Boorloo/Perth-based artist EDIE returns with her sophomore EP, 'Garden of Edie', out Thursday, June 4. Exploring themes of self-discovery, confidence, confusion, toxic relationships and the consequences of temptation and choice, 'Garden of Edie' is an intoxicating electronic-pop and dance release that, much like the forbidden fruit, leaves innocence behind once bitten.
Following her 2024 EP 'unsaid' and sharp-edged singles 'Bleed' and 'Girl’s Girl', EDIE has continued to evolve her sound beyond its indie-pop and alt-rock foundations. Looking to shapeshift and expand her artistic world, EDIE united with producer Calvin Bennett to create 'Garden of Edie', stepping confidently into a darker, bolder and undeniably club-ready version of herself. Speaking on the EP, she shares:
"This EP is about figuring out who I am in my 20s. Exploring a range of feelings from happiness to sadness to confusion. It’s cathartic and raw, and I hope it can resonate with someone out there!"
Opening the EP, 'Fall Of Man' unfolds through sparse synths and pulsing electronic drums, capturing the frustration and hopelessness that comes with trying to help someone unwilling to change.
From there, 'Burning' actually leans closer to EDIE’s indie-pop and alt-rock roots through acoustic guitar, acoustic drums and reverb-soaked electric guitar lines, as she reflects on the painful realisation that a relationship has become toxic.
Returning to the EP’s darker electronic-pop and dance foundations, 'Chemical' channels emotional overwhelm through oscillating synths, manipulated, trance-gate vocals and pulsating bass, capturing the experience of obsessive thoughts replaying on a loop.
Closing the release is its title track. 'Garden of Edie' leans fully into temptation and self-liberation, pairing brooding synth textures and driving dance production with sharp lyricism to deliver a dark, hypnotic and after-hours finish.
Acting as a soundtrack to the passage from innocence to self-awareness, 'Garden of Edie' explores human flaws and the consequences of temptation and choice. Step into the garden on Thursday, June 4, then catch her launching it at The Bird in Perth on Saturday, June 6.
