WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE with Mark Susnow
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

That future that we sometimes dread and that future that sometimes we believe will be better than today. That future is always out there lurking somewhere ahead in time. We don't quite get there, because after all it is the future, not the now of the moment to moment experience of life.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

There is always the day after, you're wondering about the significance of what just occurred. You try to make sense of it. I'm referring to the election of course. Most people I know were shocked and disappointed. But not all of them-some were ready for the change they think will occur.

That day after could also be other things that affect your sense of well-being. You know them- relationship challenges, health challenges, financial hits, and those unexpected hits from left field, all part of being human. They're painful when they occur but you get over them.

The bigger challenge is how we handle these disappointments that come around more than we would like. Even bigger still, is our relationship to uncertainty itself-life's big unknown. You know- the future.

That future that we sometimes dread and that future that sometimes we believe will be better than today. That future is always out there lurking somewhere ahead in time. We don't quite get there, because after all it is the future, not the now of the moment to moment experience of life.

Some simple truths of being human:

Simple truth: When you are fully engaged with life, disappointment comes with the territory-there is that dance between what is and how you want it to be.  If you're attached to how you want it to be, there is a greater likelihood that you'll be disappointed. Keep dancing and perhaps you discover a new step, a new attitude, a new possibility that just might get you excited again.

Simple truth: Life's cycles will continue with or without you-the change in the seasons, the rising and setting of the sun,  the ebb and flow of the tides of life. With disappointment comes new possibilities if you stay open to them. Perhaps the most significant possibility is coming back to yourself. That is the only you there is, not the you that is being shaped and molded by the media. And the media is good at what they do. They are pros at sucking you in. I have been sucked in many times.

Simple truth: At this moment, you might not know what these possibilities are, but rest assured they are out there.

Simple truth: You can get excited again. Be willing to dream again. Be open to possibilities that exceed your expectations. Yes you'll have to risk getting disappointed again, but it's the price you have to pay when you're fully engaged with life and really care. And being fully engaged provides much of the juiciness and spice of life.

Simple truth: When you focus on one day a time, you have the power to make your experience of today and each day great, even though you might not be able to control exactly what might occur. Certainly you can't control other people.

Simple practice: Yes look at your compass in the morning so you know where you are headed and then let go.  More than ever, begin your day with meditation or some form of mindfulness practice, even if just for five minutes.  Be grateful for all the blessings in your life. Be curious about what the highlight of your day might be. This simple practice  helps you stay centered so that you're not knocked off balance by the ups and downs of the days events.

There is one thing left to do which is to enjoy the journey.
