The U.S. ranks the worst in maternal care and mortality rates compared to 10 other developed nations, despite spending the largest percentage on health care of all wealthy nations. Worse yet, two-thirds of the 700 pregnancy-related deaths that occur every year are preventable.

Dr. Dona Perry, a Board-certified OB/GYN and Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, discusses the importance of support during pregnancy and postpartum care, communicating after pregnancy with someone who knows the warning signs of a problem, and how a doula educates and supports moms and babies during and after pregnancy, which significantly improves their health and decreases the occurrence of illness and death. Also, mental illness, including substance abuse, presents a significant threat to the health and well-being of the mother and child; and how nutrition is foundational to good brain health.
