Michael McFaul is Director at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, the Ken Olivier and Angela Nomellini Professor of International Studies in the Department of Political Science, and the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. He joined the Stanford faculty in 1995. Dr. McFaul also is as an International Affairs Analyst for NBC News and a columnist for The Washington Post. He served for five years in the Obama administration, first as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Russian and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council at the White House (2009-2012), and then as U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2012-2014).

He has authored several books, most recently the New York Times bestseller From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin’s Russia. Earlier books include Advancing Democracy Abroad: Why We Should, How We Can; Transitions To Democracy: A Comparative Perspective (eds. with Kathryn Stoner); Power and Purpose: American Policy toward Russia after the Cold War (with James Goldgeier); and Russia’s Unfinished Revolution: Political Change from Gorbachev to Putin. He is currently writing a book called Autocrats versus Democrats: Lessons from the Cold War for Competing with China and Russia Today.

He teaches courses on great power relations, democratization, comparative foreign policy decision-making, and revolutions.

Dr. McFaul was born and raised in Montana. He received his B.A. in International Relations and Slavic Languages and his M.A. in Soviet and East European Studies from Stanford University in 1986. As a Rhodes Scholar, he completed his D. Phil. In International Relations at Oxford University in 1991. His DPhil thesis was Southern African Liberation and Great Power Intervention: Towards a Theory of Revolution in an International Context.

In her book "Your Suicide Didn’t Kill Me; Choosing to Live and Love Again After Loss" she offers hope and understanding to fellow survivors. Cathie bravely recounts her raw and healing journey through grief and choosing to love again. The thoughts, lessons, and stories she tells could come only from someone with firsthand experience. 

With a diploma in Social Work and over twenty five years of experience working with youth, including those who were suicidal, Cathie never believed that her husband of fifteen years would take his own life. In her book, she shares her experiences with candor and an open heart, intending to help others move through their own grief and healing process. 

Cathie is a Certified Grief Educator, a Certified Teaching Parent (TFA), a graduate of Leadership Calgary, a trainer and corporate coach. She considers herself a life-long learner and has taken personal development courses since 1984 when she flew to San Diego to study with Jack Canfield. Her studies have also included energetic healing techniques.

State Representative Gene Wu proudly serves the people of District 137 in the Texas House. Prior to being elected in 2012, he served as a prosecutor in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, where he sought justice for thousands of crime victims. Gene is currently an attorney in private practice.

Since being elected State Representative, Gene has maintained a focus on improving the lives of Texas children. Gene has authored numerous pieces of legislation supporting greater justice for juveniles; specifically fighting the school to prison pipeline and passing comprehensive CPS reform. Gene has also been appointed to the Texas Access to Justice Commission, and the Texas State Child Fatality Review Team.

Now in his 6th term, Gene has been appointed to serve on the Appropriations Committee, and sits on the subcommittee on Article II which is responsible for the funding of health and human services programs. Gene also serves on the Juvenile Justice and Family Issues Committee bringing his expert knowledge and professional experience to help represent kids and families across Texas. 

Outside his legislative work, Gene remains active and involved in the Houston community. Gene currently serves on community advocacy organization boards such as the OCA-Greater Houston Advisory Board, the Chinese Community Center Advisory Board, and the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Centers Advisory Committee. As an attorney, Gene serves as a Guardian Ad-Litem representing minors in court in either criminal or CPS cases. Additionally, Gene is passionate in supporting young people becoming active in civic roles, and is proud advocate for the AAPI community across Texas and the nation.

GEORGE KARPASITIS

George Karpasitis’ language is music. He is a Los Angeles based music composer, producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, best known for his lyrical guitar style. He has performed and recorded internationally, in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, such as Abbey Road Studios in London, UK.

He was born and raised on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, where from a young age he was exposed to the local sounds of Greek and Middle Eastern music, as well as The Beatles and Louis Armstrong, through his dad’s audio cassette collection. His relentless love for music led him to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Guitar Performance from the London Centre of Contemporary Music, and a Master’s Degree in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music.

As of 2023, George has released two albums of original compositions for solo classical guitar (‘Sounds of Mar Vista’, 2019 and ‘Breakwater’ 2020), and has worked in the music department for more than 20 films, including titles by Disney and Discovery Plus. His debut single as a singer-songwriter, titled ‘Speaking of Love’, was released in 2021. He has also recorded and produced artists such as ceremonial songstress Winter Jendayi (‘Hilos Sagrados’, 2022), world music duo Corasonho (‘Ebo’, 2022) and singer-songwriter Wesley Sol (‘Om Shreem/Nas Aguas’, 2022).

He is currently creating the sound and music of ‘Palmares’, a historically based Capoeira action musical that will be performed as part of the Hollywood Fringe festival throughout June 2023. He is also producing the upcoming debut EP by the Golden Sisters collective, who bridge culture, tradition and language through their songs. His next personal release, titled ‘Sounds of Rajasthan’ will be a collection of mantras he learned during his recent travels to India.

DAVID NEPTUNE

David is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, musician and instrument producer based in Los Angeles. 

Born and raised in Japan, David was influenced from a young age by his father John Kaizan Neptune who is a renowned shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) player. 

Inspired by the deep nature of Japan and his father’s music, David takes a heart-centered, joyful approach to music and improvised collaboration. He is currently producing the ‘Takeda,” an entirely new bamboo drum invented by his father. 

David’s documentary work as a story producer includes “Street Food” on Netflix, “Marvel’s 616” on Disney+, and a current Hulu original series, “Mastermind” set to release in 2024. 

His debut feature film, “Words Can’t Go There” released in 2019, is a personal look at his father’s life and the dynamics between passion and family. 

David focuses on the same intention with his music and films – to inspire people to open their hearts and let their inner sun shine through.
