Guest Biography:

A while back, I hired a consultant to help me brand my business. As a professional composer and performer, I started Mad Island Music in 1979 to publish my original songs. In 1987, my life as a psychic began, which led to publishing books. My psychic work then expanded into Conflict REVOLUTION®, step-by-step instructions for a revolutionary process of finding peace first and foremost within self. This led to coaching and training Con Rev® around the world. Eventually I published two CD of original songs, followed by more books. When I published Guerrilla Publishing, I also started coaching would-be authors to accomplish their dreams of becoming published.2016bwflower

After reviewing my stew, my consultant advised me to pick one thing to concentrate on. But I just couldn’t. How could I choose? It was impossible.

So we created four divisions: music, psychic work, publishing, and teaching and training. Mad Island Communications was born. Our vision statement, teaching & inspiring personal & global transformation encompasses all four divisions, and I feel best represents my personal mission.

Please enjoy exploring my Mad Island. I hope you are inspired into taking action for personal and global transformation. Grateful to be blessed with these gifts, I am delighted to share them with you.

Guest Occupation: Enviromental Activist/Consumer Advocate
Guest Biography:
Erin Brockovich is best known for her involvement in one of the largest direct action lawsuits in U.S. history and is the subject of the 2000 film 'Erin Brockovich.'

Synopsis

Consumer advocate and environmental activist Erin Brockovich was born in Kansas in 1960. While working as a file clerk at a Los Angeles law firm in 1992, Brockovich uncovered documents that ultimately led to more than 600 residents of Hinkley, California, filing a lawsuit against utility giant PG&E. The $333 million settlement they received is the largest of its kind in the history of the United States. The story of Brokovich’s life and involvement in the case was the subject of the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, which starred Julia Roberts in the title role. Since the film’s release, Erin Brockovich has continued to work as a consumer advocate and environmental activist.

Early Life

Consumer advocate and environmental activist Erin Brockovich was born Erin Pattee in Lawrence, Kansas, on June 22, 1960. The youngest of four children, she grew up in a tightknit middle-class family. Her father was an industrial engineer, and her mother was a journalist. Diagnosed as dyslexic at a young age, Erin was not a particularly good student. After graduating high school in 1978, Erin briefly attended Kansas State University before transferring to Miss Wade's Fashion Merchandising College (now Wade College) in Dallas, Texas, where she graduated with an associate’s degree in applied arts in 1980.

After earning her degree, Erin moved with a friend to Newport Beach, California. After working briefly as a management trainee at Kmart, in 1981 she quit and entered and won the Miss Pacific Coast beauty pageant. She also met her first husband, Shawn Brown, around this time, whom she married in April 1982. The young couple moved around the country for the next few years, during which time Erin gave birth to two children, Matthew and Katie. However, their marriage eventually fell apart, and they were divorced in 1987.

Now a single mother, to support her children Erin found work as an assistant at a brokerage firm in Reno, Nevada, where she met Steve Brockovich. They married in 1989 but divorced within a year, at which point Erin learned she was pregnant with her third child, Elizabeth. The events that followed would set Erin Brockovich on the path to her eventual fame.

Hinkley and Hollywood

Shortly after her divorce, Brockovich was involved in a severe car accident that necessitated her having neck surgery. She then moved to Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley, where she was referred by a friend to the law firm Masry & Vititoe, whom she hired to represent her in her accident case. Brokovich was eventually awarded a small settlement, but not enough to support her family with. Feeling sorry for her, in 1992 attorney Ed Masry offered her a clerical job at the firm.

One day, while filing documents for a real estate case involving the utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Brockovich noticed that the paperwork included blood samples. Her suspicions aroused, she asked Masry permission to look into the matter further. In subsequent visits to the California desert town of Hinkley, Brockovich eventually uncovered evidence linking a rash of illnesses there to high levels of hexavalent chromium found in the drinking water. When the pollution was eventually traced back to the PG&E compressor station in Hinkley, more than 600 hundred of the town’s residents hired Masry & Vititoe in 1993 to represent them. After information surfaced during the trial that suggested PG&E had been aware of and tried to cover up the pollution, the case was settled in 1996 for $333 million, the largest in United States history for a case of its kind.

For her part in bringing the case to the firm, Brockovich received a fee of $2.5 million. But the publicity that the case received also brought Brockovich to the attention of Danny DeVito’s production company, Jersey Films, who bought the rights to Brockovich’s story in 1995.

Julia Roberts as Brockovich

Released in 2000, the film Erin Brockovich stars Julia Roberts as Brockovich and Albert Finney as Masry in a mostly accurate recounting of the Hinkley lawsuit. It also features a cameo by Brockovich herself, who appears briefly onscreen as a waitress. The movie was a major critical and commercial success, earning more than $250 million worldwide and receiving multiple Academy Award nominations. For her performance as Brockovich, Julia Roberts won the award for Best Actress.

THE RAY SHASHO SHOW WELCOMES

LEGENDARY DRUMMER & JAZZ-FUSION PIONEER

B I L L Y   C O B H A M

In 1969 Billy Cobham co-founded the fusion group Dreams, which also featured Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, Don Grolnick, Barry Rodgers, and Will Lee. The following year he was invited to join Miles Davis's group and contributed to four pivotal recordings by the trumpeter, including Bitches Brew (where he collaborated with guitarist John McLaughlin) and Tribute to Jack Johnson.

Mahavishnu Orchestra was formed by McLaughlin in 1971 with Cobham, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, and Rick Laird. They released three acclaimed albums (beginning with Inner Mounting Flame) before the band was dissolved and Cobham chose to launch his solo career with Spectrum, one of the definitive albums of the jazz-rock era.

During the 1970s and '80s, he recorded steadily as a leader for Atlantic, CBS, Elektra, and GRP, collaborating with artists ranging from George Duke, John Scofield, and Tony Williams to Jack Bruce and the Grateful Dead, both on stage and in the studio.

Cobham was engaged by UNICEF in 1992 to work with autistic outpatients and street children in Santos (near São Paulo), Brazil, in a musical project of several years' duration. "The street children fell into my realm of operations almost by chance, as it was not part of my original mandate," he says. "But due to the unavoidable specter and shadow cast by so many little personalities with big hearts and so much time to ponder life without parental direction, it was inevitable that I would find myself working with them-some of the brightest minds harboring raw talent that I have ever witnessed to date. The shame of it all was that many would never have the opportunity to use their gift."

In '93 Cobham performed, recorded, and produced at the WOMAD Festival (World of Music, Arts and Dance) with Peter Gabriel, Nigeria's Okuta Percussion, and Farafina from Burkina Faso. (His association with WOMAD continues to this day: over the last several years he's conducted sessions in performance techniques at the University of Bath Spa in England, and he is now an Official Patron of WOMAD in Bath.)

His current collaboration with the Cuban group Asere has been ongoing since their first performance together at the WOMAD Festival in Reading in 2002. A new CD, De Cuba y de Panamá, is due for summer 2008 release, and a DVD, A Latin Soul, directed by John Hollis, is already out. That package contains live concert footage, two documentaries, and a bonus CD with live and studio tracks. Cobham and Asere will be touring the U.K. this fall.

In 2011 Cobham began teaching drums online at The Jazz and Fusion Drum School.

In 2013, Cobham celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of Spectrum CD by touring in USA, Canada and Europe with the Spectrum 40 Band. Also that year, Purple Pyramid Records released the Billy Cobham Compass Point two-CD set, recorded live at Compass Point hotel in the Bahamas in 1997, which was never released before.

Early 2014 marked the release of the much-anticipated "Tales from the Skeleton Coast", which is the third installment of the four recordings produced as a commemoration and celebration of Cobham's mother and father, both of whom were musicians.
In the summer of 2014, Cobham released a live CD recording from the celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre. (Spectrum 40 LIVE)

Drumming legend and jazz fusion pioneer Billy Cobham will bring his highly acclaimed Art of the Rhythm Section Retreat back to the Mesa Arts Center for its second year, offering an immersive educational program for drummers, bassists, guitarists and keyboard players. Geared for advanced students to music educators and working professionals alike, the intensive curriculum is designed to give experienced musicians a range of opportunities to delve into the finer points of working as a cohesive unit in the rhythm section from Billy Cobham, along with Dean Brown (guitar), Ric Fierabracci (bass), Gerry Etkins (keyboards), and global drumming ambassador Dom Famularo.

In the words of program founder Billy Cobham, “The unique format of the program allows participants to explore and expand their artistry, develop and refine their band and focus on the all-important elements of teamwork and collaboration, so that all types of instrumentalists can benefit and learn from the perspective of each one of our coaches.”

Through a variety of learning experiences, including interactive lectures, discussions, demonstrations, playing exercises, and nightly jam sessions, participants will discover how to …

Gain and build trust among fellow Rhythm Section musicians in performance.

Stay in sync with yourself so that you can control what you play through your instrument while receiving information from your colleagues in the Rhythm Section.

Keenly listen in performance, interpret what is offered by your fellow players and offer effective musical ideas in return.

Control tempo and provide a sense of security in performance.

Present a more harmonious musical character through heightened awareness.

Remain in control of syncopated musical ideas within the performance.

The Retreat will also offer a musician enrichment program, “Social Media on Steroids conducted by marketing expert Dan Shinder, to help musicians better leverage social media in promoting their music and their brands.

The Billy Cobham Art of the Rhythm Section Retreat culminates with a special Saturday night performance with Billy and the Spectrum 40 Band at the Mesa Arts Center on Saturday, July 22, 2017 in the Piper Theatre at 7:30 pm  (1 E Main St, Mesa, AZ 85201 near Phoenix, Arizona)

Enrollment for the program is now open, with spaces limited for each of the four Instrument categories of drums, guitar, bass and keyboards.

Guest Occupation: Author, Gnostic Scholar, Philosopher
Guest Biography:

Tim is the standup philosopher – a concept he developed from the ancient idea of a philosopher as a travelling ‘spiritual entertainer’ who transformed people’s consciousness. He is pioneering an accessible new way to experience a profound spiritual awakening, which fully embraces our tender, vulnerable, flawed humanity. He has spent his life exploring the awakened state he often simply calls the ‘mystery experience’ and is able to guide others directly to it.

In his latest book, The Mystery Experience, Tim presents a revolutionary approach to spirituality. He creates a new language of awakening, which makes profound ideas simpler to understand, so it’s easier to experience a real transformation of consciousness. During his Mystery Experience Retreats he personally guides participants directly to the deep awake state.

Tim is a passionate and playful communicator, whose enthusiasm for life is contagious. He is often featured in documentaries and chat shows broadcast by the global media, such as the BBC and the History Channel. Tim blogs for The Huffington Post and care2.com amongst others. He is the founder of The Alliance for Lucid Living, (The ALL), an organization dedicated to our collective awakening. He lives with his wife Debbie and their two children in Glastonbury, England.

I experienced the deep awake state for the first time when I was 12 years old and it was WOW! I was sitting on a hill overlooking my small hometown in the southwest of England contemplating how strange and mysterious life is … when it just happened.

I can vividly recall the feeling of being immersed in overwhelming, exquisite, ecstatic love; as if the whole universe was pulsating with love. I felt I’d been given the most amazing surprise … and yet also as if I’d remembered something I’d always secretly known.

Ever since, I've been exploring how to transform my state of consciousness. I’ve also felt passionate about sharing the WOW of awakening with others, because I soon discovered that when I am deep awake others start waking up around me.

I'm now in my 50s and over the years I've had the privilege of touching the lives of hundreds of thousands of people through my books, broadcasts and events. I feel extremely grateful to have the opportunity to explore the deep awake life with others. Awakening is above all an experience of love and love gets bigger when shared.
