The opposite of a “real job” to some, the story of a musician’s journey is one of persistence, belief and unwavering commitment. Cairns-based artist Anais Campbell explores this theme in her upcoming single ‘Small Things Everyday’, out Friday, February 27.
Following a brief hiatus, Campbell returns with a more mature sound, poised to carve out a distinctive space within the contemporary country pop landscape. Having recorded her first EP in Nashville at just 17, and with appearances at Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Brisbane Ekka, Campbell continues to push creative boundaries with ‘Small Things Everyday’.
The track offers insight into the experience of wearing someone else’s shoes and shouldering the opinions of others, a perspective shaped by Campbell cutting her teeth early in the country music scene.
Produced by Ben Oldland, the 'Small Things Everyday' carries a sense of hope and defiance. It features a steady-paced rhythm, warm organic guitar tones and silky, soaring vocals forming a meditative soundscape, with moments of slide guitar providing a welcome lift. This mirrors the daily motions of pursuing long-term goals, punctuated by occasional sweet spots of progress. It’s a sentiment that extends beyond a career in music, resonating with anyone navigating life’s challenges under the weight of external expectations.
This is reflected in the song’s understated yet affirming lyric: “What if I did, what if I do, doesn’t make sense to you… doesn’t have to.”
‘Small Things Everyday’ follows previous releases, including London-recorded ‘Drink Me Down’ and the hook-laden, not-so-drinking anthem ‘Had Enough’. “It’s an anthem for those who believe in who they are and what they offer, achieving their goals through small things every day,” says Campbell.
Fans of Laci Kaye Booth, Noah Cyrus and Kelsea Ballerini will find plenty to love as Anais Campbell steps into a new musical era, declaring her commitment to the lifestyle with ‘Small Things Everyday’, out Friday, February 27.
