Bird flu strain found on B.C. farm

10:34 AM PST on Sunday, November 20, 2005

By CHRIS DANIELS / KING 5 News

As many as 65,000 birds at a poultry farm in Canada’s Fraser River Valley will be slaughtered after a strain of bird flu was discovered in a duck on there.

Health officials are trying to determine if the duck, slaughtered on a farm in the town of Chilliwack, 15 miles north of the U.S. border, had the same strain of Avian flu that has killed 60 people in Asia.

Preliminary tests indicate the strain was a mild version of the bird flu virus and not a threat to human health. There are no signs the disease has spread to other birds.

The ducks and meat from this particular farm are not sold in the Washington state or anywhere in the U.S.

As many as 65,000 birds will be slaughtered at a farm in Chilliwack, B.C. after a strain of bird flu was discovered in a duck there.

Canadian health investigators are, nevertheless, taking blood samples from birds on other farms the Fraser River Valley and several other farms are in a state of \"bio-security\" lockdown.

\"It just could be [a deadly bird flu strain], so we as an industry have committed to being proactive with these things,\" said poultry farm owner Ken Faulk.

Provincial leaders say they aren\'t sure which strain of the H5 virus was in the duck, which was in good condition at slaughter.

The problems were noticed when the duck was de-feathered for slaughter, and preliminary tests showed the presence of the the virus.
