Guitarist & Songwriter
ED KING LEGENDARY GUITARIST & SONGWRITER
FOR 'THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK' & 'LYNYRD SKYNYRD'
ON THE RAY SHASHO SHOW
“I am the luckiest guitar player on Earth,” Ed King declares.
King caught lightning in a bottle twice: First as a co-founder of the hit-making Strawberry Alarm Clock and then as a member of Southern rock giants Lynyrd Skynyrd.
As a teenager, King was a founding member of Thee Sixpence, the high school group that transformed itself into the Strawberry Alarm Clock. He and keyboardist Mark Weitz wrote the music for the smash hit “Incense and Peppermints,” starting with a memorable riff dreamed up by Weitz. King contributed the bridge to the then-instrumental.
Weitz tells the story: “I couldn’t figure out a bridge for the song. Ed King lived pretty close. I called him and told him I need a bridge for this new song idea I’m working on. He drove over, and about 45 minutes later we had it.”
The single’s songwriting credits notoriously failed to note their role in creating the song, but “Incense and Peppermints” hit No. 1 in 1967 and remains a rock-pop radio staple to this day.
Credit for “Incense and Peppermints” went to a songwriting team that worked with the publisher. He and Weitz collaborated again on “Tomorrow,” which charted at No. 23 in early 1968. Once again, King came to the rescue with a bridge.
King continued to write songs with Weitz as well as guitarist Lee Freeman. Strawberry Alarm Clock songs that King co-wrote include “Sit with the Guru,” “The Black Butter Trilogy,” “Pretty Song from Psych-Out” and “Soft Skies, No Lies.”
King says, “The Strawberry Alarm Clock tours with the Beach Boys in ’67 and ’68 outshine any other period in my life. Carl Wilson coming over to my room to show me the chords to ‘God Only Knows’ far outweighs any Skynyrd experience.”
King stayed with the band until 1972, when he took a flyer and joined a Southern rock band that had opened for the Strawberry Alarm Clock on a regional tour. That band was Lynyrd Skynyrd, which was heading into the studio to record its first album with producer Al Kooper.
King started out playing bass and then switched to guitar.
He formed a songwriting partnership with singer Ronnie Van Zant, which produced “Poison Whisky” on that album and then later “Sweet Home Alabama,” one of the band’s two signature songs.
Other Skynyrd songs co-written by King include “Saturday Night Special,” “Swamp Music,” “I Need You,” “Workin’ for MCA” and “Railroad Song.”
King’s guitar playing and songwriting skills were an essential element to the band's first three albums: Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd, Second Helping, and Nuthin' Fancy.
King decided to leave the band in 1975 during the "Torture Tour." He was replaced in 1976 by Steve Gaines, who was killed in a plane crash along with lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, backup singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray. Other band members (Collins, Rossington, Wilkeson, Powell, Pyle, and Hawkins), tour manager Ron Eckerman, and several road crew suffered serious injuries.
Ironically Gaines and King share the same birthdate.
In 1987, King joined the Lynyrd Skynyrd survivor’s reunion tour and played with the band until his retirement from music in 1996.
In 2006, King entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It is my great pleasure to welcome Ed King, legendary guitarist & songwriter for The Strawberry Alarm Clock and Lynyrd Skynyrd to The Ray Shasho Show.

Autor, Facilitator, Speaker on Loss and Grief
Diane Pomerance is the author of nine books, seven of which are nonfiction about animals. She has a deep love and profound respect for nature and all living creatures, and she writes and speaks of the interconnectedness and interdependence of the whole of life. She is an ardent animal lover and advocate who has rescued, rehabilitated and adopted more than 46 dogs over the past decades. She is deeply involved with animal welfare and the environment.
She is also a Grief Recovery Specialist who helps people recover from grief over any kind of loss, but has a special interest in helping those who have lost a beloved animal companion to cope with and recover from their grief. Animals are dearly loved and respected family members to many of us, and yet we have been socialized to feel ashamed or embarrassed by the intense grief we feel following their loss. Dr. Pomerance created and established the Pet Grief Counseling Program for the SPCA of Texas in 2000. It is a free service open to the public which offers bi-monthly grief recovery groups as well as telephone and one-on-one counseling. All of the grief counselors are specially trained SPCA of Texas volunteers.
Spirituality has been the passion, the “calling” of her life, and she has dedicated her life to spiritual research and exploration. A dear friend of hers introduced her (at age 15) to a book that would transform her life. It was called An Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda at. At about the same time she was also introduced to an Indian guru of the Sant Mat religious movement and spent a weekend retreat with him in Toronto, Canada. She was a voracious reader and felt a powerful affinity for the teachings of Sant Mat.
For many years Diane studied and conducted research into various world religions and philosophies ranging from Hinduism and Buddhism, Spiritualism and Theosophy, Sufi to Subud, etc.and was privileged to study with many great spiritual teachers and masters including J. Krishnamurti, Swami Muktananda, Gurumayi Chidvilisananda, Sri Daya Mata and contemporary life teachers such as M. Scott Peck, Jack Canfield and Dr. Leo Buscaglia.
She spent five years studying with and then writing the biography of her remarkable spiritual teacher and mentor, British psychic, medium/healer, Katherine Hayward who had been born in Wales in 1899 and had an out-of-the-body experience at the age of 7. Angelic beings encouraged her to return to the physical body and Katherine awoke in agonizing pain but speaking in a full, mature adult voice and being able to predict the future. Diane researched and witnessed numerous examples of psychic phenomena. Above all else, she learned a body of spiritual teachings that Katherine and her family had received from their Spirit Guides for a 6-month period of daily instruction during the early 1920’s regarding Life & Death – their meaning and purpose.
Diane holds a Ph.D. degree in Mass Media/Communications from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She earned her M.A. in Theater from the University of Michigan. She also received her B.A. in History and Speech from the University of Michigan along with a secondary education
teaching certification.
Diane loves animals and nature. She also loves to travel and has been to most parts of the world from Africa to Australia, South America to Asia, Europe to South America, and so on. She has an innate love of and respect for indigenous peoples and all non-violent cultures. Her exciting new book, Katherine: A Woman of Vision
30 year career serving preparedness market
Denis Korn, CEO Prepare Direct
Denis Korn is a long time expert on preparedness with food, water and medical supplies. This is a timely subject with global economic reset and geopolitical turmoil over currency revaluation.
Denis will share his perspective on the Big Shift portents that are getting a lot of buzz on the Internet.
Denis has taught college philosophy, and he will be dispelling the myths of fear-mongers about current supplies of food and prep items you may want for health, security and savings.
No one knows if or when economic crisis may deepen, but as Chuck Baldwin wisely counseled in his article on preparedness, “I fully realize that most of us Americans cannot fathom a world in which food cannot be obtained from the supermarket or fuel cannot be obtained from the corner gas station or that the power grid could be offline for more than a few hours. In the meantime, remember your Boy Scout motto: ‘Be Prepared’."
So tune in to Denis Korn for a philosophically correct perspective on the ‘Big Shift’ of global events in the months to come.

Researcher, Laser physicist, writer, producer, director of, What the BLEEP do we Know?
WILLIAM ARNTZ
William Arntz started his professional career as a research laser physicist, and developed the first wave optics simulator for high energy lasers. This project went on in the 80’s to be called “Star Wars”.
He then moved on to software, writing “AutoSys”–an automated job control system currently in use by most Fortune 500 companies.
He sold that company, retired, but then decided to make a film: creating, producing and directing What the BLEEP Do We Know!?, an exploration of spirituality, quantum physics, neurology and outrageous possibilities.
The film and the companion book, with editions in over twenty languages, were international hits. Another stint of retirement followed, but then he got the wild notion to do a how-to book on Suffering, figuring that people do it all the time so how hard could it be?
James Strait a retired professional pilot who started as a youthful Special Forces soldier. Along that way I flew over 100 different makes, models, categories of airplanes along with accumulating over 3000 skydives. I also owned two small companies that provided one off proto-types and testing for parachute systems, both civilian and military. After retirement in 2006 I became a talk radio host in the Philadelphia market. I was active from 2006-2012 as the host of "Strait Talks". I recently disabled my radio hosting website. As a result of interviewing the principles of "Weird NJ" I was hired to write "Weird Missouri". I followed the first book with three novels, and am working on a fourth novel now. As an on air guest I can speak at length and in depth about the military, aviation, skydiving, writing, radio broadcasting, publishing, and...politics.
Singer/songwriter and recording artist
NESTA
Singer/songwriter and recording artist Nesta is creating music inspired by living in the moment. Recently, her focus has been electronic dance music and the fusion where it meets pop music. The line between these genres is becoming a blur and Nesta is dedicated to telling stories using powerful, honest lyrics combined with interesting beats and tempos.
Nesta describes her songwriting as a tree. She starts at the root by picking a tempo or baseline beat, from there she adds lyrics and melodies which represent the branches of the trees. Her background vocals and extra instruments symbolize the blossoms of a tree and the completion of a new song. She is inspired by girl power and strongly influenced by the dominant vocals and storytelling of Janis Joplin, Florence and the Machine, Aretha Franklin, Pink, Sia, Lana Del Ray and Lorde.
One of the most rewarding parts of her career so far, is when she is able to perform every aspect of her show on her own, which sometimes includes aerial acrobatics. When she finishes a show, it reaffirms her purpose within the music industry and why she works so diligently toward this dream of hers that is becoming her reality. She has also developed a thick skin and accepted that everyone is going to have an opinion, but she is fervent with her message and sees her art as her blessing. Outside of music, Nesta is also passionate about wellness and helping rescue dogs find loving homes.
Nesta has clear goals and a concise plan to grow her fan base and make her music available to international music consumers. Nesta is now under the wing of elite US based management company, Arrow Music Agency after recently signing an exclusive worldwide management deal. This new union will help build Nesta’s profile internationally creating diverse opportunities. Arrow Music Agency is headed up by Chris Sobonya (President), and has a roster of worldwide artists from countries such as the US, Canada, Sweden, The Netherlands, New Zealand, UK and Australia.
