\"19-year-old Boyan Slat has unveiled plans to create an Ocean Cleanup Array that could remove 7,250,000 tons of plastic waste from the world’s oceans. The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world. Instead of moving through the ocean, the array would span the radius of a garbage patch, acting as a giant funnel. The angle of the booms would force plastic in the direction of the platforms, where it would be separated from plankton, filtered and stored for recycling.\"

Five years to clean up the oceans, huh? Oh, to be brilliant, young, and idealistic- [ OLD LINK REMOVED ] It IS a good start on the solution to this problem, much better than bacteria that eats the plastic. If interested, see 19 yr. old Daniel Burd\'s project @ [ OLD LINK REMOVED ]

.

Given the strength of ocean currents in storms, not sure the \'booms\' would last very long. Maybe the gyre\'s are not so tossed about which is why the plastic stays in the gyre to begin with. I can\'t see it helping Fukushima debris problem, much, until it comes to rest in a million trillion billion pieces in the Pacific \'garbage patch\' in the next 10 years. We need something now to mechanically filter this crud out of the water, radioactive or not.
