Gavin Povey plays and sings in the style of 30’s, 40’s, 50’s Piano Rhythm & Blues, Stride, Swing Boogie Woogie, Blues, Country, Jazz and Soul
His influences are such legends as Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Fats Waller, Smiley Lewis, Big Joe Turner, Otis Spann, Dr John, Henry Butler and many more. Playing an eclectic mix of covers and original songs he is one of a handful of artists carrying on the line and spreading the message of R&B Piano music
Gavin began learning piano at 5 years of age, and he discovered Rhythm & Blues at age 13 when he heard a 78-rpm of Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson performing ‘Boogie Woogie Man’.
Gavin realised what his piano tutor was teaching him was not what he wanted to learn! A lifetime of touring and recording followed, with such names as
- Kirsty McColl (there’s a guy works down the chip shop etc)
- Dave Edmunds (U.S, Japan and world tours)
- Dion
- Shakin’ Stevens (15+ top ten UK hit singles, including ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’)
- Albert Lee (2014 album ‘Frettening Behaviour’)
- Plus many other artists.
Now Gavin has finally realised his long-time dream of playing his own songs with his own band.
