Jazz bass legend Brian Bromberg chats about his critically-acclaimed album Bromberg Plays Hendrix

A very versatile acoustic and electric bassist capable of playing straight-ahead jazz, funk, and fusion, Brian Bromberg has built a respected career playing with a bevy of luminaries and issuing his own highly regarded albums. Influenced by the virtuosic finger-tapping style of Stanley Jordan, Bromberg sometimes sounds like three bassists at once during his often thunderous solos.

A remixed and remastered version of veteran jazz bassist Brian Bromberg‘s 2012 tribute album to Jimi Hendrix, Bromberg Plays Hendrix,  in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the guitar legend’s death.

The unique instrumental album actually features no electric guitar, with Bromberg’s bass accompanied solely by longtime Jeff Beck drummer Vinnie Colaiuta.

Bromberg Plays Hendrix features renditions of such classic songs as “Fire,” “Manic Depression,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Foxey Lady,” “Hey Joe,” “Crosstown Traffic” and “Purple Haze,” among others. The reissue also includes a new original tribute tune Brian composed titled “Jimi.”

Bromberg says he’s been a Hendrix fan since he was a kid.

“I was 10 years old when he died, and I remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom, looking at his picture and crying,” he recalls. “Jimi Hendrix was a larger than life figure to me. There was something about him that really intrigued me, even as a young child.”

Regarding Colaiuta’s contribution to his album, Brian says,

“He’s a genius. There’s nothing he can’t do.”

Bromberg’s long list of credits includes playing on albums by Lou Rawls, Stephen Bishop, David Cassidy, longtime David Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson, Kenny G, Michael Bublé, Andrea Boccelli and ex-Toto singer Bobby Kimball.

A TRUE MASTERPIECE

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

A very versatile acoustic and electric bassist capable of playing straight-ahead jazz, funk, and fusion, Brian Bromberg has built a respected career playing with a bevy of luminaries and issuing his own highly regarded albums. Influenced by the virtuosic finger-tapping style of Stanley Jordan, Bromberg sometimes sounds like three bassists at once during his often thunderous solos. It's a talent that found him a part of Stan Getz's group at age 19. Since then, he has been a valuable sidemen with artists like Dave Grusin, Billy Cobham, Michael Bublé, and others. He recorded his first albums as a leader in the '80s with dates like 1988's Basses Loaded with Ernie Watts, and has since balanced session work with recording his own varied dates, such as 1991's It's About Time: The Acoustic Project, 2005's Metal, and 2010's Bromberg Plays Hendrix.

Taking time out from his solo work, Bromberg appeared on albums by Till Brönner, Andrea Bocelli, Andreas Varady, and others. In 2016, he returned with Full Circle, which included guest appearances from Arturo Sandoval, Kirk Whalum, and others. Thicker Than Water arrived in 2018 and featured guest spots by Najee, George Duke, Randy Brecker, and more.

The Bromberg Plays Hendrix remix/remaster will be available on September 18, 2020.  You can begin Pre ordering as of August 14th, 2020.
