John Barbour's World with John Barbour

Show Host:

John Barbour "the godfather of reality TV" created, co-hosted, co-produced, and wrote 'Real People' - the first reality show, which was number one on NBC for three years during the early 1980's.

Barbour moved to the United States in the early sixties. His comedy act, particularly his 1965 album, It's Tough to Be White, dealt in part with civil rights and black-white relations.

Barbour hosted the pilot for The Gong Show in the mid '70s, and was a regular panelist on the 1988 Canadian (US syndicated) version of Liar's Club.

Barbour portrayed game show host Harry Monte in a 1975 episode of Sanford and Son.

John Produced, Wrote, and Hosted 'Ernie Kovacs: TV's Original Genius,'for Showtime that aired later on PBS. At the time it was reviewed as 'the best documentary about a performer!'

He also directed and wrote the 1992 documentary The JFK Assassination: The Jim Garrison Tapes. This film covers the investigation of District Attorney Jim Garrison, who, after the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy, decided to further investigate the official report given by the Warren Commission. The documentary hypothesizes connections between the assassination and the FBI, the CIA, the Mafia, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and other organizations and foreign affairs issues. The film won an award in 1993 at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.

John Barbour
Las Vegas
NVUSA
Occupation:
Retired writer-producer-TV host-actor-stand-up comic-critic-and fireman on the CNR
Biography:

Lucille Ball's favorite writer, aside from the wonderful writers of her show, was John Barbour. She said for the ten years that John was the film critic for Los Angeles Magazine, she couldn't wait for the beginning of the month just to read his reviews. And watch him on KNBC's six o'clock news!

And when Bob Wood was President of CBS TV he said, 'If Mark Twain had a microphone and camera, he'd be doing a lot of what John is doing!'

John changed the face of American TV as the Creator, Co-Host, Producer, and principal writer of 'Real People,' the country's first trend-setting reality show!

When John was crafting the number one show in TV for three years, his commitment was always to STORY and PURPOSE!

John's story... and what an amazing real story it is http://johnbarboursworld.com/about.html cannot be done justice in a few words, so go explore it, and know that after John's documentary about John Kennedy's assassination, 'The Garrison Tapes' won the '93 San Sebastian film festival Award, then John decided to retire.

It had taken him over twenty years to tell Jim's story, and even though it was and still is ignored by nearly all media in America, John felt that at least it was finally out there. It was the most important story he could ever tell; and so why try to tell any others.

So, he retired. To play golf. In Las Vegas. And now he shares his incredible story...

John,

I just had a chance to watch our podcast — how terrific! Thank you. It was fun seeing you on the other end of the line as we talked, and I was touched again by your discussing how you identified with my youthful struggles (as I see in your book) and our common interest in what the SUPERMAN TV show I watched in my youth called “Truth, Justice & The American Way” in the murder of JFK. I used to see my father, an honest reporter, as a kind of Clark Kent. I didn’t pick up on your comment that Capra films helped bring you to America. As you know, I was always a great admirer of Capra films, though I was disillusioned by what I learned of the man, and yet I still love his films, especially MR. SMITH, which he tried to disown during the Vietnam War, after informing on its screenwriter, Sidney Buchman, who was a Communist when he wrote it.

We sure covered some lively terrain with Welles and Wilder and other topics on the podcast — including the timely topic of Sirhan. What a tragedy Newsom turned down his parole for political expediency; I was one of those who spoke out on a show with one of his attorneys, Laurie Dusek, and Sirhan's brother Munir. I am glad, though, that the DOJ seems to be moving on some of the midlevel Jan. 6 ringleaders, knock wood. I haven’t had a chance to read that indictment yet. Maybe they could succeed in working upward. But like you, I won’t be satisfied until Trump and his fellow high-level conspirators are indicted. Such investigations often are disappointing, as we know. But we shall see.

Thank you for your probing and fresh questions and your keen interest in my work, the areas we share, and some of my idiosyncratic concerns — I look forward to coming back, as you kindly invited me to do at the end of what Ed Sullivan would call “a rilly big shew.” You’re such an ace interviewer and I hung on your wise words about our past and present political dilemmas.

Cheers to you,

Joe

John,

What a great time this  was!! Shelley and I just sat and watched the whole thing. We laughed with you and

loved your stories and the way you brought in personal experiences of your own. You made it a fabulous

conversation!

What a treat!

And I really want to see the show you did with Ed Asner. Shelley and I were with him just a couple of days

before he passed. What a wonderful friend he was.

And what a wonderful friend you are,.

Thank you, thank you thank you!

Mike

PS Is it OK if I send this to the fellow  in Slovakia who has set up a website on me?

Thank you, John, for exerting such effort, fueled by energy of truth and integrity.

What the "world" is missing is the joy many of us receive from loving humanity and practicing "good human-ing".

Thanks again, John; you are the mensch's mensch!

Mr. Barbour— I send fan mail almost never, but John, your podcast “John Barbour’s World” is superb and I felt compelled to let you know. I discovered you through the Jeff Rense Show. I was a child when Real People was on, but even then, I always looked forward to it. You’re work on the JFK assassination is the best and your efforts in this regard are beyond heroic. I look forward to your book! I wish you could go to once a week on the podcast, but whenever you are on you can be sure that I will be listening. Maxim Love & Respect,  —Kimbo Tippett, Chandler, AZ

MY POST ABOUT ALI WILL STAY UP UNTIL FRIDAY WHEN THIS ONE AND ONLY MAGNIFICENT MAN IS BURIED IN A COUNTRY THAT DID NOT DESREVE HIM..BUT ONE WHICH NEEDED HIM.

HE IS WITHOUT EQUAL IN AMERICA TODAY. THERE IS NOT ONE AMONGST THE RICH AND FAMOUS WITH THE COURAGE TO TALK TRUTH TO OUR GOVERNMENT.. THAT DR. KING SAID WAS THE GREATEST TERRORIST IN THE WORLD.

WHEN THREATENED WITH JAIL AND LOSS OF INCOME, ALI DID NOT JUST TALK TRUTH..HE SHOUTED IT!

IF THERE IS A GOD, HE COULD KICK EVERY SOUL OUT OF HEAVEN..JUST TO MAKE ROOM FOR ALI. BECAUSE WITH ALI..WHEN IT COMES TO SOUL..GOD WOULD HAVE THE COMPANY OF THE GREATEST!!!

John Barbour is probably a nice man, and certainly lives in his own world. But when did he get the skills to actually do a great interview? NEVER?

He ask questions and then talks over the guest while they are trying to answer him. John seems to think that people listen in to his show just to hear his opinions and that may not be true!

In a great interview imo, the host speaks very little. John's intro takes 7 mins., its a good wait to even hear the guest. He doesn't seem to be prepared for the interview, he seems to bring opinion on all points. Sometimes even starts on topics himself that are unrelated to the guests topic, just goes on a personal rant. Isn't that what Facebook is for, John? Express your opinion on Facebook where people may care what your opinion is. I think people want to hear the guest while listening to bbs. Someone said John's interviews are as painful as getting a tooth pulled, but I say you get your gums numbed for that.....Johns interviews are more painful to listen to!
