Magdalene, a writer, poet, memoirist, flash-fiction writer, creative nonfiction writer, former K–12 teacher, musician, and mother. Mary explains that she is now focusing full-time on her creative practice after decades in education, and Charm describes her as a powerful woman who refuses to take no for an answer. Their conversation begins casually with music, especially Depeche Mode and Alanis Morissette, and Mary shares that she is currently working on an Alanis Morissette project where the band will perform Jagged Little Pill from start to finish. The conversation uses music as a doorway into creativity, identity, and personal expression.

COVID, Creativity, and Choosing a Different Life

Mary explains that during the COVID shutdown, she was teaching from home while her children were also home, and the experience made her realize how much people can become enslaved to social expectations and work routines. She found herself spending more time with family, making art, doing music, and noticing that life should include more joy and creative expression. When work resumed, it became difficult to return to the old structure, and eventually she created a new life as a writer working from home. Mary encourages listeners who believe they cannot make a change to “find a way,” saying there are always different paths if a person becomes clear about what they want and works toward it.

Writing, Rejection, and Reclaiming the Voice

The episode closes with Mary and Charm discovering a powerful shared experience: both wrote creatively when they were younger, had their writing discovered by their parents, felt shamed for it, and then stopped writing. Mary explains that her teenage fiction was treated as if it were a confession rather than imagination, and that the experience silenced her creative voice for years. Now, she submits her work frequently and has already received publications and forthcoming pieces, even while collecting rejection letters along the way. Charm recognizes the parallel in her own life, and the two end the episode with a sense of connection, healing, and excitement to continue the conversation in a future episode.

(Intro Music)
Well hello everybody, welcome to Lucky Charm
So happy to be here with everyone, I love the music, it's pretty cool
Just a shout out to BBS Radio as always, thank you for so diligently working with
me and helping me and guiding me through this
Your professionalism is duly noted, thank you so much everybody
Anyway, welcome to Lucky Charm, I am your host, Charm
And I'm also lucky because I have the utmost privilege and honor
To have met so many great individuals in the span of my lifetime
And it's just, you know, there's really no bad experience with anyone
Because even if it's been a bad experience with someone
There's always a lesson to learn, there's always growth
And so I just feel so absolutely lucky to have met and participated
With so many amazing individuals in my life, whether it's been friends
Whether it's been romantic relationships, family, workplace, you name it
I really do feel lucky as far as that goes
But happy Saturday
And just kind of, we're just gonna, I'm just gonna kind of take this show
Just really honestly one minute at a time
I don't really have a particular agenda at this time
I'm just here because I feel like I was called to be here
I'm not exactly sure why, but I am here
So thank you for showing up, thank you for listening to me
And we'll kind of get started, I will have somebody be joining me in in a little bit
She's an extraordinary woman that has done some really great things throughout her life
I'm always inspired to share, especially powerful women who have gone through so much in life
And yet I've still managed to accomplish so much
No matter what life throws at them, no matter what obstacles, they just will not take no for an answer
And this person has inspired me so much so that I asked her to join me
And we'll share a little bit about her in a little bit, she'll be joining us shortly
So I'll go ahead and share her bio in a little bit
But I don't really have an objective for today, I just noticed that there is so much as always
But especially now, there's so much with politics, there's so much with a lot of global stuff really
And from what I gather when I talk to people, people are confused
They have no idea what to believe anymore, they have no idea whether they want to go left or right
Some people think they're right, some people think they're left
It's just a lot of confusion, and I don't know about you, but I don't do well with confusion
And so I kind of wanted this to be a platform where we can just kind of chat
And kind of have it be just a little bit more grounded, not so
Not to create confusion as much as the media and our iPhones want to do that for us
It can be very overwhelming, and unfortunately we all have an iPhone and we can't do without it
Especially today, you can't even buy anything without an iPhone these days in some places
So we can't throw the phones away, but we can create a space where we can kind of come together
And share what we're dealing with and just kind of feel grounded for even if it's just for an hour
So thank you again for joining me, it is absolutely my privilege and honor to be here with you today
Thank you
One of the things I wanted to share that's been on my notes here, if you will
Just a little bit about myself
I am someone who has gone through a great deal of torture by certain agencies
I have had to overcome PTSD
It was actually a pretty severe PTSD and I didn't even know it was PTSD
But I've gone through tremendous tremendous tremendous amount of what you would call
I would call it torture because it's made my life somewhat a little difficult
However, I am completely aware that I chose this
I chose to have these experiences, I'm assuming because I wanted to know what it's like to be here
That's the only way I could be of service to anyone is to have actually gone through it
And so I hope I can be of service to some of you in the near future
I read a cool quote, it said, if you're still waiting
I don't remember the words for Betum, but it was something like
If you're still waiting for the universe to give you what you want
Why don't you do what waiters do, which is serve
And so that's what I'm here to do, I want to be a service to anyone who I can be a service to
I'm not sure exactly what that looks like, but I just want you to know that I am here and there are many many many
I'm not the only one
There's a lot of people who have stepped up, if you will, and are offering their time and resources
And so it's really an honor to be here with all of you
But in any event, it's not always
It's, you know, when you have a calling, as I'm sure most people listening right now have had a calling or have a calling and you're ignoring it
But it's not a fun journey, it's not an easy journey
It's not a walk in the park, at least it has not been for me
But one thing is for sure, you're not going to be able to escape it
So if you have that nagging voice, if you will, of doing something that you keep ignoring
It's not going to go away, you can't ignore it, you can't avoid it, you can't drink enough alcohol to make it go away
Some, you know, might, but you know, it's just not going to go away
So, and that's why I'm here, because I feel, again, not to repeat myself, but I feel called to be here
I would like this to be a platform for people to feel comfortable, to come on board and host with me as they're inspired
I would like to give a voice to or allow or empower, I'm not sure what the right word would be, but
Empower others to come and speak, I'd like to be that space for people, whether men, women, or even children
Children would be absolutely phenomenal, if you have kids and you feel that they have something to share, all kids do
But if that's something you're inspired to do or your child is inspired to come on and just talk to me
That would be absolutely phenomenal, that would, nothing would excite me more than to hear from kids
I want to know what kids are dealing with these days
I know my kids are confused, they don't know what to believe, they don't know nothing
So, you know, it's a little bit of a distraction for kids these days, but again, everybody has a knife on and you can't escape
What's being fed to us on these devices, so again, if there's kids out there and I kind of consider everyone a child
But, you know, for the younger children, if you feel your child or you know someone who wants to come on board bring them on
I am very open to that, I would love to hear from them, I would love to get their perspective
Because we, I get to talk to adults all the time
But I really rarely get to talk to kids, I don't, I mean, accept my own kids, but they're not kids anymore, they're like adults
I mean, you know, I want to know what they're going through, I want to know what they're dealing with
And I feel that they would have much to offer, if you will
So, please, just to reiterate, please let me know if that's something that inspires you or your child is inspired to do
And with that, I would like to share a little bit about my guest who will be joining me here in a little bit
Her name happens to be Mary Magdalene, Magdalene, that is her real name
And she is, she's inspired me so much with just her story a little bit
She's an amazing writer from California
She writes poetry, she writes memoirs, flash fiction and CNF
And she's currently developing her first chapbook of poems along with a memoir project
She's spent decades teaching kindergarten through 12th grade, so she's been a teacher most of her life
And she's been teaching science of reading and is now dedicated full time to her own creative practice
So she's kind of left that all behind and she's just dedicating her time, she's just doing what she wants to do
And expressing her creativity
And her work explores identity, memory, motherhood
And the quiet emotional undercurrents of everyday life
If you can relate, as I'm sure some of you probably can
She's a wonderful, wonderful individual and I've grown to become very fond of her and her experience
But she'll be on here in a little bit and we'll get to hear from her
But meanwhile, I would like to maybe open up the minds of people who want to call if you have something to say
If you want to have your child come on board and talk to me and kind of let them talk about what they're dealing with in life
I would absolutely welcome that
And let's see here
So one of the students always learns more than the teacher
Nothing could be truer
I am not a teacher, I'm not intending on being a teacher, I don't want to be a teacher, I always want to remain a student
Because I don't know at all, I will never know at all
But I will share my experience in life and maybe someone will learn from that
But that doesn't mean I'm teaching anything here
I'm just like you, I just want to be a vessel, if you will, to create that space for you
To just come here and chat with me if you're inspired
But going back to my childhood and some adult experiences
I have gotten over PTSD
It's actually a miracle in my opinion
Especially when you don't even know you have PTSD, but you're operating on PTSD
That's kind of interesting
But I have been able to heal
I have been able to heal from many traumas
And it's more than happy to help and assist if I can
If anyone is dealing with that
Someone says, someone, I used to ask someone
How do you know what your passion or your calling is?
And he said, it's the thing that you had to break through from
That's your calling
So whatever you had to heal or break through out of
That's what you get to do, that's what you get to share with others
And how you did it
So if I can be of help with anyone dealing with that
These don't hesitate to reach out
And one of the
You know, I'm probably not going to say anything you've never heard before
Just as a disclaimer
Or maybe you will, but for the most part
Most of the things I'm going to say
You have already heard, you already know everything
But sometimes coming
For me, it's been that way
It's sometimes coming from a different voice, from a different angle, from a different person
Someone may hear it differently
So just so you know, I'm not saying anything spectacular
For anyone who is on their journey
I just want to be a little bit of a support
Because I'm still on my journey
I don't have all the answers, but I'm on my journey
And one of the things I've noticed on my journey
Is the things that happen that we don't really like or appreciate
And it's...
You know, things like that can make you want to quit
Or they may want to just make you want to go back
And just, you know, just throw in the towel
And I always say the difference between a loser and a winner
Is that the loser was willing to try one more time
That's it
So whatever journey you're on
And I think it's safe to say if you are human being on planet Earth
You are on a journey
Unless you're dead
You're going to be on a journey
And if... I guess what I'm trying to say
If you don't feel like you want to quit
If you don't feel like you want to throw in the towel
Every single day
Then you're not dreaming big enough
It's really that simple
There's no way
There's absolutely no way in my opinion
And this is my opinion
That you're... whatever you're up to
Whatever you're dreaming
Whatever you're wanting to accomplish
That road is not going to be a walk in the park
It's just not
And... so just keep that in mind
If you feel like you want to quit
If you feel like you've had it
Then you're on the right track
And it's not easy
But I'll tell you what
It does help to have someone... a friend
It could be a friend
It could be your husband, wife
Whatever
It could be a mentor
It could be someone you heard on the radio
It could be lyrics in the music
I don't know
It does help to have something like that
So to help you
Stay on track, if you will
Especially music
I can't even begin to tell you how much music has helped me
I mean, that's kind of become...
Not to insult anyone or anything
But that's kind of become my Bible
Music is so incredibly therapeutic
It's especially ones that you resonate with
If you actually really listen to the lyrics
That's been my savior for a long time
Speaking of saviors
That's a hot topic
No one's coming to save anybody
I'm sure you've already figured that out by now
So...
It's...
You know, and sometimes what happens
When you start answering
You're calling
The people that were with you
Are not going to be the same people that are going to walk with you
Through this journey
Sometimes it takes
Leaving them behind
And that's where the heartache comes
Because unfortunately
For most people
Including myself
That's going to happen
Some will stay with you
Some will be with you
But for the most part
They're not going to accompany you
It can even sometimes be lonely
If you're actually really
Really following
Your and listening to your calling
So...
Just be aware of that
I guess what I'm saying is
Nobody said it was going to be easy
But that's what makes this so
Yummy
So delicious
Because when you do it
You find you
You kind of meet the new you
And it's a really cool experience
So...
I'm sorry I'm just checking to see if we have
My friend calling in
But...
Anyway...
And the people around you
Are not going to understand you
And I'm finding a lot of people don't...
Let's talk about criticism
Criticism is really...
That's one of my favorites
I love it
Criticism and judgment
Love them
I eat them for breakfast
Especially criticism
It's interesting because
People will criticize you
If you do what you want to do
If you go against the grain
If you're the black sheep
Or whatever you want to call it
You will get criticized
But it's interesting they will also criticize you
For following someone
So...
Whatever
Some people follow religion
Some people follow politics
Certain leaders
Certain religious leaders
Whatever that may be
They also get criticized
And what I noticed is
You cannot escape criticism
You simply cannot
And I'm finding that people don't do
What they really want to do
Because they're afraid of criticism
But I'm here to tell you
You're going to get criticized
No matter what you do
I've gotten criticized from people
I never thought I would get criticized from
From some...
But that's just the way it is
So you have to be willing to
Understand and know
You're going to get criticized
No matter what you do
Do not let that paralyze you
Do not let that stop you
There's no way
Unless you drop dead
That they'll probably criticize you then too
Oh well, you know
They should have taken better care of their health
They wouldn't have been...
Whatever
That's just human nature
And then when you actually
Accomplish the thing that you said
You were going to accomplish
And then they're like
Wow, look what you did
You know, how did you do it?
Well, I have to ignore your criticism
That's how I did it
So, yeah, criticism is a big deal
People are so afraid of judgments
And it's so paralyzing
And in my personal experience
The way I've been able to get around that
Is to really know yourself
And you know
If you know you're thirsty
And you're dying of thirst
And you've got to drink that glass of water
You're going to die of thirst
Why would you care what anybody thinks?
It shouldn't matter
So...
And of course
Knowing yourself
And loving yourself
And knowing who you are
Are some of the ways to
Not really care what anyone says
Because this is your life
No one can tell you how to live it
No one can...
They just can't
It's your life
You get to live it how you want to live it
And you get to
Do what you want to do
Everybody's...
You know, it's amazing
Everybody's calling is different
I don't understand how people can judge or criticize
You are you, I am me
And that's that
How can you even criticize someone for what they do?
Anyway, I've said enough about that
But I think you get the idea
And with that
I'm just gonna
Give me one second
I need to help my friend here
To check in
And sorry for the dead air
Already
So
I am
I'm checking
I just message her to see
Where she's at, thanks
I haven't seen it, okay, perfect
Let's see
So
You're...
Let's see, what else do I want to talk about
I was not ready to talk for an hour
I actually, you know
I believe I have our guest here now
Hello!
Hi Mary!
Thank you!
I just message you, I'm sure you got that
Thank you for joining us, I already
Gave people a little bio about you
And I feel like they're
Anxious, they've been anxiously waiting to hear from you
Thank you for being with me
Thank you for doing this with me
I'm so excited to have you here
Of course!
I'm excited to be here, thank you
I love it, I love it
What...
I know we chatted a little bit
And for the people listening, you know, I tried so hard to
Kind of have a script and kind of get prepared
But, you know, we're kind of winging it a little bit
If that's okay, because
It just sounds, it's just kind of...
It's just more real, wouldn't you agree, Mary?
Yeah, I agree
I have no script, I have no idea what we're talking about
Me neither
Me neither
But I did share with people that you have a background
Of being a schoolteacher from kindergarten to...
12th grade
Yes
And we know you have kids
And I shared a little bit
What I told everyone was you inspired me so much
Because you, to me, you're such a powerful woman
Thank you
You're welcome
You're someone who will not take no for an answer
Am I right?
Mostly, yes
Mostly
If I have...
Well, you could say I'm stubborn then
If I have my mind set on something
If I can't find a way to it, I find a way around it
I love it
And
The thing that attracted me, that stood out to me the most is
I happen to be an absolute depression mode fan
And most people who know me know that
Yeah, I love depression
Yes, and I know you do too, and so I like to test people and see how big of a fan they are
Uh oh, don't ask me, Colton
No, no, no, no, no
You already got me
You already shared a song with me that I didn't know about
Yes, so you win
One of my secret songs, My Secret Garden by DePassionate
It's one of their older songs, I absolutely love that song
I have been listening to it like crazy, so
Oh, great
Yeah, it's such a great song
And what I didn't tell people is you are also a professional
musician, size singer, and you're in a band if that's okay to share with everyone
Yes, I am currently working on a Alanis Morissette project with some other Alanis Morissette fans
And we are having our first practice coming up
And we are going to play
Jagged Little Pill, the album from Start to Finish
We don't have any dates, but it will be in the Orange County area
And Long Beach, so we'll be playing the album Start to Finish in a couple of other songs
And I should, I think I might be singing on one of the songs as well
But I'm playing bass
And I will have fun as that, what's your favorite song from them?
Oh, I really like the song Thank You
I really like that song
Yeah, what's your second favorite?
Oh, it's my second favorite
I will tell you, there's one song I don't really like
Which one?
I don't like uninvited
Really?
I don't
You know what I think it is
I think I don't like it because it was, it reminds me of the movie that it was
Did you remember?
Yes, yes, yes, yes, Meg Ryan
With Nicholas Cage
And it is my, I just am not a fan of Nicholas Cage
I think I associate those two things together and because of that, I don't like that song
That makes sense, that makes sense
You know, when I hear that song, it doesn't remind me of the movie anymore, it used to
Yeah, that's interesting
Very interesting
You know, another way that I can be stubborn, I guess
Hey, I don't know, I don't, you know, you know, the word stubborn needs to be like removed from the English language
Because it's not stubborn, you just don't want to
Right, yeah
You know, like, that was created by the controllers, honestly, like, oh, you're being stubborn, I'm not being stubborn, I just don't want to
You're like, it's my life, don't I get to choose?
I mean, seriously, why do I have to be labeled stubborn? Like, there's something wrong with me
Yeah, no
Don't get me started
I also like the song Everything, that's also not a song, I don't think that people, it's like a go-to-land song, but I do love that song
I don't know if I know it, do you want to sing it?
No
You have a beautiful voice
Thank you
I saved that for karaoke
Oh, well
You know, part of being on this show is you have to sing, so
You have to give me some fair warning, man
Oh, I am just teasing you right now, I won't do that to you right now
So, yeah, it came out in 2004, and it's just like I said, it's not one of their well-known songs, but I love it
I don't think I've heard it, I'm gonna have to listen to that
There you go
Another song
Wow, I love that, you know, these songs, like, I used to be so proud of myself, like, I know, the past moments
You know, like, I know, and then you come along and you're like, hey, did you know about this song?
I'm like, no, what?
I have seen Depejma live in concert many, many times
So, my sisters were older than me, and growing up, they loved music, and they loved going to concerts
They went to Depejma concerts, Erasure, Er, just 80s, big 80s bands, so, Oingo, Boingo
And my parents, right, exactly, and my parents wouldn't let them go unless they took their little sister
And so, I got to go to concerts at a very young age
And it's just kind of been a thing that I've always done, I've been to so many concerts
But I remember when playing the Angel came out, that album
I couldn't get tickets to the LA show, because they sold out pretty quickly
And I drove to Arizona to go see them instead
Wow
That's how much I loved Depejma
Wow, that's amazing
I didn't, you know, I'll be honest, I used to listen to them, but I didn't really grow, I didn't start having appreciation for them until a couple of years ago
Maybe after COVID
Right, oh, okay, so you're fair enough to get tickets back
Well, I'm not new, but I never paid attention to the lyrics before
And I started paying attention to the lyrics, I'm like, oh my god, these people know stuff
Yeah, well, tell me some of your favorite Depejma songs then
Oh, one of my favorite ones is called Let's see if you know this, it's called When the Body Speaks
Hmm, I don't know if I know something
Oh, I gotcha
Well, I don't know, because I'm really bad with names of people, places and titles
I don't recall, but I'll have to listen to it to see, and then I will be honest with you
Okay, yes, but I'd be surprised if I don't know it, but it's possible
You know, it's not that popular, they harden, I went to the concert a couple of years ago and they didn't play it at the concert
Do you know Condemnation?
Yes, yeah, that's a big one
Okay, how about this one, I'll tell you some of my other favorites
What about Clean?
Yes
Clean, yeah, the cleanest of the...
Oh, I love that song
What about Blue Dress?
Blue Dress?
Yes, I think that's a title
Um, put it on, and don't say a word
Put it on, the one that I prefer
Put it on, you don't know it?
No
Oh my gosh girl, but I like it
That one is one of, um, that's a Martin Gores song
Oh, isn't he great?
Oh, he's so good
Isn't he just great?
Yeah, so yeah, it is, um, it is called Blue Dress
And it is lovely, it is wonderful
Wow, oh wow
I, um, no, I don't think I know that one
But, uh, yeah, that the, um, I think it's called when the body speaks
I'm actually looking it up right now because, um, I want to
When I heard this song, I was like, you've got to be kidding me
Like, are we able to play it at all? Can you play it?
No, because, no, I don't think, no, I don't, well, I mean, I guess I could
But I don't want to get in trouble because then the whole corner is gonna come and sue BBS
You know, the law
Of course, you know, those, those nasty things called laws
Right, I mean, oh my God, it worked just so don't, don't even let me, don't even get me started
Yes, but the police mode, I haven't seen them in so long
Yeah, just because the ticket prices were ridiculous
I know
I didn't like that
I'm in the leg now
Remember Matt's when he used to be like 60 bucks?
Oh, yeah
Remember when he used to go to a police and you would wait in line?
Right
By printed tickets and it would just be like they would just, the machine would just spit out tickets
And you just got your seats, whatever seats you got, that was it
Yeah, oh my God, yeah
No, I saw them a couple of years ago and I was like, oh, they sang every single song
That I asked them to sing
Yeah
I was thrilled, but this song is
This, this just blew me away, this is the lyrics to the song
I know you're also a very spiritual person, I know you understand spirit and how that works with the brain, correct?
Yes
Yeah
This is the lyrics to this song, it's called When the Body Speaks
To the soul's desires, the body listens
What the flesh requires keeps the heart imprisoned
Oh, I love that
What the spirit seeks, the mind will follow
When the body speaks, all else is hollow
Absolutely, this is great, I love these lyrics
Oh
Those are amazing, it's so true
It's so true, right? I mean, they nailed it
Absolutely
You realize these things, I think, as you get older too, that this is true
Well, I think I kind of, down deep, always kind of knew this and that's why I have never really adhered to
societal expectations
You know, I didn't, I knew, but I didn't know what I knew
Like, I knew something wasn't right, something's not right, why am I different, why do I notice things that other people don't
I just, I thought there was something wrong with me
I still think that's what people are going to do, but
That's besides the point
When did you start feeling that way?
When did you start thinking about it?
You mean like kind of waking up?
Yeah
That's a great question, it was
It was, it was, I always knew, but I always suffered
You know, before you came on, I was kind of sharing with everyone
I was actually, well, I don't want to really keep talking about it, but they knew that I knew
And so I was tortured as a child in school and with other agencies and stuff like that
But I didn't know why, I just thought it was because I was a bad girl
Right
But honestly, before COVID happened, I used to talk to people and I used to tell them like, something's not right here
This is not normal
This is weird
And COVID happened and that caused me to kind of stay home and have more time to see what the hell is going on
That's kind of when it happened, 2020
Yeah, you know, I will say, I kind of, you know, I had some childhood trauma and I do write about that in my writing
So I think that that kind of opened my eyes to, you know, what is right and wrong and kind of just let go of societal expectations
I remember the brief time that I spent in high school, I had lots of friends, but my friends were in many different groups
And so I, during lunch, I would travel to talk to all the people that I knew, but I had to go from group to group, there were clicks everywhere, right?
Yeah, I knew then that something was off because I didn't fit in completely with any of the groups, but I had friends in all of the groups and it felt unnatural
And these clicks were just so separated and when I got to college, I started college at 15, when I got to college, it fit, I felt like I finally fit somewhere
Oh, wow
Yeah, it wasn't until I was in college that I felt like I fit in a school setting
Wow, that's interesting
Yeah, but I will say that when we got shut down because of COVID and I stayed home, I was teaching at home
I, and my kids were home, we were doing lots of art projects, doing music
We were spending more time with each other and it was then that I realized, wow, we are slaves to the society
And what we really should be doing is enjoying life, why aren't we enjoying life more and spending more time with our family
And doing more things that speak to our soul like art and music
And I did at that time kind of just, it was hard, when things opened back up and everyone was expected to go back into work and that was very difficult for me
So you have to go back to work?
I did, I don't have to do anymore
Nice, love it
So I work from home now as a writer, that's what I do
So you created that right?
Yes
Yes
Yes
A few years ago, I told a co-worker that that was my goal and it happened, so it happened in February of 2025
And now I'm able to, I have the opportunity to stay home, be with my kids more and write
Which is something I always wanted to do
That is so cool
What would you say to people who say, well, I can't do that?
Find a way
Right
There's always a way
There's always a way
Exactly
I, you know, I dropped out of high school when I was a freshman
And I found a way through high school
And it took me six months, and then I started Community College at 15
There's always a way, there's
There are different ways to do things, just like taxes, right?
People find loopholes in all the tax laws
They don't have to pay things, well, life is the same way I would say, that there are loopholes everywhere
As long as you're clear on what you really want, huh?
Yes, yeah, you have to be clear, you have to say it, this is what you're doing, and then you have to find
You have to work towards it
You're not going to sit there and it's going to come to you, you do have to work towards it, but you have to put it out there
Say it
Was it easy?
No, no, not easy, not easy
It was one of the roughest times of my life
But that's in the past now, so I don't have to live there anymore
Beautiful
So, yeah, it kind of, it's like birth isn't easy, right?
Not even for the baby, they come out crying and screaming
It's like when you're being rebirth, it's not easy
Yeah, that's what I was kind of trying to relate to people, you know, people don't see what goes behind the scenes
Like, you could be on this stage and be like, oh my God, I want to do what she's doing, but they're not willing to go through what you went through
Oh yeah, I'm really struggling with one of the baselines
And it's hours of work, hours of work
Wow
To just be on the stage for an hour, you know, hour and a half
Wow, that's amazing, now your kids are also into music, right?
My, well my daughter loves this scene, but she is an artist
She loves to draw paint, she does a lot of digital art
My son is a musician, he plays the guitar, he sings his voices, absolutely amazing
Oh, yeah, but he likes to, he likes kind of the screamo kind of genre of music
He likes all kinds of music, I should say
From French to Notra to Depej Mode, he went to a cure concert
But he also likes, you know, tool and radio head and then not, you know, not so big-named bands that are like heavier
So he likes heavy music too, but he likes a wide range
I absolutely am so impressed with his wide range
Wow
But this kid can listen to a song and then like, if I need to know what note is that?
He will listen to it and he can tell me where are my bass to play it
That's so cool, so he's just got that talent
Yeah, that is so cool
But it's also not easy, you know
It's not, you know, before you came on, that was my thing, it's not going to be easy
Yeah
There's going to be heartache, there's going to be challenges, there's going to be
Because the universe is preparing you to become that person
Right?
Yeah, and you know, you have to see if you have what it takes, you have to keep going
Yeah, right, the universe is like, are you sure you want this?
You really want this?
Yeah
You've got to fight for it a little bit
It's not just going to fall on your lap, but you know, once you get past that hard part, you know, things are still hard
I'm new to writing, I started writing in June
Wow, I have three publications out right now, I have two forthcoming, but I have, I can wallpaper my wall with rejection letters
Oh, wow, but I put it out there all the time, I write and I put it out there
And coming into the writing world so late, I think it actually benefits me because I'm not afraid
of being rejected and I'm not afraid of showing my work because I'm so new to it
I speak to other writers and they will only submit pieces maybe once a month
I'm almost every day, oh, here's a piece, I'm going to submit it there
And they take a lot of time and they'll edit it for months before they submit it
Before they feel like it's ready, and because I'm new to it and I'm probably a little immature in that sense
I just, I send it out, but because of that, I've had quite a few publications
You know, because I'm not afraid to show my work
I love that
Yeah, so what keeps you, what keeps you at that fire lit, what is it?
I, like I said, I've always wanted to
You've always wanted it
So we have to go back to
Why, I used to write as a teenager and why I stopped
I don't know, it's a big place
So when I was young, I would write and I would write when my parents weren't home and they were at work
And I would put them in little files on my dad's computer, you know, way back when
Yeah, I would lock those files away because I didn't want them to see my writing
So it was very personal and I was creating stories, I was creating characters
And I was afraid of showing them inside of me
So one time they found my work and it was just to put it, you know, bluntly, it was a shaming session
Oh my God, the same thing happened to me
Oh really?
Wow
So it was like, you're writing about this, did you do this?
Is this from, like, you know, they, they
Wow
Instead of reading it as fiction, they read it as like, oh, she's had these experiences
Let's interrogate her
Wow, that is wild
And so I stopped writing
Wow, you know, I went through college and I wrote academically only
Hey, to interrupt, we have two minutes
Yeah, oh, okay, go ahead
So, well, we can, uh, yeah
I love this conversation
I absolutely love this conversation
I want to know how you relate to this because I hear you saying that
I wrote, I used to write poems when I was younger, teenager
And my parents found it and they shamed me
That's amazing, that's wild
I'm like, isn't it?
And then I stopped writing, I stopped
Yeah, the same thing, this is wild
Because it was, it was fiction, it wasn't real, but they actually, it's just
Yeah, it's just
And I didn't remember that, and to reason, and so I just stopped
Because I thought it was wrong
Same
But I love you so much
Thank you so much for showing this with me
I am so excited, will you join me again in two weeks?
I would love to
Oh, thank you, my honor
Oh, thank you so, so, so, so much
We're giving a voice to many here
And let's see where this takes us
Thank you, everybody
Thank you so much
Thank you, thank you for being with me
Thank you, everybody
Have a wonderful, fantastic rest of your Saturday
Love you all, and we'll see everyone here in two weeks
Thank you, thank you, bye-bye
