Guest Biography:

Donna is an author and proud pet parent of two Portuguese Water Dogs, Jazz and Jive. These are her current and most passionate roles in life. Dogs have always been a significant influence and source of inspiration for Donna. As many people who have loved a dog will tell you, dogs teach us so much about life. They gift us with their constant, unconditional love and desire to be with us at all times. They give so much and ask for so little in return.

Across many years of the ups and downs of loving and being loved by her dogs, Donna became aware of her knowledge quotient about dog parenting growing from zero to being much more informed. Through personal reflection, she realized that being educated about her dogs' needs caused her to make different (and more informed) decisions about what was best for her dogs. The struggle with her first Portuguese Water Dog, Breezer, and the fulfilling journey to becoming the 'Super Pet Parent' she is today - these are the inspiration and foundation for all of Donna's endeavors, including Heartfelt Communications, The Jazz & Jive Show and now her book, "Being a Super Pet Parent: Everything You Need to Know to Foster a Long, Loving Relationship with Your Dog," a fun-filled, engaging & comprehensive resource for pet parenting.

Donna spent the first half of her professional career in the non-profit sector as an addiction counselor & the second half in the corporate business world where she developed her speaking and training skills. She also spent time as a nurse and flew with a national airline as a flight attendant. Since leaving the business world Donna created, wrote, produced and hosted her own TV show for four years. She is currently redesigning the former TV show in preparation for taking it to the internet as 'The Jazz & Jive Show.'

THE RAY SHASHO SHOW WELCOMES

'FOGHAT' LEGENDARY DRUMMER

ROGER EARL

'FOGHAT' SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM, "UNDER THE INFLUENCE"

Foghat comes full circle with their new album “UNDER THE INFLUENCE", releasing Friday, June 24th. Drawing from their collective musical influences, the band not only brought in some special guests from their past who helped launch and inspire the Foghat story, but also invited some new friends into the mix to continue the journey of this never idle band.

They started recording at their Florida studio, Boogie Motel South in 2013. In addition to Foghat members Roger Earl, Craig MacGregor, Charlie Huhn and Bryan Bassett,  two additional figures helped shape the sessions - Buddy Guy alumni, Scott Holt, who lent a hand in the writing, and added fantastic guitar and vocals to several tracks, and Grammy winning producer/songwriter, Tom Hambridge.

With their resident genius, guitarist Bryan Bassett at the helm, the project was going slow since Bryan was doing triple duty, playing, writing and recording the tracks, while in the midst of a Foghat tour. So Tom Hambridge came aboard. According to Roger Earl "I met Tom when presenting 3 awards to Buddy Guy and Tom (his producer) at the Memphis Blues Awards.  Tom said that he was a fan, and would love to produce a Foghat record. Putting that in the back of my mind, this was the perfect opportunity. Tom came down to Boogie Motel South to meet the band and we clicked and started writing together immediately. Working with him was inspirational!

During this time, an opportunity arose for some ‘other’ recording at Dark Horse Institute in Nashville for a friend's graduation project. Scott, Bryan and Roger recorded 6 tracks and a new ‘band’, ‘Earl and the Agitators’, with Scott Holt as lead guitar/vocals was born.  They are now playing some dates opening for Foghat with Roger and Bryan doing double-duty.  This great experience prompted Foghat to move the recording of “Under the Influence” to Dark Horse Studios where they brought in two of their major influences.

Foghat was ‘spawned’ from the British Blues band ‘Savoy Brown’ in 1971, so it was fitting to ask Savoy founder and guitarist Kim Simmonds to join in.
As Roger Earl puts it “Kim gave me my shot!”  As soon as Kim started playing, everyone was mesmerized!

Included on this release is a new recording of ‘Slow Ride” to celebrate the 40th anniversary. They invited Nick Jameson, (original bass player and producer of ‘Slow Ride’ on the 1975’ Fool for the City’ album) to play along with Foghat bassist Craig MacGregor who played bass on Foghat ‘LIVE’ (1977). They had a blast, and Foghat lead singer, Charlie Huhn, was as usual at the top of his game with his incredible vocals and guitar work!

And to round out the project the amazing Dana Fuchs added some of her bluesy/sultry vocals to a couple of tracks!

Three years in the making, Foghat had fun with this record and the result is an eclectic blend of rock and blues with a little funk and R&B on the side for good measure.
It showcases the combined talent of all of the members both in the writing and the playing. This band never stops!

Guest Biography:

JABU

Jabu is a South African artist who has been exhibited worldwide. Brought up in the Apartheid era, he uses his artwork to express his experiences of what is often an unfriendly world, there by bringing a positive element into it. His artwork is unique with a twist of both urban and contemporary touch. The rich and vibrant colors capture diverse appeal from abstract work to artwork inspired by elements and tapestry from his African background. The choice of timeless materials from mixed media to oil, to maple wood and polished aluminum add to the value of his creations. This has created a growing demand for his signature style and contemporary perspective collection.

Jabu’ calls his work “Transformative Art” because he chooses themes and subject matter that inspire change. His focus is to create beauty and balance while bringing attention to causes he is passionate about.

Here are some of the cause driven series he has created:

Wildlife Series:

Growing up in South Africa, Jabu loved the wildlife and nature reserves. He enjoyed seeing the animals roam free while his own freedom was limited. Over the years, Jabu became

aware that the freedom of the animals around the world was threatened. Recently, the need to protect the wildlife of our planet has become desperate. He chose to create the “Wildlife Series” because of his passion to save endangered animals. The last great animals of our earth are threatened due to human destruction of their habitats, pollution, fishing and hunting. His work captures the wonder and majesty of wildlife and their habitat. It is his hope that people will have a real call to action to do something today by supporting his work in turn supporting Non-profits who are fighting for this cause.

About the Nelson Mandela Freedom Series:

“I Started this series as my contribution to the Nelson Mandela Legacy. The legacy of Nelson Mandela motivates the human spirit. His message was and still is a global one. He had a profound effect on me growing up as a young man in South Africa. His selfless great spirit motivated me and my fellow comrades to join him for a fight to liberation against apartheid. His courage and bravery helped light the fire in me to fight for global freedom and peace.”

“I had the honor of meeting Mandela for the first time in South Africa after his release from prison and again in Washington DC at an event he was attending arranged by Jessy Jackson. I was there, doing the groundwork for the African National Congress Youth League. Before the triumph of Mandela’s organization there was fear of civil war in South Africa. The world watched this process unfold and there were rumors in the media that retribution would be sought and that mass acts of violence were eminent. What they didn’t count on is people like myself working around the clock to prepare for the “changing of the guard”. I was in DC on a program to study Peace and Conflict Resolution at American University to help with the peaceful transaction, from Apartheid to the new dispensation. My commander has left us and the world an amazing legacy of dignity, humanity, equality and most of all freedom. I am honored to create works of art to continue to preserve Mandela’s legacy.”

About the Transformative Food Series:

“Transformative Foods is based on my roots. Eating home cooked meals was a tradition. Moreover, home grown food was also common practice. As a child I think I was 9 or 10 I did a lot of jobs in the farms during school break. Living in the US Jabu discovered that Americans don’t often grow their own food. Food is mass produced, genetically modified, laden with pesticides and imported from around the world. The need for sustainability and eating food that’s organic is imperative.”

“I prepare my meals with fresh locally grown crop and home raised live stock mostly from farmer’s market, some in my own backyard. The dishes I prepare I use different colors of vegetables, this inspires my creativity. This series allows me to combine two of my passions, cooking and painting. Most importantly, I love to break bread with friends and family to foster great community.”

About the Abstract Series:

Jabu’s abstract work is about happiness. By creating and sharing his art, Jabu creates an emotional outlet for himself and others to help heal from life’s challenges. His unique approach and technique create a soothing atmosphere and captures the essence of, love, nature, life…with vibrant colors, intense forms and dramatic geometric shapes. This visual experience gives you an insight into his world.

Here is quote about Jabu’s work from: ArtisSpectrum Magazine
“Your work: Nuanced by color, variable degrees on depth perception, fluid color, and textures of abstract space, all of the paintings exhibit strength in the use of color and technique to express mood, emotion and milieu. With paint as the purveyor of vision, all of the paintings achieve poignancy through a unique perspective that is evident throughout the body of work. Resolute in style and perspective, I feel that the work will resonate well in New York and with our international audience”.

On August 1st, 2015 I was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in the late stages. I tried every healing modality presented to me. It seemed I was making great strides and getting better, but I found out earlier this week that the cancer has spread to both lungs, the trachea, liver and lymph nodes.  Seen as "incurable" by hospitals, I moved  to Placerville, California, to regroup and heal.  I’ve chosen to live with a dear friend, Lance White, at the “Zany Mystic Ranch and Healing Center”, which resides in a High Vibrational Energy Vortex made famous by the healer, The Goat Doctor of the Sierras”, written by Gloria Hockensmith.

Guest Occupation: Executive Director, Adventures in Caring (Compassion Organization)
Guest Biography:

Simon Fox, Executive Director of the Adventures in Caring Foundation,(AiC), is pioneering the education of the heart. He is also co-Author of What Can I Say? A Guide to Visiting Friends and Family Who Are Ill and co-producer of five video-based training programs on  compassion, including The Medicine of Compassion and Oxygen for Caregivers.  For 30 years AiC has taught the art and practice of compassion—as a skill that restores well-being and promotes healing. Their work is now recognized globally.

Adventures in Caring is based in Santa Barbara and despite its small size it is having a big impact. Founded by Simon’s wife, Karen Fox, in 1984, the nonprofit is most famous for its Raggedy Ann and Andy  volunteers who visit local nursing homes and hospitals to lift the spirits of patients who are lonely. What is less well known is who is under those wigs, what they discovered, and how far their influence has spread.

Many people still think that compassion cannot be taught—considering it a personality trait that’s either there or not. Others think of compassion as a philosophy or a feeling. Under Karen and Simon’s tutelage Adventures in Caring has taken it a step further: compassion as a verb—the practical skill of getting it across to a person who is sick or injured so that they realize that you care and they no longer feel alone. Fox says “That’s when the magic happens—when the other person gets it. That’s when you see their body language change, their vital signs improve, and their outlook become more hopeful.” He says this is the secret of all great nurses, physicians, and health care practitioners—they know the language of healing that lifts the spirits, dispels loneliness, and inspires the will to heal.

Under the leadership of Simon Fox, this is what the Adventures in Caring team has decoded and now teaches to undergraduate students from the University of California–Santa Barbara who are studying to become doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. They learn this art through a one-year service-learning internship. After in-depth training they visit the residents in a nursing home or the patients on a hospital unit on a weekly basis for a school year, practicing the art of listening carefully, taking an interest in lives, not just bodies, and building the emotional maturity to create meaningful connections with those who are suffering. By reflecting in writing on what happened in each interaction, and being coached year-round, the students develop skills that last a lifetime.

Simon and the AiC team have shared their discovery far and wide,  with volunteers and health professionals. David Chernof, MD, former AiC board president and professor at the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine said, “This is a remarkable program, I highly recommend it.” General Colin Powell took notice: “I applaud your efforts to teach volunteers how to interact with people who are suffering… I am sharing your work with my staff.”

More than one thousand hospitals, one thousand hospices, two thousand churches, and several hundred nursing schools have used AiC programs. Santa Barbara City College School of Nursing has integrated the entire AiC Cultivating Compassion series into its new Memory Caregiver program that teaches nursing assistants how to built better relationships with patients who have dementia. Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care of Santa Barbara has trained its own team of mentors to teach the Cultivating Compassion program throughout the entire agency, to equip its staff with the most advanced skills for communicating compassion to the sick and dying. Even the American Trauma Society in Washington DC used AiC expertise—to help teach trauma surgeons how to better communicate with the families of trauma victims in those crucial moments when they must deliver news right after surgery.

In addition to teaching healthcare providers to be more compassionate, under Simon’s direction, Adventures in Caring created the Oxygen for Caregivers program to protect the health and emotional well-being of health care professionals.  According to Simon, deteriorating health of the people who work in health care is a growing problem throughout the world—they are in poorer health than most other occupations. He shares one of the more startling facts, nursing assistants are more likely to be injured on the job than construction workers. Nurses are more likely to experience on-the-job violence than all other professions. Doctors too are affected: more than one in three physicians may be clinically depressed, and surgeons think of suicide as much as three times more often than the general population. Many trauma workers and social workers are physically assaulted at work, and those who work in palliative care have higher stress scores than patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

Oxygen for Caregivers: Guarding Against Burnout, Sustaining Compassion, has been adopted by the international group of nurse educators, ELNEC (End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium) who deliver programs in 80 countries. The AiC Oxygen for Caregivers is now a key part of the ELNEC train-the-trainer summits and so far has been presented in the U.S., China, Kenya, and Romania. “These resources are beautifully created to remind us of the importance of self-care” said Pam Malloy, ELNEC Director.

From hospice care to trauma care, this ripple of compassion that began in Santa Barbara is spreading throughout the world. Glen Holden Jr., current AiC board president, added, “If you have ever wondered if love really has the power to heal, you might want to take a look at the AdventuresInCaring.org website. No matter what kind of help you give to someone in need, when you also make a heartfelt connection, the difference you make in their life is so much more powerful and lasting. That’s why it is essential to teach compassion.”
