FINDING YOUR SOUL OF UNCERTAINTY
Sometimes we work diligently at a project, at times feeling frustrated, at other times feeling exhilarated. When it's completed you feel really good. That's how I feel right now-my new book, The Soul of Uncertainty, a Fable for our Times, has arrived and is available today!
When I think about what I just said, does uncertainty ever arrive? Isn't it here all the time? Does it ever go away? Nevertheless, how we relate to it determines our experience of life, and determines whether we are smiling or walking around with apprehension.
It is true that life disappoints us at times-expectations dashed, assumptions working out differently than we had anticipated and people letting us down. And when you add to the mix those major events that are out of our control, we might be close to meltdown.
But we still have a choice as to how we handle those upsets or dashed expectations. I have been hosting The Inspire Possibility Radio Show for over a year now and every once in a while my guest doesn't call in, or calls in late. Feeling a little bit frustrated, I begin the show without them, initially talking about their work and their book, until I shift the conversation to my own work. It was at one of those transition points when a flash of insight came to me:
What emerged was the essence of how we can find The Soul of Uncertainty within ourselves...of course I want you to read the book to get all of it. But I want you also to really examine the word SOUL by looking at what the letters in the word SOUL symbolize.
The S represents beginning your day with stillness- taking time for silence and silent contemplation. It can also represent spirit, closely connected to stillness. It's amazing how this practice, and I say practice because it is a never-ending process, connects us to a deep sense of peace and feeling of freedom. Beginning the day feeling centered is your personal shock absorber that buffers you from the day's events.
The O represents openness and vulnerability. Being open to new ideas and new relationships. Being open to the possibility that some of your assumptions have become outdated. Being open to the possibility that things are going to turn out better than you had anticipated. And this is the big one, a really big one, being open to the possibility that your life can really be great.
The U-reminds you to remain unattached. When you become attached to the way you want things to be, to your expectations, you'll easily be disappointed when there is a different outcome.
It doesn't mean that you won't have personal goals, or that you won't still have dreams or visions. Having them is important for our well-being because the process of going for them, (even if you don't achieve them) leads to an aliveness and feeling of engagement that makes life more meaningful and fulfilling.
The practice is remaining unattached to the eventual outcome and flowing with what is.
We come to the L which signifies Love-let it in, be it, become it. What comes with love is respect, acceptance, joy, inner peace, acknowledging others and having faith in the goodness of others. Perhaps most important about love, and I know you have heard me say this before, is loving yourself.
So there you have it. Had my scheduled guest called in as planned, it's unlikely that this wisdom, distilled here in this manner, would have come to me. I say come to me, because it has always been there, but at that moment I became a channel for receiving it.
