The American Crisis, Part Five

On the Brink: Those whom the gods would destroy they first make President

by Kevin Annett

The nation is threatened from within and without. This is not a time for half-measures. It is time to make ourselves great again. And on that day, heads will roll in the dust. – Adolf Hitler, 1932

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing because it gives you the illusion that you know what’s going on. – Mark Twain

A fool and his money are soon elected. – Will Rogers

The other day, Lenny McDermott and I were talking about America. Like me, Len is half American and not burdened by Canadians’ compulsive disdain for Yanks.

“It makes me sick to see the Republic fall apart,” he muttered over his beer. “Forget about the election. There won’t be any winners; just insanity. You’ll see.”

“Like in Germany in 1933, eh?” I replied.

Len gave me a dour look.

“It’s a lot worse than fascism,” he said. “It’s something we’ve never seen before. And when America goes down, we do too.”

I agree with Len.

The latest bafflegab spewing from the U.S. corporate media is that the Democrats are in disarray over whether to stick with Joe Biden or change horses in midstream. It’s pretty much all we hear about these days during this issueless Presidential campaign. The “Joe or Kamala?” fabrication is a classic divide and conquer method to disunite Democrats during the final months before November. From that we can infer that America’s string pullers have chosen Donny Boy to be the next one to wear the crown.

A second Trump presidency certainly suits China’s agenda and its takeover bid of our continent. A Trump defeat and the ensuing civil war unleashed by his fanatical armed minions would be bad for the Chinese business of peacefully securing control of North America’s resources and infrastructure, which is well under way. But what no-one can calculate is the effect of the elimination of the Republic’s Constitution and institutions by the one-man rule embodied in a Trump “president for life” administration.

The American political establishment, despite its panicked and demoralized condition, will not go gently into that night, any more than did Roman senators when Caesar came to power. The transition to a kingly oligarchy will not be smooth or easy in America, especially when the psychotic hordes backing Trump will face the inevitable betrayal by their boss and a massive disillusionment, like the SA stormtroopers did when Hitler won state power. And when the MAGA balloon is punctured, more than Democrat heads will roll.

Equally cataclysmic will be the global impact of a Trump regime’s withdrawal from NATO and betrayal of traditional US allies. Such a Chinese and Russian-sponsored move will completely upset the world power balance and more easily provoke a nuclear war.

All of this instability caused by a Trump presidency is something that the stumbling U.S. economy cannot afford, as a new recession looms and America’s share of the global GDP continues to fall to a third of what it was in the 1970’s. A joke circulating in Arizona is that soon Americans will be the illegal immigrants crossing the Rio Grande to seek jobs in a resurgent Mexican economy. Trump’s skewed, fairy-tale MAGA vision of a “revived” Pax Americana is as out of touch with reality as the view from Mar-a-Lago.

That said, there is a resilience in the American national character that transcends politics and the periodic group hysteria that Yanks are prone to exhibit. The strength of that character will be sorely tested in the years to come as Americans witness the destruction of the last vestiges of their formal democracy.

As during the antebellum and Civil War years of the mid-19th-century, a newer and higher awareness of the enemy we all face must take hold in our national psyche and be the basis for that “new birth of freedom” that is our answer to the Vatican and Chinese-sponsored global Corporatocracy. That enemy is, like my friend Len observed, something we’ve never seen before, and it can only be fought with fresh minds, renewed hearts, and the unbending will to recover and make America again.

Meanwhile, as the Proverb says, let us not place our trust in princes - or in their controlled elections. The power lies in our hands.

“We have bequeathed to you a Republic, if you can hold on to it.” – Ben Franklin, 1787
