In the Pentateuch, Exodus 20:8, The Almighty God of Israel gives an irrevocable order; “Zakor et, Yom Ha-Shabbat li kadosh”. Remember the day of the sabbath to sanctify it”. There is a counterpart in Deuteronomy 5:12: “Sharmor et yom ha shabbat li kadosh,” safeguard the day of the sabbath and sanctify it”.
