The Great Emu War Casualties kick the new year off with 'Donut', out Friday, January 30, an upbeat indie track with a heart-on-sleeve sincerity. The single arrives alongside the announcement of their debut album 'Public Sweetheart No. 1', due Friday, March 27, offering the first taste of what is set to be a candid and self-aware full-length release.

With plenty on their mind and no shortage of feelings to share, The Great Emu War Casualties continue to build on a catalogue that has been steadily growing since their inception in 2019.

With three EPs already behind them, the band move into album territory with a blunt and honest reflection on life so far, delivered through their lucid art-rock and indie pop blend, marked by bright melodies, restless rhythms and sharply observant lyricism. Frontman Joe Jackson states:

“This album is a self-assessment of my own behaviour over an extended period of time and the various ways in which I have affected the people closest to me, so I’ve at least tried to make it catchy in order to better live with myself. It’s about the clarity I’ve found in going back to basics, in trying to remove the chaos and noise of the world in favour of honesty. An anthemic apology, with some ‘sorry, not sorry’ sprinkled on top. I am sorry though, really.”

Serving as the first taste of the debut album, ‘Donut’ captures The Great Emu War Casualties at their most open. Bright and peppy on the surface, the track moves with a steady, driving pulse, carried by chiming guitars, clean melodic lines and a warm, forward-moving rhythm section that recalls classic indie pop in its most earnest form. There is an easy momentum to the song, upbeat and sunlit, even as the lyrics begin to unravel longings, regrets and half-formed dreams.

Light on its feet yet emotionally loaded, 'Donut' sets the tone for a record that embraces honesty, humour and the uncomfortable work of trying to grow up, even when the answers are still out of reach.

With ‘Donut’, The Great Emu War Casualties open the door to 'Public Sweetheart No. 1', a debut album full of apologies, admissions and catchy attempts at self-improvement. ‘Donut’ is out Friday, January 30, with the album landing Friday, March 27.
