Title: What are People For?
We will answer the second question in our two-part series on essential questions: What are People for? Pastor Jonker will preach on Deuteronomy 6:1-9. We will also be privileged to witness the sacrament of baptism.
Ordinary Time is the longest liturgical season in the church year going from Pentecost to Advent. It is the season for spiritual growth. It gives the believer time to understand the story of God’s plan of salvation as revealed through the history of Israel and the early church and to incorporate the implication God’s salvation in Jesus Christ into their own “ordinary”, everyday lives.
The liturgical colors for Ordinary Time, blue and green, are now changing in color. Along with the addition of texture, they symbolize elements of growth and the passage of time. The banners and paraments reflect concepts from 2 Peter 3:17-18. We are encouraged to continue our growth in the knowledge of our Lord, Jesus Christ and experience his grace. As we do, we will be prepared to face life’s challenges and remain firm in our faith.
The banners are hung in the diptych form. This form usually presents two pieces of related artwork
attached or seamed together along the center. But this is not always the case as seen in the presentation of the banners in the sanctuary. While still being side by side, they are separated by the stained glass window.
These striking banners were thoughtfully designed by David Huizenga and fabricated in collaboration with Jan and Claude Bos.
